Chapter 231 Searching
Lu Fangtong politely greeted Peng Yuxian before leading them into the police station.
The officer in charge of receiving them was Inspector Huang from the Criminal Investigation Department. He led them to the police station's archives and asked Officer Ma, who was in charge of managing the files, to bring out all the materials they had found the day before.
Officer Ma was a young man newly recruited to the police station. He didn't recognize the people in front of him, only knowing that he had received a phone call from above yesterday, instructing them to search for these people. The station temporarily transferred manpower, and they worked all night to finally complete the task.
"Is everything here?" Inspector Huang glanced at the files on the table.
Officer Ma nodded repeatedly in agreement, "They're all here. These are the files on recent housing occupancy changes on Tuanyuan Road in Xingren Town, transferred from the Civil Affairs Bureau. We've already removed residences without children from the list."
After saying that, he pointed to another set of files, "These are the records of all the children who drowned in Almond Town in recent years. Some of the records that were sent from Almond Town this morning are also in here. The files that meet both the conditions of address and child drowning are here."
Police Inspector Huang nodded and looked at Lu Fangtong, saying, "Director Lu, all the information is here. Who are you looking for?"
Lu Fangtong glanced at the file on the table. "Thank you, Inspector Huang. We can find it ourselves from now on."
Inspector Huang smiled and said, "Alright, if you need anything else, just ask Xiao Ma to get it for you." Then he turned to Officer Ma and said, "Xiao Ma, these people are in your care. Try your best to meet their needs, understand?"
"Yes, Inspector Huang!"
In fact, the police had already categorized the files in great detail. Geng Miaowan opened the file that met both conditions. The three of them sat down and began to study it.
Xinglin Town is not large, and there are no major rivers nearby, so in the past fifteen years, only three families have met both of these conditions: one boy and two girls.
The girl was immediately ruled out, and all three of them turned their attention to the boy's file. The boy's name was Lin Tian, he was ten years old, and his original address was No. 57 Tuanyuan Road.
Geng Miaowan put down the file with some disappointment.
"How is it?" Lu Fangtong asked with concern.
“No.” Geng Miaowan sighed. “According to what Shuai Shuai said, Xiao Ming should be a three or four-year-old boy.”
Lu Fangtong's expression stiffened for a moment, then he turned to Officer Ma and asked, "Is all the files from your department here?"
His aura made it seem as if he were the boss in this situation.
Officer Ma knew that the person in front of him, whom even Inspector Huang treated with respect, was someone he couldn't afford to offend, so he quickly and sincerely replied, "Yes, they're all here."
Geng Miaowan stood up to take a look at another file, but her arm accidentally bumped into the file next to her.
With a "whoosh," the file fell to the ground, scattering its contents.
"Excuse me," she said, quickly squatting down to pick up the files scattered on the ground. Officer Ma saw this and rushed over to pick them up himself. "Let me do it."
Geng Miaowan picked up a piece of paper. It had a picture of a boy, about three or four years old, with a chubby face and very cute features. Below it looked like basic information.
"what is this?"
“These are the records of children who have gone missing in Almond Town over the past few years,” Officer Ma replied.
Geng Miaowan nodded, glanced casually at the contents of the paper, and handed it back to Officer Ma.
The three of them went through all the information but couldn't find a child who met the criteria. In the end, they had to leave disappointed, and another day had passed.
The next day, they visited every household along Tuanyuan Road, asking if anyone knew even the slightest bit about it. However, the answer was always no; everyone said they had never heard of a three- or four-year-old child drowning.
Another day has passed.
Lu Shuaishuai could no longer even sit up; his face was terribly pale. Luan Hao said that his body could no longer generate human energy, so even if Xiao Ming wasn't by his side, he would only get worse.
Upon hearing this, Geng Miaowan felt a burning anxiety in her heart.
After nightfall, Geng Miaowan opened the door to Lu Fangtong's courtyard house alone and carefully stepped inside.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Luan Hao asked her.
"Besides this, do you have any other ideas?" They had tried every possible method these past few days, even asking around among people who used to live here but had moved away a long time ago, but no one knew anything.
Aside from asking the person involved, she really couldn't think of any other way to do it.
However, she also knew in her heart that even if she asked Xiaoming herself, she might not get an answer, because she had previously asked Lu Shuaishuai to ask Xiaoming about his own background, and the answers she received were all vague.
It seems he himself doesn't really understand those things.
Seeing her insistence, Luan Hao said, "You can ask all you want, but remember this: even if the other person is a child, if you accidentally trigger their resentment, it's not something you can handle right now."
"Alright, alright, I know. Stop nagging like an old man," he had said this countless times. She turned around, closed the door, and slowly walked inside. "Keep an eye on him for me. If he shows up, let me know."
Luan Hao couldn't really see inside her body; he could only feel it.
As Geng Miaowan spoke, she was passing through the courtyard, intending to enter. At that moment, Luan Hao suddenly spoke, "He's here."
"where is it?"
"Right in front of you."
……
She stopped her raised foot, unsure whether she should step over it. Although ghosts are invisible and stepping over them wouldn't harm him, she simply couldn't bring herself to do something like knowing he was in front of her and then running into something in front of her.
After thinking for a moment, Geng Miaowan stopped in her tracks. "What is he doing?"
"Looking at you."
"..."
A gust of wind blew by, raising goosebumps all over her hands.
Geng Miaowan touched her arm and softly called out to the air in front of her, "Xiaoming, Xiaoming, are you here?"
"He seems to have something to say."
"What?"
"how could I know."
"..."
"He seemed a bit agitated."
"what happened?"
"how could I know."
"..."
Geng Miaowan wanted nothing more than to slap Luan Hao. She felt she was being too passive. "Is there any way you can let me see him?"
Luan Hao countered, "Are you sure you want to see?"
"Nonsense." (To be continued.)
