Infinite: Dawn Game
Chapter 27 Deception (Not really)
"Don't rush me," Yu Shijiu rubbed her eyes and walked towards the door, her eyes still a little sleepy.
"If you keep urging me, I won't go."
Xiao Li: [...Who gets the points after the mission is completed?]
Why is this conversation acting like it requires points?
Yu Shijiu gripped the doorknob and twisted it slightly, indicating his reaction:
"If you hadn't said no, I wouldn't have wanted to do any side quests."
He had a lot of work but few points. Well, his points were alright, but he really didn't have any ideas at all.
The beds in the sanatorium were much more comfortable than the ones he lived in in real life, and he slept quite soundly.
After opening the door, Yu Shijiu stretched and walked towards the ward diagonally opposite under Xiao Li's gaze.
Xiao Li was visibly startled: "You're going to the nurses' station on the fourth floor—"
"Don't shout," Yu Shijiu blinked, and the motion-sensor lights in the corridor turned on, stark white.
"I've done the task I was asked to do, so don't try to interrupt and give orders."
Xiao Li: [...]
"Boom-thump-thump-"
Yu Shijiu knocked slowly, and the motion-sensor light above his head was startled back on by the knocking just as it went dark.
Players in front of the screen were terrified, staring at the flickering lights in the corner of the screen, feeling that something strange might appear on the nearby stairs, elevator, or even the nurses' station.
"Is he really not afraid of being discovered?"
"I don't really understand knocking either, am I really stupid?"
"I feel like it; this is something no normal person could do."
“…I said,” one player hesitated, staring at the curve of Yu Shijiu’s lips on the screen:
"Is it possible that he's deliberately luring the monster out to find him?"
Upon hearing this, the surrounding chatter instantly ceased, and everyone stared at Yu Shijiu, who was slowly knocking on the door on the screen, a chill running down their spines.
"No way... is he really that crazy?"
Yu Shijiu seems pretty normal.
Yu Shijiu, who was inside the game instance, had no idea what the players outside were discussing. He looked at the ward door in front of him and knocked on it again.
This time, the doorway was no longer quiet; the rustling sound of slippers walking could be heard.
With a creak.
The door to the ward opened.
Behind the door, Xuexue cautiously peeked out, her head halfway up. She was startled when she saw it was Yu Shijiu, and then quickly opened the door and pulled Yu Shijiu inside.
Xuexue's hands were very cold, not just from being frozen, but the kind of coldness that, if touched for a while, felt as if the coldness was trying to seep into her flesh and blood, gradually approaching her heart.
This kind of coldness usually only occurs when a person dies.
Yu Shijiu's fingers curled slightly from the cold, but he made no attempt to break free.
Xuexue's ward was noticeably colder than his own.
After entering the ward, Xuexue let go of Yu Shijiu's hand, carefully closed the door, and then slowly breathed a sigh of relief.
"That scared me to death," Xuexue pouted and turned around. This time, she didn't hug the teddy bear; instead, she crossed her arms over her chest.
"We can't go out and run around at night, or Mom, no, the nurses will get angry if they see us."
Yu Shijiu's gaze lingered on Xue Xue's pale, bloodless face, seemingly oblivious to the twist in Xue Xue's words, as if he were stunned by what she said:
"what?"
"Why? I thought everyone was asleep last night, so I came here specifically to play with you."
As she spoke, Yu Shijiu pulled a bag from her pocket and said with a smile:
"Look, I even brought you some delicious food."
He opened his hand; it was a bag of plain bread he had bought at the "Chrysanthemum Shop" self-service store.
Xiao Li: [...]
Players silently watching the game instance on their screens: "..."
Seriously, can't you use something valuable to trick a monster? Couldn't you at least offer a lollipop?! This is insulting to a monster's intelligence!
Numerous players complained.
However, this was really unfair to Yu Shijiu. He wasn't stingy; he just genuinely hadn't bought anything. All he had on hand were bread and compressed biscuits... The former could barely be described as having a light, soft, original wood-based flavor, while the latter was truly tasteless, the kind that would sting your throat if swallowed dry with water.
Yu Shijiu, who was being teased for being stingy, couldn't help but sneeze. He wrinkled his nose and blamed it on the fact that Xuexue's hospital room was too cold.
"How about it? Want to try some?"
Yu Shijiu walked over to Xuexue, squatted down, tilted his head, and handed her the bag of bread.
To the surprise of all the players, Xuexue had never actually eaten bread.
On the screen, the pale-faced little girl hesitated, then shook her head and honestly said:
"Mom won't let me eat these,"
Xuexue: "She said I need to eat properly and not eat snacks so that I can get better faster."
"No way," Yu Shijiu said, shocked. He tore off a corner of the bread and tilted his head.
"This is very nutritious and smells delicious," the boy said with a smile, licking his lips.
"I used to want to eat it but couldn't."
So even though the bread didn't taste good, Yu Shijiu was still willing to finish it.
In the mental hospital, due to the long-term injection of various nerve-stimulating drugs, Yu Shijiu was unable to eat any food when the side effects kicked in. The doctors and nurses dared not let him die, so they could only inject him with glucose and other liquids to keep him alive.
So much so that when he later had the strength to escape and kill, the doctors and nurses couldn't even imagine it.
Tsk.
Thinking of this, Yu Shijiu suddenly regretted not burning down the mental hospital where he was being held before he left.
If they burned it down and then locked the gate, at least a few of the doctors and nurses would probably die.
As for the other patients... Yu Shijiu believed that they probably wouldn't want to live such a crazy and muddled life.
None of the players in front of the screen knew whether what he said was true or not, but most people were more inclined to believe it was false.
How could someone not be able to afford bread in real life? This simply packaged bread is arguably the cheapest thing available; even if you were to collect garbage, you could easily afford it.
After all, real-world currency is different from points.
Even though Xuexue herself might be a monster, she was still tempted.
Xuexue licked her lips, looked at the bread that Yu Shijiu had opened, and asked:
"is that true?"
“Yes,” Yu Shijiu said with absolute certainty, not feeling like she was lying at all.
"It smells and tastes sweet, so it must be very nutritious."
It must be much more nutritious than the glucose dripped into his body.
Xuexue believed it.
She hesitantly took the bread, timidly looked up at Yu Shijiu, and took a bite under the latter's "encouraging" gaze.
Plain bread doesn't actually have much sweetness, but you can taste a slight sweetness as you chew and the aroma of the flour comes out.
Xuexue was enjoying her meal so much that when she was halfway through, the cute and delicate-looking little girl opened her mouth wide and bit into the bread with all her teeth at the same time, the players watching on the screen were instantly shocked!
