From cannon fodder villain to beloved heroine

Chapter 12 The Truth Revealed, Crisis Turned Around

Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe stood side by side, bathed in the cool, silvery moonlight.

By the dim candlelight, the two carefully studied the yellowed dossier in their hands.

The densely packed handwriting on the file, like a spider web, revealed a shocking secret.

When their eyes simultaneously locked onto a name, the air seemed to freeze.

"How could it be him?" Yan Rugo's voice trembled with disbelief, her bright eyes wide open as if she had seen something incredible.

Xu Xinghe also frowned, and a look of shock appeared on his usually gentle and refined face.

He slowly put down the file in his hand, clasped his hands together, and rested them on his chin, as if he were thinking about something. "There is probably a bigger conspiracy behind this."

They exchanged a glance, both seeing seriousness in each other's eyes.

The seriousness of this matter has exceeded their imagination.

What was initially thought to be a simple case of servants causing trouble turned out to involve high-ranking officials in the household.

They took a deep breath; a faint sense of oppression filled the air, as if a storm was about to break.

The two instantly entered battle mode, exuding an aura that was not to be trifled with.

Just then, a burst of hurried footsteps came closer and closer.

Before they could react, several menacing-looking servants rushed in front of them.

They all looked fierce and menacing, their eyes as greedy as hungry wolves, as if they wanted to devour them alive.

The leader, with a hideous scar across his face, exuded a menacing aura.

"I am acting under orders. Please cooperate!" He uttered these words coldly, his tone carrying an undeniable threat.

"Tsk, this display is quite impressive." Yan Rugo's lips curled into a cold smile, a hint of disdain flashing in her eyes.

She stood tall and proud, like an unyielding weed, never bending over no matter the wind or rain.

Xu Xinghe smiled slightly, a barely perceptible glint of sharpness flashing in his eyes. He gently shielded Yan Rugo behind him and said softly, "This setup is quite interesting."

They both clenched their fists simultaneously, leaning forward slightly, like a cheetah poised to pounce, ready to deliver a fatal blow to their enemy at any moment.

Yan Rugo felt the warmth emanating from Xu Xinghe, and the corners of her mouth turned up slightly. She knew that this man would always be trustworthy.

"Trying to stop us? You're probably still dreaming." Yan Rugo's tone was contemptuous.

"Hmph, let's see." The scarred man sneered and charged forward first.

They exchanged a smile, but the next second, they made a completely unexpected move—"Let's go!"

Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe vanished from their spot in an instant, like two ghosts.

The scarred man missed his target and nearly fell to the ground. He roared and led his men in hot pursuit.

However, Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe are no longer the weaklings they once were, at the mercy of others.

They moved nimbly through the intricate mansion like cunning foxes.

For them, scaling walls and leaping across rooftops was a piece of cake.

With a nimble flip, they dodged the servants' fierce attack, and also managed to steal one or two tokens from them.

"Oh, this token is of good quality, but it's a bit dirty." Yan Rugo commented as she casually tossed the token to Xu Xinghe. The two worked together seamlessly, understanding each other with just a glance.

"Same here, your badge is practically covered in mushrooms." Xu Xinghe replied with a smile, his tone teasing, as if they weren't on the run, but playing a thrilling game of hide-and-seek.

The servants were completely outmaneuvered, panting and in a sorry state, running around like headless flies.

They tried their best, but couldn't even touch the hem of the two people's clothes. They could only watch helplessly as they slipped away, feeling utterly defeated.

"Are these two reincarnated loaches? How can they be so slippery!" The scarred man stomped his feet in anger, making the scar on his face look even more ferocious.

Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe moved nimbly through the flowers, their movements as light as swallows, dodging wave after wave of pursuers.

They would sometimes lurk behind the artificial hill, and sometimes hide in the shadows of the trees, making the servants run around in circles.

Suddenly, Yan Rugo stopped and looked back at Xu Xinghe. Xu Xinghe looked back at her, his eyes filled with warmth like the spring sun, enough to melt away all ice and snow.

Their eyes met in mid-air, as if an electric current was pulsating between them, and the surrounding air became sweet.

"Thank goodness I have you," Yan Rugo said softly, her voice tinged with dependence.

"Me too," Xu Xinghe replied gently, a faint smile playing on his lips.

They held each other's hands tightly, feeling each other's warmth, and their breathing became rapid.

The surrounding scenery seemed to lose its color; only the two of them, at this moment, became the only thing in each other's eyes.

The air was filled with a deep sense of love, as if it could melt the whole world.

Suddenly, they saw Madam Li leading a group of people around the corner ahead, her expression shifting between light and dark. They were startled.

"We have to go," Xu Xinghe said in a low voice.

"Mm!" Yan Rugo nodded, took Xu Xinghe's hand, and disappeared into the night again. The air behind them only echoed with one sentence: "The show has only just begun."

When Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe reappeared, they were already standing in front of Madam Li.

They clutched the dossier tightly in their hands, a document powerful enough to overturn everything, their eyes gleaming with an undeniable light.

“Madam,” Yan Rugo spoke first, her voice clear and cold, yet carrying an undeniable power, “we have something important to report.”

Madam Li sat upright in the high hall, her sharp gaze sweeping over the two men.

However, before she could ask a question, a sharp voice broke the silence, "Madam, please be wise! These two must have ill intentions! They have trespassed into the important grounds of the mansion, and they must be coveting the power of the mansion!" The speaker was a high-ranking official in the mansion, and at this moment, his face was full of anger, as if he had suffered a great injustice.

He made vehement accusations, portraying himself as a victim, his skill in distorting the truth was truly masterful.

Upon hearing this, Madam Li frowned, her gaze shifting back and forth between Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe, her eyes filled with doubt.

Her expression was shrouded in mystery, making it difficult to decipher.

“Madam,” Yan Rugo’s lips curled into a cold smile, her eyes gleaming with confidence, “this is all a frame-up!” Like a seasoned general, she remained calm and composed in the face of danger, speaking eloquently and recounting the ins and outs of the matter.

She not only revealed the truth behind the old case, but also pointed out how the higher-ups carried out the conspiracy step by step.

She took out the yellowed file; every piece of evidence was clear and powerful, every word resounding and hitting the nail on the head.

As Madam Li listened to Yan Rugo's account, her face gradually turned ashen, and the teacup in her hand trembled slightly from the force she used.

When she saw the shocking records in the case file, she finally believed everything Yan Rugo had said.

"Guards!" Madam Li shouted sharply, causing the entire hall to tremble.

Several servants immediately stepped forward, tied the high-ranking official up, and forced him to kneel on the ground.

The high-ranking official was now ashen-faced; all his attempts at sophistry seemed utterly futile.

With the arrest of the high-ranking officials, the truth came to light, and Yan Rugo and Xu Xinghe became great contributors to the mansion, earning the respect of everyone.

Yan Rugo's position in the mansion was now as secure as Mount Tai, and no one dared to point fingers at her anymore.

A few days later, Madam Li granted Yan Rugo special permission to go to the market to purchase goods.

As Yan Rugo stepped out of the mansion, a gentle breeze blew by, but it made her feel that something was amiss.

She keenly sensed that several gazes were constantly fixed on her, like thorns in her back, like shadows following her everywhere.

She glanced around calmly. Everything seemed peaceful and serene, and the hustle and bustle of the city was still incessant. But she always felt that beneath this seemingly calm surface, an undercurrent was surging.

Yan Rugo took a deep breath, a hint of wariness flashing in her eyes, but a meaningful smile appeared on her lips. She said softly, "It seems that someone can't wait any longer."
