Chapter 233 Whereabouts

I was thinking of writing this at noon, but I'm only getting around to it now. It's easy to recognize a mistake, but difficult to change it.

I recommend a truly excellent book—The Father of the Chainsaw. I found it while I was looking for something to read; although it's an entertaining read, I enjoyed it.

—The following is the main text—

Li Daozong opened his eyes and looked at the three people in front of him. He was suddenly startled, but his years of experience in battle made him calm down quickly. He didn't shout or yell, and Li Xingzhi didn't have to do anything.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?"

Looking at Li Daozong, who had quickly calmed down, Li Xingzhi felt a sense of admiration. He truly deserved to be called a great general! He could always calm down so quickly.

"Are you Li Xueyan's father?" Li Xingzhi knew that the other party's identity was not simple, but none of that mattered to him. The only thing that was somewhat relevant was the identity of 'Li Xueyan's father'.

"Yan'er? How is she in Chang'an?" Li Daozong asked hurriedly. He thought of his daughter Li Xueyan, and a look of worry appeared on his face. He didn't even bother to ask why the three of them were in the camp.

“She’s doing very well in Chang’an.” Li Xingzhi looked at the father who doted on his daughter and a smile appeared on his face, his tone becoming more affectionate. “We came here to deliver a message for her and to give her our regards to your uncle.”

As he spoke, he pulled a letter from his sleeve and handed it over.

Li Daozong took the letter, ignoring the several "uninvited guests" beside him. He lit the oil lamp and eagerly unfolded the letter, reading it word by word before finally feeling relieved. When he looked up at Li Xingzhi and the other two, his usually stern expression softened. Clearly, Li Xueyan had said something to him in the letter.

This is actually a good thing for Li Xingzhi, saving him the trouble of explaining.

After receiving the letter, Li Daozong's expression became unusually uncharacteristically flustered. He stroked his beard with slight embarrassment before slowly saying, "Yan'er has been by my side since she was little. Now that she lives alone in Chang'an, I can't help but worry about her. I hope you won't laugh at me, my dear nephew." A hint of worry flashed across his eyes when he mentioned Chang'an.

"My uncle's love for his daughter is truly enviable."

"You are truly skilled and daring! Not only did you venture deep into the barren plains, but you also infiltrated this heavily guarded military camp in the middle of the night. If all the soldiers of the Tang Dynasty had such abilities, what would be the point of fighting? If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed that there were such capable people in the world."

Li Xingzhi smiled without saying a word as he watched Li Daozong's sigh.

“Since you’ve come to visit in the middle of the night, I can’t very well hold a banquet. I suppose you don’t want to stay long either. What else is there? Let’s talk about it all at once!” Li Daozong was not a worldly-wise man. Looking at the expressions of the three people in front of him, he knew that they had come to deliver more than just a letter.

Upon hearing this, Li Xingzhi stopped hesitating and said directly, "Since Uncle speaks so frankly, I won't beat around the bush either. Besides seeing the mighty Tang army and delivering a message, what else do you want to inquire about? There are two of us."

"Oh? Who are you? Tell me."

"One of them was called Wang Erlang, and the other was called Xue Rengui."

“Wang Erlang and Xue Rengui?!” Li Zongdao’s eyes flashed with a sharp light as he glanced at Li Xingzhi meaningfully. Stroke his long beard, he said, “Birds of a feather flock together! If you asked who else they were, I might not know. But these two are always at the forefront of battle, incredibly brave, and their sharpness is such that even I have to look at them with disdain. They were only recently promoted to centurions. However, you’ve come at a bad time; they’ve just been dispatched as vanguards…”

"Hmm." Li Xingzhi sighed, realizing his bad luck. "Does Uncle know which direction they went?"

Upon hearing Li Xingzhi's words, Li Daozong was about to say that it was too late for them to chase after them, but then he remembered that the people in front of him were capable of moving freely in this military camp. After a moment's hesitation, he carefully took out a prepared animal hide from his pocket. He unfolded the hide, revealing a simple map drawn on it.

Maps have always been important military maps in ancient times and should not be easily leaked. It is unknown why Li Daozong showed this map to these strangers.

He pointed to a spot in the southwest of the map, "We're right here." Then he pointed diagonally downwards, "The two of them are heading this way."

We have received word that Tuyuhun's Fuyun has abducted many Han Chinese for food and is heading this way. The two of them, leading over a hundred men on fine horses, will act as the vanguard to harass and obstruct our advance. Once our main army arrives, we can capture Fuyun alive.

Li Xingzhi was surprised that Li Zongdao had revealed all his battle strategies. Perhaps it was because Li Zongdao thought it impossible for Li Xingzhi to be a traitor.

Seeing that he had gathered enough information, he didn't want to linger any longer and said, "Since the letter has been delivered, we'll take our leave now. I hope Uncle will keep today's events a secret." Even if Li Xingzhi hadn't said this, Li Daozong wouldn't have told anyone. Besides, even if he had, no one might have believed him.
