Defeat the system! Kiss my little monster!
Chapter 13 Extended Time
The door opened and closed again. Pei Du walked over after Ling Yu left. He put all the documents in his hand on the table, with his medical record on top.
"Director, I've already compiled the previous data." Pei Du stood respectfully in front of Gong Yuanshen.
Gong Yuanshen picked up the medical record. His already cloudy eyes scanned the words on the paper, and his tone was not kind: "Cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath... You're quite ill?"
Pei Du added, "I had a fever at home before, and I'm only just recovered."
Gong Yuanshen pushed up his glasses on the bridge of his nose, closed the medical record, and glanced at Pei Du's bandaged right hand: "I think you couldn't hold on any longer, so you remembered to come over."
Pei Du knew he couldn't hide it any longer, so he covered his right hand and said, "I was bitten, but it's nothing serious."
"It'll be too late if something serious happens! You think no one's found out? Once you get infected and grow some kind of cat or dog fur and tail, you're just waiting to die!"
Anger welled up in Gong Yuanshen's eyes. He took a vial of medicine from the drawer and pushed it across the table in front of Pei Du. "Use it yourself, and don't let the military find out."
Pei Du easily took the medicine and stuffed it into his pocket. He hummed in thanks, "Thank you, Director."
Gong Yuanshen didn't give Pei Du a friendly look. He picked up the data book on the table and flipped through it page by page: "Now that your condition has improved, come back to work. The pile of documents and projects you left behind are all things you left behind. You have to finish them all within three months at the latest."
Pei Du had already prepared action plans for these projects; all that was needed was specific experiments and data recording. It shouldn't have been difficult, but after listening, Pei Du hesitated for a moment before saying, "Director, three months is too tight. How about six months?"
Pei Du coughed as he spoke, "I have someone at home to support, and he can't be away from me for too long."
Gong Yuanshen: "..."
As far as Gong Yuanshen knew, Pei Du had a fiancée. Over the years, Pei Du had spent millions on this so-called fiancée, but An Jia seemed to have no intention of marrying Pei Du at all.
Pei Du was still sending money to An Jia.
“You…” Gong Yuanshen’s lips trembled, hesitating to speak.
After his parents passed away, Pei Du spent most of his time at the laboratory. His father was also a laboratory technician, and Pei Du inherited his father's talents in many ways, later choosing to engage in xenogeneic research for an extended period of time.
Gong Yuanshen watched him grow up, from junior high school to university.
Gong Yuanshen taught Pei Du all his knowledge, and Pei Du lived up to his expectations. At a young age, he was already able to handle most of the alien experiments with ease, and even the military had heard of him.
Yet this very student, whom Gong Yuanshen was so proud of, willingly became someone else's ATM outside.
Gong Yuanshen was furious at the thought, but since this was Pei Du's private matter, he couldn't interfere too much. He only gave Pei Du a few symbolic words of advice.
"Pei Du, you're not young anymore. Sometimes you need to broaden your horizons and not put all your eggs in one basket. Do you understand?"
Pei Du paused slightly upon hearing this.
Sheng Shixian didn't know whether he was a "dog" or not. Pei Du should indeed broaden his horizons and go out to see if there were any other "dogs".
Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Pei Du nodded and said, "I know, I'll figure something out."
Seeing that Pei Du hadn't reached the point where he absolutely needed An Jia, Gong Yuanshen felt a little relieved: "Alright, I don't have anything else to say. You should hurry up and finish your projects so as not to delay the progress."
Pei Du retrieved the data booklet from the table, tidied up his things, and confirmed the next task plan with Gong Yuanshen before preparing to leave.
"Director, did you take back the missing blood vial, number 89, from my lab?" Pei Du turned around, remembering what had happened earlier, and asked Gong Yuanshen.
"Hmm." Gong Yuanshen's forehead was covered with wrinkles. His voice was deep and his light gray eyes showed an unreadable emotion. "The military has set a time limit. After you get sick, I will do the rest of the experiments for you."
Pei Du hadn't expected the military to press so hard. He lowered his eyes and said, "Thank you for your trouble, teacher."
"So what? If they want to cause trouble, I, an old man, won't put up with them! I can still do an experiment!" Gong Yuanshen sneered, a cold glint flashing on his glasses, reflecting Pei Du's face. "You don't need to have any contact with them."
Pei Du understood Gong Yuanshen's meaning: the relationship between the research institute and the military had become increasingly tense in recent years. The military was quite unhappy that the research area was failing to develop an effective vaccine while wasting a lot of resources, while the research area also opposed the military's increasingly extreme measures.
Pei Du is currently just a junior lab technician. Although he has some fame, his contact with high-ranking military officials inevitably raises suspicions about his identity.
A slight pain emanated from the wound on his right hand; the flesh that Sheng Shixian had bitten was slowly healing. He clenched his fist intentionally, feeling a pain that was also itchy.
"Director, this laboratory building is quite old. Several lights were broken on my way here. When are you planning to move to a new laboratory building?" Pei Du changed the subject.
"The new building isn't even finished yet, what's the rush?" Gong Yuanshen said, sipping his tea to calm his nerves. "You can move in whenever you develop the final design."
Pei Du thought to himself that it would take another ten or twenty years, so he sighed and said, "Alright."
Pei Du picked up his things, said goodbye to Gong Yuanshen, and then turned to open the door and walk out.
Pei Du didn't plan to stay in the laboratory any longer, but Gong Yuanshen took pity on him and extended the deadline for completing the mission. Pei Du then decided to go home as originally planned.
Pei Du had done these projects in his previous life, so doing them again now wouldn't be a burden for him.
His main purpose in coming to the laboratory this time was to test the viral cells in Sheng Shixian's body.
When Pei Du left, he made a point of saying goodbye to the person on duty. He took four or five file folders with him, intending to deal with them later when he got back.
It was already six or seven o'clock in the evening. The sky outside had darkened, casting shadows that made the old building's stairwell even darker.
Pei Du turned on his phone's flashlight as usual. The sounds of the lab technicians walking and talking could be heard from the stairwell from time to time. The dense footsteps were sometimes loud and sometimes soft, and the sounds echoing in his ears gradually disappeared as Pei Du walked down the stairs.
Pei Du stopped when he passed by the restroom on the third floor again. This restroom was older than the others, and few lab technicians would be willing to come here.
Pei Du looked at the light emanating from the bathroom and recalled the white sphere he had seen earlier. It was like an illusion, vanishing from Pei Du's sight in an instant.
Pei Du paused slightly, but still went inside.
The lab technicians at this location were all working. Pei Du looked up and observed the wall above the restroom. Apart from the peeling white paint and cracks, he couldn't see anything unusual about it.
Pei Du stopped in front of the innermost toilet stall. The door, which had been tightly closed, was now half-open, revealing about a third of the interior.
