Divorced woman with child travels through time
Chapter 74 The Cook
Ouyang Jin was also very happy and decided to do as Chen Niangzi said from now on: drink more milk, sleep more, sunbathe more and practice martial arts to grow taller.
Meanwhile, Master Ouyang, eager to put aside his official duties, returned. Seeing that Ouyang Jin had indeed grown taller, he stroked his beard with great satisfaction. "As expected of Madam Chen," he thought, "though she has some knowledge of pharmacology, she's a good person, truly."
Chen Wenfang waited until almost afternoon, when it was time to close her stall, and then went to buy more money. Actually, Chen Wenfang's herbs were unique, and because they were effective, they sold very well. Uncle Liu and Aunt Liu's vegetables, eggs, and old hens were also doing well; they were honest people with good reputations, and their products sold quite well too. However, they didn't earn as much money as Chen Wenfang. Although Chen Wenfang's chickens were almost ready to grow, she didn't plan to sell them; she intended to keep them for herself. Moreover, Chen Wenfang was now learning from Aunt Liu how to train the hens to brood, so she could raise chicks herself and ensure she and her baby received adequate nutrition.
As usual, she ordered fifty catties of meat from Boss Li, along with some large bones and offal. Since they had beef on hand, Chen Wenfang also cut three catties. Ouyang Jin was truly generous, giving her another five taels of silver. Adding the two taels she'd earned from buying herbs, Chen Wenfang planned to save only one tael and spend the rest, as she intended to buy cotton quilts. She didn't know why cotton quilts existed in this era; it didn't seem like something from the Song Dynasty. She'd heard they were invented by a recently enthroned emperor, but unfortunately, he died young, only living a few years. Chen Wenfang wasn't very good at history and didn't care about such things. She planned to rent a carriage to go back later, since she had so much stuff.
First, I bought Zhao Lue a set of coarse cloth clothes from a clothing store near the restaurant. It was alright, not particularly expensive. It cost half a tael of silver.
Then she bought five cotton quilts. Chen Wenfang had come to a realization: now that she had money, she couldn't suffer. The quilts were quite expensive, costing her about three taels of silver. She also bought some pots, pans, trays, cups, and seasonings. She bought another fifty jin of grain. After buying everything and renting a car, Chen Wenfang returned to her stall and gave some of the remaining items to the owners of the neighboring stalls. She also received peaches, plums, and a pile of green vegetables, lettuce, and carrots from the owners.
People in ancient times were so warm and hospitable, Chen Wenfang was very happy. She bought several more pounds of maltose. Making candy herself was too hard work, and with the hot weather, she didn't want to move at all. She heard that wealthy families had already started eating ice to cool off. She also went to the bookstore and bought some paper and pens for each of the three children. Although she bought the cheapest ones, Aunt Liu was very touched. She also bought several pounds of osmanthus cake for the children to snack on.
Chen Wenfang's rented carriage was large; even after putting the quilts and rice on it, there was still plenty of space. Seeing this, she asked Uncle Liu to tie the wheelbarrow to the back as well, and they all rode on it home together. They took the main road, but detoured, avoiding Wangjiazhuang. They went to Aunt Liu's house first, and then delivered the things to Chen Wenfang from Aunt Liu's house, so as not to make the people of Wangjiazhuang envious.
When they returned to Aunt Liu's house, Dazhuang and Shitou had not yet come back. Uncle Liu Hai helped unload the things, loaded them onto a wheelbarrow, and delivered them to Chen Wenfang's house.
Uncle Liu's truck was loaded with meat and rice, so Chen Wenfang and Aunt Liu each took one quilt, and the others were locked up in the yard. They'll come back for them later.
Uncle Liu Hai ran fast, and before he even reached Chen Wenfang's house, he shouted, "Dazhuang, Shitou, come out and help me carry these things!"
Then three long echoes were heard saying, "Coming~ Coming~ Here we come, la la."
Chen Xuanyu came out with his two older brothers.
One person helped push the cart, another helped hold it up, and yet another pulled a bag of snacks off the cart and carried it in his hand, pretending to help. Of course, it was Chen Xuanyu who took the snacks; his exact words were, "I'm small, but the thought is what counts."
Uncle Liu struggled to resist and said, "You don't need to push the cart. Dazhuang, help me go home. Your sister-in-law Chen bought a quilt and it's at our house. She hasn't brought it over yet. You and Shitou go and help her get it."
Dazhuang responded and went, while Shitou reached out to Chen Xuanyu. Chen Xuanyu knowingly opened the pastries, took a few pieces and placed them in his hand. Only then was Shitou satisfied and gave two pieces to Dazhuang before they walked home together.
On the way, they ran into Chen Wenfang and her husband carrying blankets. Dazhuang took the key from Aunt Liu and opened the door to get the blankets himself.
Uncle Liu and Aunt Liu unloaded their things and went home. Da Zhuang and Shi Tou did the same, putting their things down and going home. It was getting dark, so Chen Wenfang didn't want to keep them any longer, only telling them to come over for dinner in a few days after Boss Li delivered the meat.
With all the things piled up inside, Chen Wenfang took a sip of water and sat down to rest. Seeing this, Zhao Lue said, "Thank you for your hard work, Madam Chen."
Chen Wenfang pulled out two sets of coarse clothes that had been given to him and said, "These are for you as a thank-you gift for Xuanzai and the others' teachers. We are poor people, so please don't find them too cheap."
Zhao smiled and said, "Not at all, Madam Chen, you're too kind."
Chen Wenfang said, "It's nothing, it's what I should do. If you have time, change those clothes and I'll wash them and have Dazhuang take them back to Uncle Liu Hai. It's not good to always wear other people's clothes."
Zhao smiled and said, "Okay, but are you hungry?"
Chen Wenfang said, "I'm not hungry, what's wrong?"
Zhao Lue said, "I'm a little hungry."
Chen Wenfang pointed to the bag of pastries and said, "Then have some pastries."
Zhao Lue said, "I want to eat something hot."
Chen Wenfang sighed and said, "But I'm so tired today. Why don't you do it yourself?"
Zhao Lue said helplessly, "Never mind, I'll just have some snacks."
"Okay, sure!" Chen Wenfang laughed. *Do you think I'm some kind of cook? I'm tired, I'm not going to wait on anyone.*
