Divorced woman with child travels through time

Chapter 57 Boss Li Delivers Meat

After everyone else left, Chen Wenfang silently picked up her chopsticks and tasted the syrup. "Mmm, so sweet..."

A few days later, Carpenter Wang delivered the cabinet. He added some small toys for Chen Xuanyu as usual, took the money, put it down, and left.

Aunt Chuntao's rice jar was also delivered. Chen Wenfang paid for it and then left with her entourage, without saying much.

Chen Wenfang didn't take it to heart. She just lived her life quietly.

A few days later, Chen Wenfang remembered that the pork she had ordered had not been delivered yet. Was the boss going to embezzle the money?

Mr. Li delivered the meat, accompanied by two employees, pushing a wheelbarrow.

Chen Wenfang opened the door and welcomed them in.

"Mr. Li is here. Please have a seat." Chen Wenfang greeted him politely.

After they sat down inside, Chen Wenfang poured each of them a bowl of water and added syrup.

Mr. Li took a sip and found it was actually sugar water. Hmm, this Mrs. Chen is quite particular.

After taking a sip of water to moisten his throat, Mr. Li said, "Madam Chen, I originally planned to deliver meat to you a while ago. But then I heard on the street that you had a little trouble, so I thought I'd come later. To avoid being seen, I took the small path behind your mountain." Mr. Li chuckled and said, "This mountain is a bit dense, and it might not be safe for just two people, so I brought another person with me."

Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "The trees are indeed quite dense. I would be scared if I walked alone."

Boss Li stood up, lifted the tarpaulin off the wheelbarrow, pointed to the pork on it, and said, “I weighed this piece of meat and it’s 65 jin. If you have any objections to cutting it into 15 jin and selling it to someone else first, I’ll take all of this meat and cut 50 jin for you first, and then sell the remaining 15 jin to someone else. Madam Chen, you pick and choose, see which parts you don’t want, and I’ll cut some off.”

Chen Wenfang thought to herself that this Mr. Li was indeed a kind person, and he was so good at doing business. So she smiled and said, "You've already brought it over, how can I ask you to take it back? It's such a long way."

Mr. Li laughed heartily, "It's alright, we agreed on fifty catties, so it's fifty catties. It's fine for me to take it back."

Chen Wenfang thought to herself, "I don't believe you for a second," but smiled and said, "Since they've all been delivered, I'll take them all. Give me a discount."

Mr. Li grinned and said, "Mrs. Chen is so straightforward. I'll give you a discount. How about this, we agreed on 30 coins for 15 catties, so I'll give you 25 coins per catty for these 50 catties, is that alright?"

Chen Wenfang smiled and said, "Sure." Actually, she had already inquired and found that a piece of meat weighing about 50 catties usually costs around 23 coins, but since the three of them were delivering it, they would naturally have to pay some travel expenses, so it was normal for it to be a bit more expensive.

When Mr. Li saw that Chen Wenfang wasn't haggling over the price, he was very happy. He pulled up the pork, revealing the offal and tail underneath, and said, "Mrs. Chen, you're so kind. These offal pieces are a gift for you."

Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "Mr. Li gave me so much, isn't that a loss? Let's stay here for lunch."

Mr. Li smiled and waved his hands repeatedly, saying, "That won't do. There are three of us grown men, and Mrs. Chen will be busy for a long time. No, no, that won't do."

Chen Wenfang said, "It's alright. My Uncle Liu Hai and his family will be coming over later. He'll keep you company. It'll be fine."

After saying that, he shouted loudly, "Xuanzai, go to Shi Tou's house and invite his whole family over for dinner."

Chen Xuanyu responded from afar, came out of the house to greet Boss Li, and then disappeared in a flash.

They ran too fast; Mr. Li didn't even have time to respond.

Chen Wenfang felt embarrassed and apologized, saying, "He was eager to play with the other children. I'm sorry."

Mr. Li waved his hand, "Kids are all like that, it's alright, it's alright. Madam Chen, where do you put this meat? I'll give it to you."

"Get through it."

Chen Wenfang said, "Put it in the kitchen. Speaking of which, Mr. Li, did you bring a knife? Could you help me chop the bones and cut the meat into large strips? My knife isn't that good."

Mr. Li said, "That's easy. I reckon you couldn't cut it by yourself. I brought a knife, but I only brought one cutting board. You should have one at home, right?"

"Yes, yes, there's a piece." Chen Wenfang led them to the kitchen, and the three of them sat down by the stove. Boss Li found a hard spot outside the kitchen and started chopping and separating the meat with a cutting board.

Chen Wenfang didn't sit idle either; she went to her room, retrieved the silver, and gave it to Boss Li.

"Mr. Li, here is one tael of silver, here is six mace, plus twenty-five copper coins. Please keep them safe."

Mr. Li hurriedly wiped his hands, took the silver, but refused to accept the twenty-five coins, saying, "Madam Chen is generous, and I shouldn't be stingy either. Let's just forget about this small change."

Chen Wenfang had no choice but to give up. She said, "I'll leave after lunch. It'll be a simple home-cooked meal, don't mind it."

Mr. Li thanked her again, saying, "Mrs. Chen, you're too kind. We'll be troubling you then."

Chen Wenfang replied again, "Not at all, it's my pleasure. You all go ahead with your work, I'll go pick some vegetables."

Mr. Li nodded.

Soon after, Chen Xuanyu arrived with Aunt Liu and her family. This time, Uncle Liu Hai hadn't gone to the fields; instead, he brought two pounds of peanuts, two bunches of green beans, a few eggplants, three loofahs, and two bottle gourds.

Alright, Chen Wenfang will just pick a bunch of greens and leave the rest for now.
