Divorced woman with child travels through time

Chapter 5: After a good meal, take a stroll.

Chen Wenfang and her son ate their fill, but there was still some left over, which they put in a broken bowl. Chen Wenfang then went to fetch water. After eating and drinking their fill, they started to tidy themselves up and their room. Although they didn't know where they were, they were living here now, so this was home. They were poor, but they wanted to make themselves as comfortable as possible.

Without further ado, she boiled water in a pot and let the baby play in the room. Chen Wenfang's ex-husband cheated on her when she was pregnant, and they argued about divorce constantly after the child was born. She naively thought he would change, but he cheated again when the child was a year old. Unable to bear it any longer, she divorced him when the child was around two years old. She raised the child alone, stumbling and struggling, which made her a very independent person who relies on herself to solve everything. She took some dry grass from the yard, tied it into a bundle, and then tied it to a long stick. First, she carefully swept the dust off the roof beams, then tied a large broom to it. Although the broom wasn't tied very well, she managed to clean the room.

The water was almost hot, and the weather wasn't cold, so she carried the hot water to the yard and gave the baby a warm bath, letting him play and dry his hair. People in ancient times had long hair; modern short hair is better—it dried quickly. She continued boiling water; it was time to bathe herself too. Seeing that she didn't have enough firewood, Chen Wenfang headed towards the back of the hill.

"Mom, I want to go help too!" Chen Xuanyu insisted on going with them.

"Come on, my little one can help Mommy now!"

"Mom, where is this? It doesn't look like our old home," Chen Xuanyu asked her softly. Having grown up in a single-parent family, Chen Xuanyu was a very perceptive and cautious person.

“This is a strange place. Mom doesn’t know where we are either. But it seems like we’ve traveled through time. Traveling through time is like falling asleep and ending up in another place, understand?” Chen Wenfang explained as best she could.

"Then, can we still go back?" Chen Xuanyu asked his mother.

"You probably can't go back. Just stay here and make the best of it..." Chen Wenfang patted the child's head.

In the 21st century, I'd probably be running a high fever like a child, until I lose consciousness and probably die.

Let's just live this life to the fullest...

"We're new to this place, so please be careful what you say if you meet strangers, okay, sweetie?"

Although he didn't understand what it meant to talk nonsense, Chen Xuanyu obediently agreed.

Chen Wenfang dug up some cogongrass and kudzu roots, filled a bucket with them, and tied firewood with vines to carry on her back. Chen Xuanyu followed suit, carrying a small bundle of firewood as well. Together they returned home, boiled water, took a bath, tidied up their things, and then put the cogongrass and kudzu roots in a pot to boil. Only then did Chen Wenfang feel alive again.

After taking a nap with her baby at noon, Chen Wenfang noticed that the kudzu root in the pot was cooked. After eating, she decided to take the baby out for a walk to check out the surrounding environment. The location seemed a bit remote, otherwise they wouldn't have seen anyone for several days.

The house is in a nice location, nestled against a mountain. There's a patch of wasteland to the right of the yard, a pond to the left, several fields further ahead, and a river in the distance. There's what looks like a road at the entrance, but it's overgrown with weeds and hard to tell if it is or not; it blends right into the wasteland. Chen Wenfang picked up a long branch and started tapping it as she walked. It should be around the time of Xiaoman (the 8th solar term) this season. Afraid of being bitten by snakes, she decided to take the child on a spring outing, since it was warm and breezy.
