Divorced woman with child travels through time
Chapter 43 Who's Afraid of Arguing?
Uncle Liu helped pack up the things. He had sold all his peanuts and gave the remaining ones to Uncle Tian. Uncle Tian gave Chen Wenfang six pairs of slippers, three pairs for adults and three pairs for children. Chen Xuanyu was very happy; now he had slippers too.
The group packed up their things and prepared to go home. Just as they reached the main road, Aunt Wang, who sold vegetables, suddenly approached them, wanting to walk with them. Aunt Liu said, "Aunt Wang, aren't you going that way? You're not going the same way as us."
Aunt Wang said with a smile, "Where can't we go? Going together shows our closeness." Then, she pretended to casually glance at the items in the car and exclaimed, "Oh my, you bought so many things! Cuihua, you've made quite a bit of money!"
Aunt Liu explained helplessly, "These belong to Sister Chen. She and her son can't farm, so they can only buy grain."
Aunt Wang slapped her thigh and exclaimed, "Oh my, Madam Chen is really capable! She made so much money from selling just a few herbs. How is she so good at selling them?" Her tone sounded off.
Chen Wenfang said coldly, "What kind of herbs can sell for so much? This is the money I earned by delivering food to Young Master Ouyang."
Aunt Wang teased, "Young Master Ouyang must have taken a fancy to you, a widow, to give you so much silver."
Chen Wenfang said angrily, "Aunt Wang is so old, she should watch her words and be more considerate."
Aunt Wang was just looking for trouble out of envy. When Chen Wenfang confronted her, she immediately started cursing, "You two outsiders, farming our land and picking herbs from our mountains, and you dare to steal my business?" She then pointed at Chen Wenfang, "And you, shameless bitch, we, Jin Hua, are doing you a favor by arranging a marriage for you. You ungrateful thing, who knows where you got your money?"
Aunt Liu was also furious and scolded her, "What nonsense are you talking about? Get out, get out! Who wants to go with you?"
Chen Wenfang also scolded her, "How can you be so shameless, you old hag? Your mouth is on your ass, everything you say stinks. If you like Jin Hua so much, why don't you ask her to find you a match? Marry Wang Xiucai as a concubine, then you won't have to sell eggs anymore."
Aunt Wang was so angry that she kept swearing at Chen Niangzi for a long time, almost rolling her eyes. Chen Niangzi's mouth was too venomous. She couldn't out-argue Chen Niangzi. So she decided to leave. She couldn't show weakness, so she continued, "You just wait. Next time you sell eggs, I'll smash your stall."
Chen Wenfang shouted, "Get out!" Aunt Liu also yelled, "Get out!"
Chen Xuanyu and Shi Tou Dazhuang both shouted "Get out! Get out! Get out!" Uncle Liu Hai didn't say anything, but silently picked up his carrying pole.
Chen Xuanyu, holding a pancake in his hand, angrily threw it. He missed, and Wang Ershen threw it at her feet. Unexpectedly, she picked it up and ran away.
Everyone was speechless at this scene; Aunt Wang really doesn't want to suffer any loss.
Chen Wenfang looked at Chen Xuanyu and said, "You're wasting your time."
Chen Xuanyu said apologetically, "It won't happen again, Mother."
Chen Wenfang said to Aunt Liu, "She only has a basket of eggs and a few chickens, right? There are other people selling eggs and vegetables over there, so why are you saying you're stealing her business?"
Aunt Liu said helplessly, "That person is stingy. Last time when I was buying things at the village entrance, she asked me, 'Where did you buy your eggs from? Didn't you buy thirty eggs from me?' I told her that she raised about thirty chickens last year, which was the most in the village. Later, when the chickens started brooding, I bought a few chicks from her. I raised them well, and this year I have about twenty. When she heard that a batch of chickens died, she told everyone that I poisoned them."
Aunt Liu looked at Chen Wenfang apologetically and said, "It's also my fault that I've dragged you into this."
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "How can you blame yourself for this? It's her problem. We live so far away from her. Who would do something so immoral? She must have offended the neighbors, and someone is deliberately trying to harm her and drag you into it."
Chen Wenfang added, "Besides, judging from her tone, she's cut from the same cloth as that matchmaker Jin Hua. I'm good to you, so naturally she'll insult me too. I'm fine, don't worry. I won't let her bully me. Look how badly I scolded her just now."
Aunt Liu laughed and said, "That's true. With your mouth, not just anyone can bully you."
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "Right? I think so too."
Everyone laughed and joked along the way, not feeling tired at all. As usual, Uncle Liu helped Chen Wenfang put her things away before the family went back to their own home. Chen Wenfang watched them leave, closed the courtyard gate, and began to pack her things.
The rice jar she bought from Aunt Chuntao wouldn't arrive for a few more days. She forgot to ask if the jar had a lid. Chen Wenfang piled all the rice on the edge of the kang (heated brick bed) in the bedroom, next to where she slept, like a hardworking little squirrel guarding its granary.
Chen Wenfang had repaired the broken cabinet in the kitchen, cleaned it, and now it could be used to store things. Then, looking at her few broken bowls, she realized she had forgotten to buy more. The bowls she had bought last time were only enough for eating; she needed to buy some soup bowls and small bowls so she could throw away the missing ones. Oh well, she'd go to Wangjiazhuang to buy more bowls tomorrow.
I doubt any cats would eat the salted fish if I hung it on the wall; it's so salty. I'll just put it in the cupboard and take it out tomorrow.
After packing her things away, Chen Wenfang used two pots. One was for boiling water, and the other was for boiling meat to remove the blood and impurities; she would use the meat to make twice-cooked pork the next day. She also put the fish in the kitchen, checked it, and seeing it was still alive, changed the water. She ate a little something, then washed up and went to bed.
