Divorced woman with child travels through time
Chapter 41 Not Short of Money
Touching the few gold ingots in her bag, Chen Wenfang became even happier, her smile exceptionally bright. But let's leave that aside for now.
Wang Ershen, who was selling vegetables not far away, saw Chen Wenfang and asked around. She learned that Chen Wenfang had just delivered something to the Ouyang residence.
Thinking to herself, "She must have received another generous tip." A little envious, seeing Aunt Liu's stall packed with people and her eggs selling while her own eggs weren't selling, she became even angrier and spat on the ground. A vegetable vendor nearby glanced at her and said, "Watch your mouth, you're almost spitting over here." Aunt Wang chuckled awkwardly, rubbed her foot, and wiped away the thick phlegm.
As soon as Chen Wenfang arrived at her stall, customers came to buy herbs, and Chen Wenfang greeted them warmly while packing them. By noon, most of the goods were sold out; Aunt Liu still had some peanuts left, and the eggs were also sold cheaply, as they wouldn't keep well in the hot weather. At midday, the sun was strong, and there were fewer people. Chen Wenfang took Aunt Liu and her three children to go shopping.
Upon seeing a vendor selling steamed buns, Chen Xuanyu said, "Mom, I'm hungry. Buy some."
Seeing steamed sugar cakes for sale, Chen Xuanyu said, "Mom, I've never eaten this before, let's buy some."
Chen Xuanyu climbed up the hill and saw vendors selling fried dough sticks and candied hawthorns. He said, "I've never tried these before. I'll buy some."
Chen Xuanyu, taking advantage of the situation, said, "Mother, I want to eat the pastries that Madam Ouyang gave me last time."
Aunt Liu looked at the piles of things that Shi Tou and Da Zhuang were each carrying, and then looked at Chen Wenfang, implying that they shouldn't be so wasteful. Fortunately, Chen Wenfang decisively refused, saying, "Those are snacks from the restaurant, they're ridiculously expensive. We can't eat like that for now. We need to buy meat first."
Upon hearing about eating meat, Chen Xuanyu immediately stopped eating his snacks. "Let's go buy some meat first."
Chen Wenfang said, "Come on, there's a cooked food stall over there. Let's take some back to the stall to eat. Uncle Liu Hai is still hungry."
Aunt Liu was very pleased.
Chen Wenfang went to the shop and bought a cooked chicken, which was then chopped up. She also bought two jin (approximately 1 kg) of pork head meat. With so many children, she needed to buy more meat to ensure they would have enough to eat. Uncle Liu Hai even bought two liang (approximately 100 ml) of liquor.
Let's go back and fill our stomachs first. Back at the stall, we took out the meat and ate it with steamed buns. Uncle Liu Hai looked at the wine, deeply moved. What a thoughtful woman! Having such a good neighbor is better than any relatives or friends. Eating meat and wine, he felt incredibly happy.
Aunt Liu was also quite moved. She said that going to the market was always tiring and frugal, and she couldn't bear to buy anything to eat, just grabbing a simple flatbread she brought with her. The savory, flavorful, and chewy pork head meat was incredibly delicious. The roast chicken was also tender and flavorful. Fang'er is truly generous to her family!
Shi Tou and Da Zhuang ate with gusto, their mouths greasy. Chen Xuanyu, being small, ate a chicken foot and a pancake and was full in no time.
Chen Wenfang also ate a pancake. For her, the cold meat, without any chili or garlic sauce, was too much for a picky eater like her who thought she would have enough to eat once she had money. She only ate a few bites of roast chicken before stopping.
Chen Wenfang then asked Shi Tou to deliver some more chicken and meat to Uncle Tian and his companion, who lived not far away.
Watching them drink and eat from afar, Aunt Wang's eyes reddened. It was one thing for Madam Chen to sell herbal medicine, but that wretched Cuihua, a poor outsider, dared to steal her business selling eggs. Eating the bread, its surface stained with bran, she found it increasingly difficult to swallow. Didn't she realize there were so many stalls, and many selling eggs, all just selling their surplus? How was she stealing her business? Ultimately, she was taking advantage of Aunt Liu being a lone outsider.
Seeing that everyone had almost finished eating, Chen Wenfang pulled Aunt Liu to go shopping.
Aunt Liu said anxiously, "You still want to buy more? You've already spent quite a bit today."
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "If I don't buy it, what will I eat when I get home? We're out of oil and salt."
Aunt Liu laughed and said, "Alright, then we have to buy it. You scared me. It's like you hate money. You have to spend it as soon as you earn it."
Chen Wenfang said, "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing." She still took the three children shopping. Chen Wenfang was annoyed that Chen Xuanyu always wanted to buy things, so she gave each of the three children ten coins and said, "I won't buy you any more snacks. This is your pocket money. Buy whatever you want to eat."
Aunt Liu quickly snatched the money from Shi Tou and Da Zhuang's hands, saying urgently, "This is not allowed, Fang'er, you keep it."
Chen Wenfang then divided the money among the two children, saying, "Why can't I? They call me sister-in-law, so I can give them pocket money." She then said to Aunt Liu, "This is what I gave you; you can't take any more of theirs."
Shi Tou and Da Zhuang stared at the ten coins in their hands, speechless. They had never even had a single coin in their entire lives, let alone ten.
Shi Tou and Da Zhuang looked at Aunt Liu with expectant eyes. Aunt Liu, seeing the children's gaze, suddenly felt a lump in her throat. Her two children were usually very sensible, never asking for anything, and Aunt Liu had never bought them snacks or given them pocket money. She realized they actually needed things just as much. Aunt Liu nodded, a rare occurrence for her.
The two children accepted the money with delight and thanked Chen Wenfang repeatedly. Chen Wenfang was happy to hear their sincere gratitude and felt the money was well spent.
They started buying things again. This time, Chen Wenfang bought a veiled hat and a straw hat for everyone, so that they could use it when they were doing things in the future.
