Divorced woman with child travels through time

Chapter 26 Delivering Meat and Furniture

Chen Wenfang and her son ate two and a half large bowls of rice cooked on the stove. It was so delicious! Humans are indeed carnivores. It must be because they haven't eaten meat for a long time, otherwise they wouldn't have eaten so much.

Chen Xuanyu ate a small bowl and wanted to eat more, but Chen Wenfang patted his bulging little belly and said, "You can't eat anymore, you won't be able to digest it. How about we save it for this afternoon? Look, there's still so much meat left, we can't finish it all today."

Chen Xuanyu looked longingly at the small bowl in his hand and said seriously, "Alright then, I'll eat it later."

After washing the dishes, Chen Wenfang brought out a large bowl, intending to put some meat in it to take to Aunt Liu. Chen Xuanyu understood immediately upon seeing the bowl.

She started to throw a tantrum, saying, "Mom, you've already taken everything, what am I going to eat? I need to eat again tomorrow!"

She said with a pained expression, "Mom, please bring less. I don't have enough to eat. I can finish it all."

Chen Wenfang chuckled and said, "Alright, alright, then we'll bring a small bowl, okay? Aunt Liu is good to us, so we should be good to others too. That's called reciprocity, and that's how good relationships are built, understand?"

Chen Xuanyu reluctantly said, "Then just a small bowl will do. Actually, I can really finish it all."

Chen Wenfang filled a small bowl with the pile of food, locked the door, and took the child to Aunt Liu's house. Aunt Liu's house was also a detached house. Before they even entered, Shitou, who was playing in the yard, saw Chen Wenfang and rushed inside to call for Aunt Liu.

"Mother, Mother, Sister-in-law Chen is here..."

Aunt Liu came out to greet Chen Wenfang, and seeing the meat in her hand, she said, "You're here, why are you carrying something?"

"I made a bowl of braised pork, and I wanted you to try my cooking." Chen Wenfang handed the bowl to Aunt Liu.

"You," Aunt Liu glanced at Chen Wenfang, took the bowl from her hand and said, "Don't be so polite next time. Pork is so expensive, and you two are so thin. You need to eat more."

Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "Okay, okay. I'll send it again next time." Haha

Aunt Liu was amused and said, "Then let's have lunch here."

The stone stood on tiptoe beside him, smelling the meat; it smelled so good.

Aunt Liu handed the meat to Shi Tou and said, "Put it in the kitchen cabinet. It's for you to eat with your lunch. Don't you dare steal any."

Stone sniffed, completely oblivious, then reached out and picked up a piece of meat, putting it in his mouth and saying, "Mom, the meat Aunt Chen cooked is so delicious..."

Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "I'm skipping lunch. Today is the day I arranged to have the furniture delivered by carpenter Wang, and I'm worried he might be coming over at the same time."

Aunt Liu said, "Alright, then I won't keep you here. I'll treat you and your daughter next time." Then she said to Shi Tou, "Don't eat it, put it in the kitchen."

He went into the room, took out a bag of money, and put it in Chen Wenfang's hand, saying, "This is the share of the candy sales, four hundred coins, you keep it."

Chen Wenfang declined, saying, "There aren't that many. You only have ten jars. Even if I sell the two jars I brought myself, the profit share wouldn't be that much."

Aunt Liu laughed and said, "You taught us how to make peanuts too. This hundred coins is a token of our appreciation for your hard work. We can't let our apprentices starve, you know. I'd be angry if you didn't accept it!"

Seeing that Aunt Liu was truly sincere, Chen Wenfang accepted the meat and said, "Now that the meat has been delivered, I'll head back first. Come with me to Wangjiazhuang tomorrow; I'm going to buy a few jars to store grain. It'll be a bit pricey, but that's fine."

Aunt Liu replied that she would come tomorrow morning.

As soon as Chen Wenfang returned home, Wang the carpenter led two men over with the things. Wang the carpenter carried a large wooden bucket, while the two men carried a table and four stools respectively. Chen Wenfang didn't recognize them, so she opened the door, let them put the things in, and sat down to make a bowl of sweet soup for each of them.

"Master Wang, I'd like to order another cabinet and five chairs. How much would the deposit and the remaining balance cost together?"

Chen Wenfang spoke up.

Carpenter Wang took a sip of water, and lo and behold, it was sugar water. He thought to himself, "This Madam Chen is really generous."

He replied, "I still owe you one hundred coins for the last payment. How big of a cabinet do you want? How many doors? You can go to Wangjiazhuang to see the styles when you have time. A chair costs twenty-five coins. Since you buy often, I'll charge you twenty-two coins per chair. Let me pay a fifty-coin deposit."

"Alright, Master Wang, please have a seat. I'll go get you the money." Chen Wenfang went into the room, put the money in her pocket under her pillow, counted out the money she was going to give to Carpenter Wang, and handed it to him with both hands. "Please count it."

He then spoke up, "Who are these two? I don't know many people around here either, please forgive me."

Upon hearing this, Wang Ximao and Wang Laizi, who had been drinking sugar water with their heads down, looked up and sized up Chen Wenfang.

The woman in front of me was in her early twenties, with bright eyes and white teeth, a tall and straight figure, a slender waist and full hips, and a very generous demeanor.

Feeling a little flustered, Wang Ximao lowered his head and took another sip of water. It was so sweet.

Carpenter Wang introduced them, saying, "These two are my nephews from the Fang family. This is Wang Hongfang, and this is Wang Qingfang. They usually help me deliver goods."

Wang Ximao and Wang Laizi were only eighteen or nineteen years old. They spent their days eating, drinking, and loafing around, neglecting their work and developing delicate skin. In Chen Wenfang's eyes, they were just like the street urchins from her previous life.

Wang Ximao and Wang Laizi stood up and greeted Chen Wenfang, "Hello, Madam Chen."

Chen Wenfang smiled too.

Wang Ximao felt the syrup was getting sweeter and sweeter, almost to the point of warming his heart.
