Divorced woman with child travels through time
Chapter 24 With grain at home, one has nothing to fear.
I bought another mosquito net. Although it's still a bit chilly at night, there are already mosquitoes during the day.
She stuck the hairpin she'd bought directly into her hair, threw away the tree branch, and left the three children at the stall. Chen Wenfang then pulled Aunt Liu to go shopping for vegetables. Chen Wenfang thought to herself, "I want to eat meat, eat meat! It's been almost a month since I've smelled any meat."
Upon arriving at the butcher shop, they found the owner, surnamed Li, named Li San. He was a burly, dark-skinned man with bulging eyes, who at first glance resembled Zhang Fei from the classic Three Kingdoms, though without a beard. Seeing Chen Wenfang and her group approach, he hurriedly greeted them, "What kind of meat would Madam Chen like to buy?"
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "How did Boss Li know my surname is Chen?"
Mr. Li laughed heartily, "Mrs. Chen's herbs are famous; everyone in Lijia Town knows them. I'm at the meat stall every day, so of course I know them."
Chen Wenfang smiled and said, "So that's how it is. How much is this meat?"
Mr. Li laughed and said, "This pork is 35 coins a pound for fatty pork and 30 coins a pound for lean pork. Madam Chen, you can have it for 2 coins less per pound."
Chen Wenfang praised, "Boss Li is such a generous person. Could you cut me two pounds of lean meat and one pound of fatty meat?"
"Alright." The shopkeeper Li stopped talking but didn't stop working. He made two cuts with his knife, weighing exactly three jin. He held up the scale high to show her and said, "Madam Chen is really generous. She gave me a good weight. You see."
Chen Wenfang smiled and said, "Of course I trust you. If Boss Li can open a shop in Lijia Town, his business must be booming and he must be very successful."
Li San laughed heartily, "Madam Chen, you really know how to talk. Here's a pig's tail for you."
Chen Wenfang thanked them again. Aunt Liu, standing nearby, was amazed.
As they left the pork shop, Aunt Liu whispered, "Fang'er, you really know how to talk. If you keep praising her, Mr. Li will give you his shop."
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "Everyone likes to hear nice things, no one is an exception. And this boss really knows how to get along with people. But doing business requires knowing how to talk. You have to praise everyone you meet. If you don't speak nicely, who will want to buy your products?"
Aunt Liu said, "What you said makes sense. Look how well your herbs sell. I need to learn from you."
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "Yes, let's work together to make it bigger and stronger, and develop it nationwide, haha..."
Aunt Liu chuckled, "You little rascal..."
As they were walking towards the grain store, an elderly woman selling vegetables nearby called out to them.
"Cuihua (Aunt Liu's original name was Li Cuihua), Madam Chen, come and see my dishes?"
Chen Wenfang looked at Aunt Liu, as if to say, "Who is this?"
Aunt Liu looked at Chen Wenfang and smiled, "Fang'er, this is Aunt Wang Er from Wangjiazhuang. She's always selling vegetables and eggs here."
Chen Wenfang and Aunt Liu walked up to her. "Hello, Second Aunt, your cabbages look so fresh and beautiful. How much are they?"
Aunt Wang smiled and said, "It's not expensive, only five coins a pound."
Chen Wenfang glanced at Aunt Liu, smiled, and said, "Then weigh me a pound."
Aunt Wang then spoke up, "How about some eggs? They're all freshly laid, very fresh."
Chen Wenfang said, "We don't need the eggs; it's too far and inconvenient."
Aunt Wang then advised, "You can get it from my place, it's very convenient."
Aunt Liu said angrily, "We have eggs at home. Fang'er bought them from our family."
Aunt Wang gave an awkward laugh and didn't say anything more. After paying, Chen Wenfang carried a bunch of vegetables to the grain and oil store.
Aunt Liu said angrily, "Other people's cabbages are two or three coins a pound, but she sells them to you for five coins. Isn't that bullying?"
Chen Wenfang laughed and said, "It's okay, just this once. I'm not one to suffer a loss."
He entered the store and shouted to the owner, "Could you please weigh out twenty catties of cornmeal, twenty catties of flour, and twenty catties of rice for me?"
Aunt Liu said, "Buying so much, we won't be able to finish it, will we?"
Chen Wenfang said, "Stocking up on some grain will give you peace of mind," and then asked, "Can the boss help with delivery? I'd also like to buy a few large jars for storing grain?"
The shopkeeper asked, "Where does your wife live?"
Chen Wenfang said, "Wangjiazhuang."
The shopkeeper shook his head and said, "It's too far, I can't deliver it, please forgive me, my lady."
Chen Wenfang then said, "Then please take the things to my herbal medicine stall and give them to Uncle Liu Hai."
The shop owner nodded and said, "Okay, I'll send it over to you in a bit."
After looking around, I bought two more pounds of baking soda to wash the pots, since cleaning up wood ash is a hassle.
After paying, Chen Wenfang went to the blacksmith shop with Aunt Liu and bought a kitchen knife, a spatula, a pot, and two lids. The only broken pot in the house was without a lid. Wang Erniu's stove was also a two-burner stove, but the other burner was empty.
I then went to the cosmetics shop next door and bought two bars of soap and two pounds of soap beans. I'll leave face cream for now; I'm still young, and more importantly, I don't have the money.
On her way back to her stall, Chen Wenfang saw someone selling eggplants and bought another pound.
The three women, carrying three children, pushed a heavy wheelbarrow home. On the last two market days, Aunt Liu had barely bought anything when she saw Chen Wenfang wanting to buy things, worried she wouldn't have enough space. Now it seemed she indeed didn't. Uncle Liu pushed the wheelbarrow, Aunt Liu carried a bag, and Chen Wenfang carried another. Chen Xuanyu walked obediently by himself, only occasionally needing a lift when tired. Chen Wenfang would then put the bags on the wheelbarrow. At these moments, Chen Wenfang felt grateful to have met Aunt Liu's family; otherwise, living alone in this remote mountain village with her children would be too difficult. She secretly resolved to treat them even better in the future…
