Divorced woman with child travels through time
Chapter 222 Trust Between Children
Da Xiong looked at his former nemesis. This was where Chu Yi lived. He had fought with him before. Although Da Xiong had more kids than Chu Yi, they were all useless and only knew how to eat. Chu Yi was a fearless fighter. Da Xiong had suffered a great loss when he clashed with him. The bite mark on his back was still there. If Chu Yi hadn't left the dilapidated temple and become a young master at Chen's restaurant, he wouldn't have been able to come all the way from the next county to live here and take up such a good place.
These homeless children can't just go into workshops or nursing homes. If they're lucky, they might become child prostitutes; if they're unlucky, they'll die somewhere unknown. Not to mention falling into the hands of traffickers, losing limbs is commonplace. That corrupt official in Linxia County has created chaos there, and they really can't survive there anymore. It's better to go to Lijia Town because there's a good official there; everyone knows that, and they want to come and get a living. But they don't dare go to nursing homes either. They can only occasionally beg for a living.
Big Bear didn't dare to completely trust him either, so he said, "Then how can you expect me to trust you?"
“Exactly, how can we believe you?” the child next to him chimed in.
Chu Yi said seriously, "Then how do you want me to prove it?"
Big Bear scratched his messy, tangled hair, looked at his pale-faced underlings, and said, "At least give them a decent meal first."
Chu nodded and said, "Okay, you wait here, I'll go buy the things and come back." Then she left.
The dirty-looking four- or five-year-old boy next to him licked his lips and leaned over to ask, "Big Brother Bear, do you think he really brought something to eat?"
Big Bear patted his head and said, "Are you hungry? If he doesn't come back, I'll go to the river to unload the goods later, and then I'll buy some food and come back."
"Okay, Big Bear Brother." Little Sprout nodded obediently. The other children, without crying or fussing, sat quietly on the ground, watching the doorway with eager eyes.
Seeing this, Big Bear also plopped down on the ground, sitting and watching the doorway like the children. Oh well, I'll just believe him this once.
Not long after, Chu Yi returned carrying two enormous paper bags.
"Here you go!" Chu Yi threw the paper packet into Da Xiong's arms. "You guys divide it yourselves, I'm not going to interfere."
He was actually serious! Big Bear excitedly opened the paper package. Three roast chickens with white flour flatbread.
"Wow!" The children all gathered around. They were dirty and smelly, with snot running down their noses and tattered shoes, but they were very sensible and did not scramble for the food.
"That's really something!" Big Bear laughed heartily, his eyes sparkling with joy. He put down the bag, rushed to the river to wash his hands, and tore the roast chicken apart.
The children lined up obediently, waiting to be fed.
"Here, this is for you." Big Bear handed over a chicken leg, and Little Sprout happily blew a snot bubble from his nose. Sprout was only four years old, the thinnest, and not in good health, so Big Bear always gave it to him first.
"Thank you, Big Bear Brother." Little Sprout took the chicken leg, swallowed hard, but didn't start eating.
"You eat first," Big Bear said, and Little Bean Sprout started eating.
"Xiao Yi, here's a chicken leg for you." Xiao Yi was a little older than him, only five years old, and also in poor health. Xiao Yi didn't understand anything, and put it in his mouth to gnaw on.
"Chengcheng, have a chicken leg." Da Xiong gave Chengcheng another chicken leg. Chengcheng was seven years old and already very sensible. The remaining three chicken legs were given to Xiaocao, who was seven years old, Mutou, who was eight years old, and Maomao, who was taller but only four and a half years old. Finally, a large piece of chicken was given to Tietou, who was seven years old. When he wasn't home, Tietou was the one who looked after them.
This group of children were all rescued by Big Bear and Iron Head. Big Bear wasn't very old either, only eleven years old this year. Big Bear remembered that he was adopted by his master and made a living by the river. Once, during a rainstorm, the village was flooded, and a child named Iron Head floated down a wooden tray. His master said that Iron Head wasn't originally called Iron Head, but because this little boy, only two years old, loved to fight and headbutt people, he was named Iron Head. In the following years, there were floods every year, and the crops failed completely. They couldn't survive, so his master led them and a group of people to flee south. Later, they heard that there was a locust plague in the area they encountered, and they discussed eating children. So his master led them to separate and flee. Because his master always saved the food he found for the two of them to eat, he fell ill. In the end, only he and Iron Head were left to run around. Fortunately, his master taught him to fish and swim, and also taught him some martial arts, so he could defend himself. Perhaps the two brothers were tough, eating all sorts of random things without being picky, so they barely survived.
When Da Xiong was eight years old, he saved Mu Tou. The boy was quiet and reserved; he would eat whatever was given to him and could dress himself, but he never spoke. The two brothers had just gotten a bowl of leftover rice and were huddled in a corner eating when they saw the neatly dressed boy standing by the roadside. They waited until dark, but no one came to pick him up. Then came the next day, and the third day, but still no one came. Finally, as they were sharing a bun, Mu Tou, who hadn't eaten for three days, ran over and stretched out his dark paws to Da Xiong, saying, "Hungry!"
The bear stared at him in disbelief, while the wooden figure resolutely placed its paws in front of him and repeated, "Hungry!"
As if possessed, Big Bear placed the half-eaten steamed bun he had painstakingly begged for into his hand. Before Iron Head could even grab it, Wood shoved it into his mouth with lightning speed, nearly choking. After that, he followed them around, eating whatever they gave him without saying a word, doing whatever they were told, whether good or bad was another matter, he just did it.
Chengcheng, Xiaoyi, and Mao Mao met by a river last year when they were homeless. They were all looking for water. Da Xiong caught a big fish, and Mao Mao smelled it and couldn't bear to leave. Chengcheng came to find him, and when he saw the fish soup, he knelt down and begged Da Xiong to save Xiaoyi, who had a fever. Da Xiong had a soft heart and shared the fish soup with him, unexpectedly saving Xiaoyi's life. Chengcheng overheard at the nursing home that the three kids were going to be sold to brothels. Thinking that they were already starving and would be beaten in brothels, and since he had been rescued from a brothel by the soldiers, he decided to run away. He took the two kids and crawled through a dog hole to escape. Later, the three of them joined Da Xiong. Fortunately, Chengcheng was clever and learned to swim from him. With Tie Tou, they had three people to find food.
When Da Xiong and his five children were in Xiangyang City, they encountered Xiao Cao, who had sold herself to save her younger sister. However, Xiao Cao was not pretty and didn't seem to be in good health. Her two-year-old sister, Xiao Hua, couldn't be saved with a small amount of money, so no one paid any attention to her. Cheng Cheng, a kind-hearted man, found Xiao Cao carrying her sister behind a dilapidated temple that night. Using some methods he had learned at the orphanage, he gathered some herbs outside, boiled them, and gave the medicine to her. The next day, she seemed to be better, but unfortunately, the child's constitution was too weak, and she still passed away. Seeing how pitiful Xiao Cao was, Da Xiong and the children helped dig a hole, hastily buried Xiao Hua, and led everyone south.
Big Bear rescued Little Bean Sprout, who was half-dead, from the river in Linxia County. He couldn't remember how Little Bean Sprout fell into the river; he could only say that the child who survived was just lucky.
