Reborn in the Apocalypse: A Commoner's Survival Log
Chapter 99 Digging up a corpse in the snow
Seeing that everyone had almost finished eating, Zhou Yang was the first to put down his chopsticks.
"Now that the snow has stopped, should we go out and look for supplies? The base should be pretty short of them, and we're just sitting around doing nothing anyway."
Lu Xingye was the first to raise his hand in agreement: "Sure, I'm getting restless at the base too."
Chai Jin looked at Gu Yaoyao, who had finished eating early in the morning and was playing in the living room, and felt troubled.
"What about Yao Yao? How about we leave one of us to look after the house? Otherwise, it's quite troublesome to keep sending her to Uncle Gu's every time we go out. Anyway, we can all cook some home-style dishes now, so it should be enough for a day or two."
Yan Fei nodded: "Okay, then we'll take turns watching the house from now on. It'll get colder when the snow melts, and Yao Yao will easily get sick from going out so often, with the temperature fluctuating between hot and cold."
"So who's going to watch the house first this time?"
Zhou Yang thought everyone would decline, but Xu Zhiyi adjusted his glasses and was the first to step forward:
"I'll do it. I'll also learn how to take care of children first."
Zhou Yang: ? ? ?
The others, however, remained inscrutable and showed no surprise whatsoever.
Although Zhou Yang was curious, she didn't ask on the spot. It wasn't until that evening that she inquired with Shen Zechuan and learned that Xu Zhiyi had a crush on someone for many years, but that person was in the capital.
The next day, the group packed their things and left. Zhou Yang also left enough food for Xu Zhiyi in the refrigerator.
They first went to the service center to receive the task of searching for supplies, then rented sleds from the base, and only after obtaining the rental receipt did they go to the vicinity of the base gate.
The base's sleds are all parked near the gate and perimeter wall, and are looked after by the small team that takes turns guarding the base gate.
After showing the receipt to the soldier in charge of registration, the group got their sleds, tied Pea over securely, and then prepared to set off.
As for their target, the group had already discussed it before they came out: a mid-to-high-end residential area that was relatively far from here, where fewer people went, and they figured they could probably find something there.
Outside, everything was covered in white snow. Once outside the base, everyone lost their bearings and could only use the taller buildings to roughly locate themselves.
After driving and stopping frequently, we finally arrived at the mid-to-high-end residential area after more than half an hour.
Of course, now they couldn't even see the main gate anymore; they went directly to the base of those high-rise buildings.
To save time, they went in pairs and each searched a building.
Yan Fei and Lu Xingye formed one group, Zhou Yang and Shen Zechuan formed another, and Chai Jin brought Wandou along. To prevent the sled from getting lost, Zhou Yang also stored it in his spatial storage.
When Zhou Yang and his group entered the building, they found the house ransacked, with clothes and blankets scattered all over the floor, probably because they had left in a hurry.
The two searched all the rooms from bottom to top, but found very little food. Most of the food was either opened and difficult to take away or store, or homemade pickles and kimchi that were too heavy to carry, and then there were snacks like candy and preserved plums that couldn't fill their stomachs.
Fortunately, it was cold before, so many of them weren't spoiled. They weren't picky; they took everything as long as it wasn't broken.
However, they found quite a lot of cigarettes and alcohol, totaling several boxes, as well as various clothes, gold and silver jewelry, skincare products, daily necessities, and so on.
We did see quite a few zombies, but they were mostly corpses left behind by the military when they were searching for survivors and clearing the building.
This greatly reduced their burden and made the search for supplies much smoother.
Thanks to Zhou Yang's spatial ability, they quickly completed the search of this building and then hurriedly moved on to the next residential building.
The other two groups weren't so quick. The supplies from each floor had to be gathered in one place first, and then moved from top to bottom to the entrance, with Zhou Yang coming to collect them later.
So by the time Zhou Yang and his team returned after circling around, the other two groups had only just finished searching the two buildings.
Zhou Yang went over and took them all.
Although these things are scattered, they add up to a considerable amount of supplies.
After searching for supplies in the neighborhood, it was time to eat. The group found a random house, set up a pot inside, and started cooking.
It was too cold outside, and the food would get cold in no time after it came out of the pot, so Zhou Yang and the others made a homemade version of spicy hot pot with chicken broth.
Pour in the chicken broth prepared in advance, add various meatballs, meats, and vegetables, and cook together. Finally, add the noodles or rice noodles that you like, and drizzle with a sauce made primarily of sesame paste to finish.
There wasn't enough food in between, so Zhou Yang added more ingredients and staple food.
After finishing the big pot, everyone was stuffed, and even ate more peas than usual.
After finishing their meal, while the others were washing the pots, Zhou Yang stroked the pea's fur and whispered in its ear, instructing it to look for the place where zombies were buried under the snow when it went out later, and to call him when it found it.
The pea didn't understand why it needed to look for that thing, but since its owner said so, it would look for it.
It nuzzled Zhou Yang's chin, its tail swishing lightly.
After cleaning up the pots and pans, the group rested for a while before discussing where to go next.
They originally only planned to come here to do some searching, but they didn't expect to finish so quickly. Going back directly would be a bit of a waste, so they planned to go to another place in the afternoon to continue.
Shen Zechuan suggested, "How about we go to the city center? There's probably still a lot of stuff left there."
"Okay!" No one had any objections.
After packing their things, the group left the residential building.
Just as Zhou Yang was about to take out the sled, Pea went to the side, asking around and sniffing. Finally, it stopped in one spot and kept scratching the ground with its paws while chirping.
"What's wrong with Pea?" Shen Zechuan frowned as he watched Pea keep barking.
Zhou Yang scratched his ear: "Is there something down there? Or... should we dig it up and see?"
"Dig! Dig! Dig! What if there's treasure down there!"
Lu Xingye rubbed his hands together, eager to get started, and took the lead. Yan Fei had no choice but to hurry after him.
The others also went over.
Seeing Lu Xingye wearing gloves and digging in the snow, Yan Fei sighed and looked at Zhou Yang: "Do you have any tools to dig snow?"
“Yes.” Zhou Yang said and immediately threw out a few shovels and spades.
Yan Fei squatted down, picked up a small shovel and a spade, then walked over to Lu Xingye and handed him the shovel.
"Don't dig with your hands, you'll get frostbite. Take this instead."
"oh oh!"
Lu Xingye's eyes lit up when he saw the shovel, and he picked it up and continued shoveling the snow on the ground.
Others also picked up tools and stepped forward to help.
But the snow was too thick. Lu Xingye's legs went numb from squatting, and he had only managed to scrape off a layer of snow. He was so discouraged that he threw the shovel away.
"How long will this digging take?"
Zhou Yang also felt that this was too inefficient: "How about I try using my spatial abilities to move the snow from this small area?"
"You can try it."
Everyone agreed, and then took their tools and moved aside.
Zhou Yang walked to the spot where the peas had first dug the ground, and using that spot as the center, he roughly marked out an area with a diameter of 2 meters with a shovel before squatting down to try to collect the snow in that area.
In the blink of an eye, the snow he had dug out was gone, leaving only a deep hole, and he threw the dug-out snow aside.
Looking at the cave entrance, the group paused for a moment, then gathered around and looked down.
The hole was about five or six meters deep. It was too dark to see anything at the bottom, so I shone a flashlight at its highest power and discovered what looked like a frozen zombie lying there.
"Zombies?"
The zombies at the bottom of Yanfei Cave frowned, completely baffled as to why Wandou was digging this.
Chai Jin looked at the others and suggested, "Let's bring it up and take a look? What if this zombie is special?"
"Okay, but... how do we get it up here?"
"..." Everyone looked at the zombies below and was puzzled.
Although they all have superpowers, none of them are suitable for telekinesis; even Zhou Yang's space requires physical contact with objects.
In this situation, anyone with an earth elemental ability could resolve it in no time.
At this moment, Shen Zechuan volunteered to go down.
"I'll go down and tie it up; it should be frozen solid by now anyway."
Zhou Yang didn't stop him, but he added a few more words of advice: "Then be careful. The zombie is just frozen stiff, not unconscious. The first thing you should do when you go down is to stun it with electricity, and then tie it up."
Shen Zechuan nodded: "Okay."
So Zhou Yang took out two thick, long ropes, tied one around Shen Zechuan's body, and had him carry the other on his shoulder.
Please be careful.
"Don't worry." Shen Zechuan smiled at Zhou Yang, then turned and walked towards the cave entrance.
Zhou Yang, Chai Jin, and Lu Xingye helped him pull the rope from behind, lowering him down little by little.
Yan Fei, holding a throwing knife, kept a close eye on the situation below, ready to shoot the zombies at any moment.
