Reborn in the Apocalypse: A Commoner's Survival Log

Chapter 79 The Extreme Cold Has Arrived

In early October, which should have been the most comfortable time of the year, the weather was already so cold that people were shivering.

The extreme cold is drawing ever closer.

These past few days, the first thing Zhou Yang does every morning when she opens her eyes is to check the thermometer hanging by the balcony window to calculate the approximate time when the extreme cold will arrive.

Various heating devices were moved out of the space early on, with several placed in the bedroom in addition to the living room.

He had also used the remaining insulation from his storage space to create a layer of warmth for the house across the street. The vegetables in the planting boxes were also kept suspended with diluted spring water to prevent them from freezing to death one day.

As soon as he woke up that day, he found that the room had suddenly become very cold, and he knew that the extreme cold had arrived, so he immediately turned on the heater and small electric heater that were placed next to his bed.

Once the room felt a bit warmer, I got up, dressed, and ran to the balcony in the living room to check the thermometer.

The indoor temperature at that moment was exactly minus twenty degrees Celsius.

This is only because his house has good insulation; outdoors, it's probably close to -30 degrees Celsius.

He checked the room temperature before going to bed last night, and it was -3 degrees Celsius. He didn't expect that it would drop to -20 degrees Celsius after just one night's sleep. The temperature dropped by more than ten degrees overnight.

Looking outside, I realized that it had started snowing heavily, and the ground, rooftops, grass, and treetops were all covered with a thick layer of snow.

If this scene were set before the apocalypse, many of the southerners, who had never seen such heavy snow, would probably be very excited. But now, all that remains is deep worry and despair.

The sudden drop in temperature overnight caused many survivors at the base to freeze to death, most of whom were elderly people and children with poor health.

Especially the survivors living in refugee camps, who were woken up by the cold early in the morning, wanted to wake up their friends and family next to them, only to find that they had already frozen to death and their bodies were frozen into ice blocks.

In an instant, the cries and shouts of those who had lost loved ones filled several refugee camps. The sounds echoed continuously in the air above the base, making everyone who heard them feel distressed.

In the apocalypse, people couldn't afford funerals, so the base had to arrange for everyone to be cremated in an open space.

Even the ashes were put together in a huge communal urn, buried in a communal cemetery, and then everyone's names were engraved on a tombstone that was only one person tall, so that others could pay their respects.

After disposing of the bodies, the base immediately issued a notice to seek shelter from the cold, transferring survivors who could not find shelter on their own to the underground parking lot.

Then, just as Zhou Yang said, they closed the entrances and exits on both sides of the road and lit several bonfires inside to keep warm.

Zhou Yang naturally chose to spend the winter at home.

He had taken precautions against the cold during the renovation, so as long as he spent most of his time in his room with a few small heaters and a space heater on, plus the cold-resistant peas and yellow dog family as hand warmers, the extreme cold was not a big deal for him.

He lives at home alone with his pets, which is much more comfortable than living in a communal environment in an underground parking lot.

With so many people, not to mention the poor hygiene conditions, there are also quite a few people with extremely low moral character mixed in there.

It's common to wake up to find your belongings stolen, and you often can't find the thief because everyone you see could be a potential thief.

Even if you get the military officer in charge, it won't help; in the end, you can only grit your teeth and swallow your anger.

In his past life, during the coldest time of the year, he, like most people, went underground to seek shelter from the cold. He had only slept there for one night when all his belongings were stolen, leaving him not even a spare pair of underwear.

Later, he learned his lesson. When he received a free pancake from the base, he would eat the rest and hide it close to his body, making it difficult for others to steal.

Moreover, in such cold weather, people don't even want to go out to use the toilet. In order to keep the underground area as clean as possible, the base provided several old-fashioned chamber pots.

But among so many people, there are always a few scoundrels who like to urinate and defecate anywhere.

This caused the underground parking lot to become unbearably smelly within a few days. In the later stages of the extreme cold, one had to be careful where they stepped, as they might accidentally step on something unclean.

Zhou Yang felt nauseous just thinking about the days he slept on the ground in his previous life, and he almost couldn't eat his breakfast.

Shaking his head, he temporarily banished these memories, quickly finished his breakfast, and then hurried back to his room, this time bringing Pea and the Yellow family along as well.

Although the mutant animals may not be afraid of the cold, he is, so it would be good for them to create some heat for him.

However, before entering the room, Zhou Yang first took them to his space to take a bath, otherwise even Zhou Yang couldn't bring himself to use them as hand warmers.

Fortunately, the peas were already used to taking baths, and the weasels were natural swimmers and didn't mind water, so they happily let Zhou Yang scrub them until they smelled nice before he released them from the space.

Zhou Yang and his four pets were all snuggled up in his bed. Pea warmed the blankets, Big Yellow and his wife warmed their feet, Little Yellow warmed their hands, and there was even a small heater and a space heater blowing. Life couldn't be more comfortable.

Zhou Yang lay contentedly in bed, wondering how Shen Zechuan and the others were doing. It was a pity he didn't have a satellite phone to contact them.

However, remembering that he had already given a heads-up, he figured it shouldn't be a big problem, so he comfortably hugged Pea's neck and went back to sleep.

Sigh, I wonder when the base's local area network will be built. It's so inconvenient not being able to contact people by phone.

The heavy snow continued for the next few days, and the temperature continued to drop, eventually stabilizing at around -50 degrees Celsius.

During this period, several more families who had not yet moved underground had people freeze to death. In the end, unable to bear it any longer, they moved their belongings to the underground parking lot to escape the cold.

On the third day of the snowfall, Zhou Yang's family lost their water supply. All the water pipes and the water tank must have frozen solid.

He estimated that the entire base was in a similar situation, and that if they needed water, they would have to rely on boiling snow or having water-type ability users release water.

He had just discovered the water was cut off when Shen Zechuan and the others, worried about Zhou Yang, came straight to his door.

Upon entering, Lu Xingye was surprised to find that Zhou Yang's house was much warmer than the outside, with a temperature difference of at least twenty degrees Celsius.

"Yangyang, your house is so warm! Why don't I move in with you? The water's cut off right now, but I can let you use the water as rent!"

As soon as Lu Xingye entered, he hugged Zhou Yang's shoulder and started to act coquettishly. Unfortunately, before he could get Zhou Yang to agree, Yan Fei grabbed him by the back of the neck and pulled him back. The icy hand made him shiver, and he kicked Yan Fei in the back.

"Yan Fei, are you out of your mind?! You're putting such cold hands on my neck, are you trying to freeze me to death?!"

Yan Fei's eyes darkened: "Can you change your habit of casually touching people? You just came in from outside and you're already throwing yourself at people with that chilling aura?"

Lu Xingye looked completely bewildered: "???"

No, how could he just randomly lay hands on people? Is this person seriously ill?

"Hmph, I can't be bothered with you!"

Lu Xingye glared fiercely at Yan Fei, then ran to the side to hug Wandou and reminisce.

Yan Fei was left standing there, staring at Lu Xingye's back with a mixture of embarrassment and frustration.

Zhou Yang watched this scene thoughtfully. He seemed to often see the two of them arguing like this. Was there something going on?

Yan Fei looks like he's jealous, but unfortunately Lu Xingye doesn't seem to get it at all.
