Reborn in the Apocalypse: A Commoner's Survival Log
Chapter 61 Trouble is coming
The high temperatures continue, and the solar power system erected at the base can only provide daily lighting and maybe a fan. Don't even think about using high-power appliances like air conditioners or elevators.
However, fearing that too many people would get heatstroke, the army set up a tent of the largest size in the open space of each community, which could accommodate thousands of people. The outside was covered with a heat insulation layer, and several water air conditioners were placed inside. Ice-type ability users were also asked to put out a few basins of ice every few hours to provide residents of each community with shelter from the heat during the day.
Of course, these tents can only keep the temperature around 30 degrees Celsius, and with many people staying there, it inevitably becomes smoky and unpleasant.
So some people, not believing in such superstitions, insisted on turning on the air conditioner to try it out, but it would usually trip the circuit breaker within minutes of being turned on, and they would eventually have to give up.
One apartment in the neighboring community had its lights on, but it caught fire in less than ten minutes due to overheating wiring. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished in time, preventing a major disaster, but it did cause wiring problems for the entire building.
The neighbors immediately reported it, and the army sent people to dismantle and take away the air conditioner from this household.
To prevent such incidents from happening again, the base took the opportunity to thoroughly clean up all the houses with air conditioning. Except for a few houses that were able to generate their own electricity to run their air conditioning, all the others were demolished and refused to be returned.
As a result, the few households in the base that had generators and could run air conditioners were targeted.
Many people approached the military requesting that the authorities intervene and have these companies contribute their generators for everyone's use. The military flatly refused, stating that the generators were private property and the base had no authority over them; anyone else wanting generators should find their own.
Seeing that the base wouldn't take care of them, these people went to people who had generators on their own.
Zhou Yang was naturally one of the families targeted, and because they knew he lived alone, even more people came. Every evening, his door was surrounded by people who were either knocking or shouting.
He was quite impressed. In temperatures that were already 45 degrees Celsius, they climbed eighteen floors, with dozens or even hundreds of people crowding the stairwell. Weren't they afraid of dying from the heat and suffocation?
Fortunately, his house was well soundproofed, so he couldn't hear a few words of what these people were saying outside, no matter how loudly they shouted.
He even turned off the doorbell.
They ignored everything happening outside their window and focused solely on staying at home.
After enduring this for three days, seeing that Zhou Yang was unyielding, these people began to use various tools to break down doors and walls.
Are they planning to force their way in? How can we tolerate this?
Zhou Yang took out a crossbow, filled the small box with arrows, and then opened the door with Pea.
Since the army brought back the survivors, Zhou Yang has never taken Wandou out again. Firstly, it's too hot outside, and he doesn't want Wandou to suffer with him. Secondly, he wants Wandou to watch the house in case someone breaks in while they're not home. Thirdly, he wants to keep a trump card up his sleeve, which is exactly what he needs in today's situation.
So these newly arrived survivors naturally had no idea that they were raising a mutated dog.
As soon as you open the door, a blast of cold air rushes out, creating a stark contrast to the outside temperature, which is well over 45 degrees Celsius.
The middle-aged man leading the charge, who was chopping down the door with an axe, thought his intimidation had worked and was about to excitedly squeeze inside when he looked up and saw a gleaming iron arrowhead pointed at his head.
Just as he was about to yell a curse, he saw a huge dog's head stick out from the side, staring fiercely at the man. Its scarlet tongue swept between several sharp teeth, as if he was hesitating about where to bite the man.
The man immediately broke out in a cold sweat, his body stiffened and he dared not move. The foot that had stepped into Zhou Yang's house was slowly withdrawn.
Zhou Yang glanced at the man with disdain: "Didn't you want to come in? You can come in and try, and see if your feet are faster than my crossbow bolt."
"Pshaw! Who are you trying to scare! You're just a scrawny kid who hasn't even grown his hair yet, and you dare to kill someone?" The middle-aged man took a while to come to his senses, then forced himself to remain calm and looked at Zhou Yang with a sarcastic expression. He clearly didn't believe that this fair-skinned and thin young man would dare to kill someone.
Zhou Yang didn't know what to say about this person. If it were him in his previous life when he first faced the apocalypse, he might not have dared to do so, but now that he had experienced three years of the apocalypse and witnessed how ugly humanity could be, Zhou Yang was really quite daring.
Without hesitation, he aimed directly at the man's left chest, bypassing his heart, and fired an arrow.
With a "whoosh," the sharp arrow pierced through the man's shoulder blade, killing him instantly.
Before the man could even react, before the pain even reached his brain, he saw blood gushing from his chest. Terrified, he collapsed onto the middle-aged woman behind him, screaming repeatedly, "Ah! Murder! This person has murdered me! Help me! I don't want to die!"
Zhou Yang rolled her eyes at the man and said speechlessly, "If you hurry up and have someone take you to the base hospital to see a doctor for treatment, you can still live. But if you continue to waste your time and energy here, you might really die."
Upon hearing this, the man immediately tugged at the clothes of the elderly people nearby, begging them to take him to the base hospital. Hearing this, the elderly people who had been so concerned about him just moments before vanished without a trace. The normally crowded hallway was suddenly cleared out for the man.
"Pfft, it seems you've failed miserably at being the first to stick your neck out. I think you should just crawl there yourself, lest you lose too much blood and won't even have the strength to crawl." Zhou Yang kindly offered the man some advice.
The middle-aged man glanced at the group of people who had come with him, and his heart sank. He then glared at Zhou Yang before silently getting up and staggering toward the stairwell.
After the man left, the others gathered around again. This time, the first person standing in front of Zhou Yang was a shrewish middle-aged woman. She looked somewhat familiar; she seemed to be the one who had just moved into the second-floor apartment in their building.
“Young man, we’re all neighbors. Life is so hard these days, we need to help each other out. It’s a waste for you to run the air conditioner all by yourself, so please let us in to cool off. Don’t worry, we’ll bring our own food and water, it won’t bother you. We can even give you supplies as payment for the air conditioner. I have some dog toys, you have them all! But if we come, could we please leave the dog outside? It’s such a big dog, we’re scared, we’re old and our hearts aren’t very strong.”
"That's right! We won't stay for nothing, we'll give you something in return. How about a cell phone? It's the latest model Apple that my son just bought before the apocalypse."
"This dog is too big and not safe. It's better to leave it outside. Anyway, I've heard that cats and dogs these days don't die from the sun or the heat."
"I also have a laptop at home, it's practically brand new, young man, do you want it?"
"Mmm, I still have some..."
Several elderly men and women chimed in, offering a variety of suggestions, but all shared one thing in common: nothing was practical, just useless junk. They even considered kicking the peas out—what kind of serious illness was that?
Zhou Yang was so angry he laughed.
"You're all ugly, but you think you're so great! You bring me useless stuff hoping to freeload off the air conditioning, do you think I'm a junk collector? You even want to kick my dog out to make room for you? Do you think I'm stupid? Let me tell you, your lives are in my hands, less valuable than my dog! Get out of here, all of you!"
The older woman at the front of the line immediately objected: "Young man, how can you talk like that! Don't you understand respecting the elderly and caring for the young? We are all your elders, you should show them respect! And how can dogs be compared to people? They are just worthless creatures!"
Zhou Yang couldn't hold back any longer and cursed, "I respect your mother! Pea insulted you, bite her!"
Pea had long understood that the two-legged creatures outside were trying to kick it out and were still cursing at it. But it had been obedient and quiet until its owner spoke. Now that it heard Zhou Yang speak, it got up and started barking wildly at the outside.
The enormous sound waves and fierce appearance nearly scared the elderly people in the front row half to death, causing them to retreat a considerable distance in a flash, clearing a small space at the entrance.
The older woman who had been at the front of the line quietly squeezed behind others before daring to raise her neck and continue shouting: "Let me tell you, murder is illegal! There are troops stationed here! There are soldiers patrolling down here! Don't do anything reckless! If you dare to do anything reckless, we'll go and find the army to settle this, and you'll be shot!"
Oh, this has even involved the military.
Zhou Yang scoffed, completely unconcerned.
"Oh, then go find her! Ma'am, get this straight, you're the ones who came looking for trouble with me. I was just defending myself. Even if I killed you right now, the base would only fine me some food and supplies. Do you think your life is worth anything right now?"
Upon hearing this, the woman took another half step back, her voice trembling as she spoke: "You...you're talking nonsense! How could the army ignore the lives of ordinary people!"
"Oh, so the people the army killed before were civilians? If you don't believe me, you can try and see if I dare to shoot you dead with an arrow. And whether the army will go to war because of you. But you definitely won't see that."
Zhou Yang smiled and then aimed the crossbow bolt at the old woman's forehead again.
