Reborn in the Apocalypse: A Commoner's Survival Log
Chapter 319 Extra - Yan Fei & Lu Xingye (2)
Although there are differences in dismissal times between different grades, and Lu Xingye is two grades lower than the others, belonging to the group that gets out of school the earliest, he will wait for the four of them to leave school together as long as he has nothing to do.
At first, Lu Xingye's older brother, Lu Yanwen, was quite worried when he learned that his younger brother was hanging out with four older students all the time.
After inquiring around, he discovered that the group consisted of well-off students from good families, which relieved him. In addition, he was busy with his own college entrance exams, and his younger brother was becoming less and less willing to play with him, so he simply let him be.
These carefree and joyful days continued until Lu Xingye entered junior high school and became a freshman.
It was an ordinary Friday.
Lu Xingye's parents had just told the two brothers that morning that they planned to go out for some time alone and celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Lu Xingye had no objection to this, and was even happy that no one could control him anymore.
Since my older brother went to university, he has basically lived on campus for convenience. When my parents go out, only the housekeeper, Uncle Li, is left at home. In other words, no one cares if he comes home late at night or plays games all night.
He was happy about this all day.
When school was over, he dragged Yan Fei and a few others to eat more than a dozen skewers of fried starch sausages that they had been forbidden to eat since childhood, and they even made a pact to have a final battle all night.
But after all the starch sausages were eaten, and Yan Fei's drivers and several others came to pick everyone up, Uncle Li was still nowhere to be seen.
After Yan Fei and the others were all picked up, he called Uncle Li, but the line was constantly busy and he couldn't get through.
Lu Xingye put down his phone and frowned.
Uncle Li is always very punctual. He arrives at the school gate about 10 minutes early every day and waits there. Occasionally he is late, but only by a few minutes. He has never been late as long as he is today.
However, Lu Xingye didn't take it seriously, assuming that Uncle Li had something come up temporarily and didn't think much of it, and quietly stood and waited for a long time.
However, after all the other students at the school gate had been picked up, Lu Xingye still hadn't received a call back from Uncle Li, so he had to call Uncle Li again.
It rang for a long time before I finally got through.
"Hey, Uncle Li, when are you coming to pick me up?"
Uncle Li on the other end paused, his voice sounding slightly tired: "I'm sorry, Xiao Ye, Uncle Li is still busy outside and can't leave for the time being. Why don't you take a taxi home today? By the way, do you have enough money on you? Uncle Li will transfer some money to your Green Credit account first."
"No need, Uncle Li. I don't have much cash on me, but I have a few thousand yuan in my WeChat account." Lu Xingye refused directly and then walked to the roadside to hail a taxi.
"Okay. Then take a taxi home first. Uncle Li probably won't be home until very late, but the cleaning lady should have prepared dinner. Remember to eat well."
Uncle Li on the other side continued to give instructions with concern.
Lu Xingye agreed, and only after seeing a taxi stop in front of him did he hang up the phone with Uncle Li.
"Okay, I got it! Uncle Li, you go ahead with your work, I've got a taxi."
Once in the car, Lu Xingye gave the driver the address.
It was half an hour later when I got home.
Upon entering, I found that no one was home. In addition, since it was past the beginning of winter, it got dark quickly, and the whole house was dark and deserted.
Looking at the deserted villa, Lu Xingye felt a strange sense of unease.
He scratched his head, threw his backpack on the sofa, went to the kitchen to wash his hands, and then turned and went to the dining room.
On the table was the dinner that Auntie had prepared for him and Uncle Li before she left, a meal for two.
Because it's placed on a temperature-controlled mat, it's still warm.
Lu Xingye wasn't picky, and since it was well past mealtime, he was starving. He sat down and started eating quickly, finishing two large bowls of rice in no time.
After quickly tidying up his own dishes and putting Uncle Li's portion back on the heated mat, Lu Xingye picked up his schoolbag and went upstairs.
Since it was Friday, I didn't think about doing my homework after returning to my room. I threw my schoolbag in the corner, went straight to my computer, sent an online reminder to the group, and then turned on the computer to play games.
Once Yan Fei and the others logged on, they started forming a group to run dungeons.
Five people made up a team, and they caught up on all the lessons they had missed this week, and also completed the new events. It was already past 11 p.m.
Having some free time, Lu Xingye felt a bit thirsty and hungry, so he said goodbye to Yan Fei and the others, then went out of his room and downstairs to get himself something to eat and drink.
After going down a few flights of stairs, I saw that the living room light was on.
Thinking that it must be Uncle Li who had returned, she went downstairs with light steps.
As soon as I reached the living room entrance, I saw Uncle Li sitting silently on the sofa opposite me, a cigarette in his hand, but he didn't smoke a single puff until it burned his hand.
Lu Xingye had never seen Uncle Li look so dejected. Just as he was about to ask what was wrong, he heard his elder brother's voice coming from across the room.
"Uncle Li, I want to tell Xiao Ye about this later. He's still young, and I'm afraid he won't be able to handle it."
Uncle Li stubbed out his cigarette and wiped his face with his hands: "It's no use hiding it now; he'll have to attend the funeral eventually..."
Lu Xingye, who was listening from behind, was puzzled, especially since it was related to him, so he couldn't help but walk over.
"Brother, what happened? Why do I have to attend a funeral?"
Upon hearing Lu Xingye's voice, Uncle Li and Lu Yanwen were both startled and immediately turned to look at him, but neither of them spoke.
It was only then that Lu Xingye noticed that Uncle Li and his elder brother's eyes were red, clearly indicating that they had been crying, and their expressions were a mixture of shock and dejection. He also noticed that there were some bloodstains on his elder brother's white shirt.
Why aren't you all saying anything? What's wrong?
Seeing that neither of them spoke, the inexplicable palpitation he had felt earlier surged back into his heart, and Lu Xingye couldn't help but have an ominous premonition.
Lu Yanwen hesitated for a long time, but finally pulled his younger brother to sit down next to him and chose not to hide anything: "Xiao Ye, I have something to tell you now."
“Oh, go ahead.” Lu Xingye nodded.
Lu Yanwen wiped his face: "My parents... were in a car accident on the way and couldn't be saved. They... passed away together."
"No... Brother, are you kidding me?"
Lu Xingye's first reaction was disbelief, but when he turned to look at his older brother and Uncle Li, he found no sign of them joking, and his heart sank.
Although he was sometimes disobedient and often secretly wished he didn't have his parents to discipline him, he never thought that one day he would really be without his parents.
As she thought about it, tears welled up in her eyes, and she couldn't hold back any longer, so she hugged her brother and cried her heart out.
Later, in a daze, I couldn't even remember how I got back to my room. When I came to my senses, I was already lying in bed. The lights and computer in the room had been turned off, and only the phone next to me was flashing from time to time.
He stared at the dark roof with his eyes open, his mind flashing back to his older brother's words and the moments he shared with his parents. Tears welled up in his eyes again.
……
On the other side, Yan Fei and the others, who were waiting for Lu Xingye to return, found that the kid had logged off without saying a word. At first, they thought his computer had crashed, and none of them took it seriously, since this kind of thing had happened before.
But this time, after waiting for more than ten minutes, no one came online, so several people tagged him in the group to ask.
However, all the messages disappeared without a trace.
Finally, Yan Fei was the first to realize something was wrong and called Lu Xingye.
The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.
The silence on the other end made Yan Fei's heart skip a beat.
This kid is usually like a monkey; he's never this quiet before.
Thinking this, Yan Fei became even more certain that something must have happened to Lu Xingye, so he frowned and asked, "What's wrong? Are you suddenly feeling unwell?"
"No."
After a long pause, the other person finally uttered two words.
The slightly hoarse sob was not pleasant to hear at all, but it felt like a hammer blow to Yan Fei's heart, making him feel heartache immediately.
He was the youngest in his family and always envied his classmates who had younger siblings following them around. Unfortunately, his parents had no plans to have any more children. For the past few years, Lu Xingye had been following him around like a little brother.
Although Yan Fei doesn't usually smile at Lu Xingye much and will criticize him when he makes a mistake, he really dotes on him like a younger brother, giving him whatever he asks for as long as it's not outrageous.
Now this little brother of mine is crying, and he's even cried his voice out, which has really worried Yan Fei.
Despite his anxiety, Yan Fei tried to soften his voice: "What happened? Tell me, okay? Otherwise, we're all worried about you."
There was no response for a long time on the other end of the phone, and Yan Fei did not urge him.
After a long silence, Lu Xingye finally managed to utter half a sentence: "Brother Yan, I don't have a mom and dad anymore..."
Then, all that could be heard on the phone was Lu Xingye's sobbing.
Yan Fei opened and closed his mouth several times, but ultimately did not make a sound to disturb him.
Crying is a way to release emotions in such situations.
After an unknown amount of time, Lu Xingye finally cried herself to sleep. Hearing the sobbing gradually subside on the other end, Yan Fei said softly, "Don't overthink it. Get some sleep. I'll come find you tomorrow. I won't hang up; I'll stay with you."
On the other end of the phone, Lu Xingye gave a soft "hmm," and then, perhaps from crying himself to sleep, his sobs grew softer and softer.
Yan Fei didn't hang up the phone; the call continued until she could faintly hear steady breathing and snoring from the other end before she finally felt relieved.
I set an alarm for myself and then went to sleep.
The next day, just as dawn broke, Yan Fei told his family what was going on and hurriedly left home.
Thinking that she wasn't very good at comforting people, she called Shen Zechuan and the other two along.
When the four arrived at the Lu family villa, the house was already packed with people.
Some were relatives of the Lu family who rushed over upon hearing the news, as well as management personnel from the Lu family's company.
Lu Yanwen and the butler, Uncle Li, were busy dealing with these people. When they saw Yan Fei and the others rushing over, they assumed that Lu Xingye had invited them to keep him company. They simply nodded to the group and let them go upstairs.
Yan Fei and the others had been here before, and they found Lu Xingye's room as if they knew the way well.
Inside, Lu Xingye had just woken up and was still in a daze when he heard the knocking. He casually called out, "Come in," and was quite surprised to see that it was Yan Fei and the other three who entered.
"Why are you here?"
Looking at Lu Xingye's somewhat red and swollen eyes, everyone could tell that he had been crying quite a bit.
"You didn't reply to my messages? With something this big happening, of course we have to come and keep you company, you wild boy. We're afraid you might do something rash or even commit suicide."
Being boys, Yan Fei and the others couldn't offer the delicate and gentle words of comfort, so they could only try to steer the conversation in a lighter tone.
Chai Jin rushed over and pinched Lu Xingye's still chubby cheeks.
"Hey, you know what, our little Yezi's face is so white, and as smooth as a piece of soft tofu. Plus those red eyes, she looks just like an adorable little white rabbit."
"Ouch!" Lu Xingye's eyes widened, and he bit Chai Jin's hand, which Chai Jin barely managed to dodge.
"You're the little white rabbit! Your whole family are little white rabbits!"
Hearing Lu Xingye's confident voice, which was still hoarse but much better than the one he heard last night, Yan Fei finally breathed a sigh of relief.
With the banter and jokes of the group, Lu Xingye was able to recover somewhat from the grief of his parents' sudden death.
For a period of time afterward, Lu Xingye spent his time with Yan Fei and the other three.
With Yan Fei and the others by his side, Lu Xingye did indeed recover quickly. He hadn't cried since his parents' funeral, and a smile gradually returned to his face.
However, it wasn't long before Yan Fei and the others noticed the difference.
Lu Xingye used to be truly carefree, but now he's trying hard to make himself happy so that his older brother Lu, Uncle Li, and the others won't worry about him.
However, things always take time, so Yan Fei and the others didn't pay much attention to it.
After the funeral, Lu Yanwen juggled his studies with managing the company his parents had left behind, often sleeping only five or six hours a night. Later, to help his older brother, Uncle Li also joined the company.
Both of them were so busy that they couldn't keep their feet on the ground and didn't have time to pay attention to Lu Xingye, but seeing that Yan Fei and the others were accompanying their little brother, they felt much more at ease.
So neither of them noticed that Lu Xingye, who was all smiles at them during the day, became quiet and unresponsive when alone. After returning home, even his favorite games were no longer popular, and he often didn't wake up until dawn.
This situation continued until the final exams at the end of the first year of junior high school.
That day, Yan Fei, who was supposed to be on holiday after the entrance exam, came to school because he needed to help the teacher organize some things, and didn't finish until the afternoon before going home.
On his way back, he looked around at the scenery with boredom. Suddenly, he saw a familiar figure sitting on a stone slab by the city moat, lost in thought.
Yan Fei recognized Lu Xingye's back at a glance and hurriedly told the driver to stop the car. He then ran over to him.
As soon as he got closer, he saw Lu Xingye staring blankly at the river, his face showing a lonely and numb expression. His lifeless appearance immediately made his heart ache.
He walked over, patted Lu Xingye's head, and asked softly, "School's over, why aren't you going home?"
Lu Xingye noticed the hand above his head and heard Yan Fei's voice. Only then did he come to his senses. The tears he had been holding back for so long finally flowed down his cheeks.
"I don't want to go home. It's too quiet there, so quiet it's scary. I can't sleep at all."
"Then don't go home, come to my place, and sleep with me tonight?"
Yan Fei directly hugged his wild younger brother into his arms, letting the other's tears soak his shirt.
After Lu Xingye had cried her heart out, Yan Fei took her back to his home.
Because his parents and eldest brother were all busy and not at home, and his second brother, who was the only one at home who was not busy, had recently gone on a trip with his classmates, Yan Fei did not need to inform anyone.
After dinner, Yan Fei first took Lu Xingye out for a walk, and then took Lu Xingye to play a live-action CF game.
After exhausting Lu Xingye's energy, they took him home.
Although the Yan family did have guest rooms, Yan Fei was worried that Lu Xingye would stay up all night again, so he let Lu Xingye sleep with him.
Having moved to a different place, Lu Xingye was somewhat unfamiliar with sleeping in unfamiliar beds.
So Yan Fei sang him a lullaby.
Yan Fei had already passed puberty, and his voice was somewhat deep. Paired with a gentle lullaby, it was soothing and calming that Lu Xingye soon became sleepy.
Yan Fei sang it on repeat countless times until Lu Xingye rolled over and bumped into his arms, at which point he stopped singing.
Being held and slept by someone of the same sex would normally make Yan Fei disgusted enough to kick the person out, but now that the person is Lu Xingye, Yan Fei finds that he is not so repulsed after all, and even feels a little happy.
At that time, Yan Fei didn't think much about it and simply thought that he was just feeling sorry for his younger brother. It wasn't until many years later that he realized that he had already fallen in love with his younger brother without realizing it.
