Reborn in the Apocalypse: A Commoner's Survival Log
Chapter 137 Sheep in the Cellar
After cursing, Zhou Yang and the others sneaked into the air-raid shelter.
After walking a few steps, I came across a gatekeeper dozing off at the corner.
Yan Fei killed his opponent with a single flick of his wrist.
After navigating through numerous twists and turns, the group finally found the villagers gathered together in a slightly larger space.
One of the men, around sixty years old, sat upright, looking every bit like a leader.
The man was speaking, and everyone else was listening attentively.
Zhou Yang and the others exchanged glances. Instead of rushing in, they hid in the shadows and eavesdropped.
"Brother! Village Chief! When are we going to kill those beasts? I want revenge for my son!" Aunt Zhang couldn't hold back any longer and shouted.
"Third brother's wife, what's the rush? Look at how many families have lost their sons?"
“They have other sons who can take care of them in their old age, but my husband and I only have this one son! How am I going to live?”
"Alright, alright. Didn't Dashan just find a wife who's pregnant? Don't come along later. Take care of your wife. What do you say, Third Brother?"
"Yes, yes, eldest brother is right." The third brother, who was called out, nodded obsequiously, not daring to refute at all.
Aunt Zhang glared at Zhang Laosan and then fell silent.
"Alright, that's settled then. Men whose names are called, grab your weapons and come with me. The rest of you, keep an eye on the house, and remember to feed the sheep in the cellar behind the mountain. Oh, and check on the ewes again. If you find any that are pregnant, separate them and keep them in one place. Don't accidentally kill another lamb."
Once the village chief gave the order, everyone else had no choice but to obey and immediately nodded in agreement.
Seeing that they were about to come out, Zhou Yang and the others stopped hiding and went out directly.
"You don't need to come looking for us, we're already here."
Seeing the group of people swaggering in, Uncle Zhang's face suddenly turned ferocious: "How did you get in? Where's A-Xiang?!"
Lu Xingye immediately rolled his eyes: "Are you blind? Of course he walked in. As for the person you're talking about, if you mean the one guarding the entrance, he's dead."
"You!" Uncle Zhang's face twisted in pain. "I'm going to kill you!"
"Tsk, you were quite calm when you heard about someone else's dead child, why are you so agitated now? Oh, was that your son who died?" Lu Xingye suddenly realized what was going on, clicking his tongue in amazement, "Sure enough, people's hearts are always biased..."
"What nonsense are you talking about!"
Uncle Zhang was struck where it hurt, and his anger flared up. He raised his hand and flung out a pea vine, heading straight for Lu Xingye.
Unfortunately, before it could even struggle twice, Yan Fei chopped it in half with a single stroke.
"Oh, you're angry? Looks like it really is your son! Sigh, that Xiang guy looks like he's not even 18 yet, while you're over 60. You were quite the vigorous old man back then!" Lu Xingye said, making a face before hiding behind Yan Fei.
Uncle Zhang was furious, but with Yan Fei and Shen Zechuan in front, he couldn't catch Lu Xingye behind him at all.
The other villagers started whispering among themselves after hearing Lu Xingye's words.
"Isn't A Xiang the widowed wife of Li's fourth son? Isn't A Xiang his posthumous child? My God, Li's fourth son died with a cuckold's hat on him!"
"Sigh, I've seen Li Laosi's wife going in and out of the village chief's house before, but I didn't think much of it at the time. I never imagined they'd been having an affair for so long..."
"Sigh, it's all Aunt Zhang's fault. She's never had a child her whole life. No wonder Uncle Zhang has to go out and cheat on her."
"..."
Aunt Zhang, who had been bullied by Uncle Zhang before, sneered, "I was wondering why A-Xiang never had to go out to find goods or do any hard work. It turns out the eldest brother is biased towards his own son!"
"Hmph, you still refuse to let me avenge my son, you deserve to lose your son too! Bah!"
"Shut up!" Uncle Zhang, enraged, lashed out with the vine, striking Aunt Zhang and leaving several deep welts on her body.
Aunt Zhang, with her fiery temper, was not about to give up. She immediately grabbed a kitchen knife and was about to chop at Uncle Zhang, but before she could get close, Uncle Zhang's vine pierced right through her chest, right in front of her heart.
Seeing that someone had died, everyone else in the village immediately quieted down and dared not say anything more to Uncle Zhang.
Seeing that the situation had calmed down, Uncle Zhang once again turned his attention to Zhou Yang and the others.
"Attack them all! Kill them all! We'll have a whole roasted lamb feast tonight and tomorrow!"
The villagers echoed their agreement, and several of them swallowed hard, grabbed their weapons, and rushed forward.
Zhou Yang and the others rolled their eyes in unison, then each of them was killed with a single slash.
After dealing with everyone, they discovered that the so-called village chief had long since disappeared.
"Damn! That old bastard ran pretty fast."
"They must have hidden somewhere. They couldn't have gone far in just a few minutes. Let's look for them."
The group searched the air-raid shelter, but still couldn't find him.
At this moment, Zhou Yang remembered that the old man had mentioned a cellar in the back mountain, so he said, "Didn't the old man say there was a cellar in the back mountain where sheep were raised? Let's go take a look, maybe it's too far inside."
"They raise sheep?" Lu Xingye was full of questions, then remembered the people who ate people, and immediately had a bad feeling, "Could these sheep be referring to..."
Zhou Yang sighed: "Most likely they are two-legged sheep, that is... people."
"Damn it..." Lu Xingye and Chai Jin cursed in unison.
The group followed the air-raid shelter to the other end of the exit, and after some searching, they finally found an underground entrance.
They opened the top iron plate and went down the ladder. The underground was pitch black, with no light at all, and they could only hear some faint noises from time to time.
Zhou Yang quickly took out several lights and distributed them to the others, then broke off several large glow sticks and threw them towards the source of the noise.
Only then could everyone see the general situation underground.
There were several cages inside, most of which were empty, but three of them were used to imprison people.
One cell was used to lock up boys in their teens and twenties, another was used to lock up girls of similar age, and the last one was used to lock up children under 10 years old.
"These damn bastards! It's too easy for them to die like this!"
"Let's get them out of here first! And while we're at it, let's see if the old man is hiding here."
Yan Fei strode to the three cages and unlocked all the chains on them.
Upon hearing the noise, the locked-up girls and children all retreated to the base of the wall, then huddled together in a ball.
Only a few boys tried to remain calm, looking at the strangers.
However, suspecting they might be in cahoots with the villagers, one of the boys stepped forward and said, "If you want to eat me, don't eat those other children."
The boy spoke with a stern voice, but his trembling hands, clasped tightly together, betrayed his fear.
Upon seeing this, Lu Xingye burst out laughing: "Pfft, we don't eat people, thank you! Alright, don't be afraid, we're here to rescue you. We killed all the cannibalistic villagers up there, but that old bastard village chief escaped. Did you see him come in?"
The boy breathed a sigh of relief, then remembered the sounds he had heard earlier and quickly pointed to the shadows behind the group: "Before you came down, I heard someone come in, and it sounded like they were going over there."
The group immediately turned to look, and several vines suddenly shot out from the darkness and rushed towards them, only to be burned to ashes by Xu Zhiyi.
Zhou Yang immediately released Xiao Hu, whose wrist-thick vines rushed into the darkness and tied up the village chief who was hiding in the shadows.
Just as he was about to instruct Xiao Hu to riddle the person with holes, the boy behind him called out to him.
"This person...can I kill him? I want to avenge my parents!"
