The crackdown on organized crime began with the arrest of the mother-in-law.

After murdering Zhang Baocang, Qin Kailai, fearing exposure, decided to dismember and dispose of the body. He dragged Zhang Baocang's corpse into his car and took it back to his residence. In the bathroom of his residence, Qin Kailai used a kitchen knife to dismember Zhang Baocang's body into six pieces, then wrapped the remains in white plastic bags and put them into a black leather suitcase. To cover up his crime, Qin Kailai drove to Nanhu Square in the early morning, dragged the suitcase into the square, threw it into the central lake, and then fled the scene in his car.

Qin Kailai also confessed that he resigned because of gambling debts, which made it difficult for him to concentrate on his work. He was also worried that his colleagues would discover his gambling activities. He originally thought that after dismembering and disposing of the body, it would be difficult for the police to trace him back to him, but he did not expect that the police would quickly identify him as a suspect.

After the interrogation, Qin Kailai signed and fingerprinted the interrogation record, confessing to his crime. Xiao Wang and Xiao Zhou in the monitoring room breathed a sigh of relief, their faces showing tired but relieved smiles. After several days of arduous investigation, this heinous case of a dismembered body found in a floating suitcase at Nanhu Square was finally solved. The suspect, Qin Kailai, was arrested according to law and will face severe punishment.

Three days after Qin Kailai truthfully confessed to the crime, in accordance with the case investigation procedures, the Municipal Criminal Investigation Detachment arranged for eight investigators to escort Qin Kailai to Nanhu Square and related crime scenes for on-site identification. To ensure the smooth conduct of the identification work, the police implemented temporary control measures in advance around the central lake of Nanhu Square, Qin Kailai's residence, and along the route where the body was disposed of, setting up a cordon area and simultaneously assigning personnel to record and photograph the entire identification process, securing all relevant evidence.

At approximately 9:00 AM, a police car carrying Qin Kailai arrived at the north entrance of Nanhu Square. Qin Kailai, dressed in prison garb and handcuffed, was escorted out of the car by two detectives. Nanhu Square had returned to its usual tranquility, but traces of the investigation were still faintly visible within the cordon. The surface of the central lake remained calm, as if the shadow of that heinous crime had long since faded. As soon as Qin Kailai stepped out of the car, his gaze involuntarily drifted towards the central lake, his body trembling slightly, his expression revealing an undisguised panic.

"Qin Kailai, look closely at this spot. Is this where you disposed of the body?" Detective Lao Chen, in charge of the identification, spoke first, his tone serious. Qin Kailai nodded slowly, his voice hoarse as he replied, "Yes... this is it. I threw the suitcase containing... Zhang Baocang's body, into the lake." Then, escorted by the detectives, he walked step by step towards the waterfront platform on the north side of the lake—the very location where the police had previously discovered the black suitcase.

Standing on the edge of the waterfront platform, Qin Kailai pointed to the area near the eastern side of the platform and explained in detail: "Around 4 a.m. that day, I drove to the west entrance of the plaza, parked the car on the roadside, and then dragged the black leather suitcase in from the west entrance, walking along the path next to the fitness equipment area to this spot. It was very foggy at the time, and visibility was very low. I was afraid of being spotted, so I walked very fast. The wheels of the suitcase were covered in mud from the lakeside, and they made a 'clunking' sound when I dragged it. After I got here, I saw that no one was around, so I grabbed the handles of the suitcase with both hands and pushed it into the lake with all my might." As he spoke, he gestured the action of pushing the suitcase, and the angle of his arm movements was exactly the same as the direction of the drag marks left by the suitcase during the on-site investigation.

The investigator pressed further: "What was the state of the suitcase after you threw it into the lake? Did you do anything else to it?" Qin Kailai recalled: "When I first threw the suitcase in, it was floating on its side. Because it contained body parts, it had some weight. After a few minutes, it slowly sank, until only a small part of the edge of the suitcase was visible. I was afraid someone would find out, so I stood there for about two minutes to make sure the suitcase had mostly sunk before I turned and left." This description perfectly matched the testimony of the complainant, Zhou Guiying, that "part of the suitcase was above the water" when she found it in the early morning, as well as the police's record of the suitcase's floating position during their investigation.

Subsequently, under police escort, Qin Kailai pointed towards the west entrance of Nanhu Square and explained his route before disposing of the body: "I started from home, drove along Hubin Road, and stopped at the intersection of the west entrance to the square. Because I was afraid of being caught on camera if I drove into the square, I parked the car under the shade of a tree at the intersection. I also specifically looked around and didn't see any pedestrians before getting out of the car to drag the box." The investigation team immediately compared the footage with the previously retrieved surveillance video. The parking location Qin Kailai described was exactly the area where the black Volkswagen Magotan was seen parked in the previous surveillance footage, further confirming the authenticity of his confession.

After the identification at the waterfront platform, Qin Kailai was escorted to the vicinity of the fitness equipment area on the west side of the square. Pointing to a slight drag mark left on the ground, which the police had previously collected related footprints and fiber samples from during their investigation, he said, "When I dragged my suitcase past here, because the suitcase was too heavy, the wheels got stuck, and the bottom of the suitcase rubbed against the ground. I was worried about leaving a mark, so I specifically looked back." This detail matched the "size 43 sneaker footprints and black fiber fragments" that the police found in the area during their on-site investigation—precisely the footprints left by Qin Kailai's shoes when he dragged the suitcase, and the location where the suitcase's lining fibers had fallen off.

Immediately afterwards, police escorted Qin Kailai to the next designated location—the lakebed area 3 meters south of Nanhu Square, the same spot where the bloodstained kitchen knife and torn white plastic bags had been previously retrieved. Investigators showed Qin Kailai a photo of the retrieved knife, asking, "Is this the knife you used to dismember the body? Did you throw it here?" Upon seeing the photo, Qin Kailai visibly shrank back and nodded in confirmation: "It is this knife… After dismembering the body, I put the knife and several remaining torn plastic bags into a small bag and threw it into the lake from the waterfront platform. I didn't expect it to sink here." He added that when he threw the knife, he deliberately threw it forcefully towards the center of the lake to make it sink deeper and avoid being discovered. This explained why the location where the knife was retrieved was about 3 meters away from where the suitcase was floating, perfectly consistent with the spatial layout of the crime scene investigation.

At 10:30 a.m., the identification process at Nanhu Square concluded, and police escorted Qin Kailai to his residence in an old residential area in the western part of the city to identify the location of the dismemberment. Upon entering the apartment building where Qin Kailai lived, and reaching the door of his rented room on the third floor, he lowered his head even further. After opening the door, Qin Kailai went directly to the bathroom, the core area where he dismembered the body.
