64. Joining the army (2)

After leaving Sanbao's house, Su Jinru took her younger sister to the township government to find someone to write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation are very important. If the township head is unwilling to write one, or if he thinks you are not qualified, or if he doesn't know you well, there's nothing you can do.

Although the probability of this is very small, it is not impossible.

The current Township Head Wang is from Daben Village, but not from the Third Production Team, so Su Jinru has never had any dealings with him.

This is also why she wanted to find Jin Gui before.

Unexpectedly, upon entering the township government compound, I ran into Township Head Wang and Jingui together.

Before Su Jinru could speak, Jin Gui took the initiative to greet them.

"Aru, Ayu, what brings you here?"

Su Jinru thought, she had said she didn't want Jin Gui to know about this, but since she was already here, she might as well make the best of it.

"I brought my third sister to see Mayor Wang about something."

I heard it was official business.

Jin Gui said warmly, "What is it? Come, come, let's talk in the office."

They welcomed the sisters into the office, where the Su sisters sat at a large table. Jin Gui picked up a thermos and poured water for them.

Township Head Wang hurried to take the thermos.

"County Chief Zhang, let me do it!"

Su Jinru quickly went over to stop them.

"No, no, no, the township head and county head are pouring water for us ordinary folks. We can't afford it."

Jin Gui laughed heartily.

“We don’t have township or county heads here. We’re all from the same village, brothers and sisters, one family.”

Jin Gui poured two cups of water into two enamel mugs and placed them on the table in front of Su Jinru and her sister.

"Speak! What is it? I happen to be here today, so we can talk about anything."

Su Jinru briefly explained her purpose.

Jin Gui said, "I heard that there is only one spot for female soldiers this year, so the competition will definitely be fierce. How about this, I will write the recommendation letter, which will increase the chances of success."

Su Jinru: "Is this the right thing to do? Won't it have a negative impact on you?"

Jin Gui: "Of course it's appropriate. I was A-Yu's team leader and township head, and I watched A-Yu grow up since she was a child. I know A-Yu better than Township Head Wang, so I can write this letter of recommendation without any problem."

Ah Yu blushed with excitement: "Brother Jingui, thank you!"

Jin Gui: "No need to thank me, it's my pleasure. Ayu, you are educated and your abilities in all aspects are better than those of your peers. I have high hopes for you. If you join the army, as a girl from our village, we will all be happy and proud of you."

Township Head Wang brought over paper and a pen.

Jin Gui unscrewed the pen cap and began to write at his desk.

After Jin Gui finished writing the recommendation letter, he showed it to Mayor Wang and asked, "Mayor Wang, is there anything I need to add?"

Township Head Wang: "I think County Head Zhang wrote it very well. He fully explained Comrade Su Jinyu's strengths and also showed that he had served as Comrade Su Jinyu's production team leader and was quite familiar with her situation. This letter of recommendation is well-reasoned and carries a lot of weight. Indeed, it is much better than what I wrote."

After confirming that everything was correct, Jin Gui personally took the township government's seal, stamped it, and then handed it to Su Jinru.

"Aru, take Ayu with you tomorrow. I heard the registration deadline is tomorrow, so we can't let it be delayed."

Su Jinru: "Okay, I'll take my sister there first thing tomorrow morning. Thank you, Brother Jingui."

The next day, Su Jinru took the team's certificate and Jin Gui's recommendation letter to the Armed Forces Department.

That day, Su Jinru and her sister were still dressed in tattered clothes, but they no longer smeared yellow dirt and soot on their faces.

Su Jinru made two masks and wore them, only taking them off when she arrived at the Armed Forces Department.

When Ye Xiaolong saw Su Jinyu, he smiled and said to Su Jinru, "Not bad, not bad. Your sister looks a lot like you. We'll test her physical fitness later. You've passed the interview stage."

Su Jinru stayed in Ye Xiaolong's office, while Ye Xiaolong took Su Jinyu to do a physical fitness test.

Su Jinyu started helping with housework and farm work when she was five years old, so she was in good physical condition and naturally had no problem with the physical fitness test.

Forty minutes later, Ye Xiaolong returned with Su Jinyu.

"Su Jinru, go back and wait. We will have definite news in three days."

Ye Xiaolong even personally escorted the sisters to the entrance of the Armed Forces Department.

"Don't worry, Su Jinru. Your sister is in excellent condition and there are no problems at all. The reason we have to wait three days is because we need to report it to the higher-ups for confirmation. This is a procedure, and under normal circumstances, there won't be any unexpected issues."

Ye Xiaolong's words reassured both Su Jinru and her sister.

However, before anything is confirmed, Su Jinru still wants her family to keep a low profile.

It wasn't until the third day that people from the armed forces department came to pick up Su Jinyu in person.

They arrived wearing military uniforms and carrying a large red flower, in a green military vehicle.

The car first went to the township government, and shortly afterward, Township Head Wang led people from the armed forces department to the Su family's house.

The moment the military vehicles entered the village, it caused a sensation.

Many adults and children followed along to watch the excitement.

Whose child has joined the army?

Yes! Who's so lucky? I heard that only forty people are being recruited in the entire county, and there are only two spots available in our township with fourteen production teams.

We don't even know when to register, let alone whether the township government will write us a letter of recommendation.

Yes! People recommend their own relatives and friends. Who are you? What is your relationship with them? Why should they recommend you?

So, I need to see whose child it is to know who recommended them.

Finally, they watched as the group arrived at the Su family's residence.

"That's not right! Su Ke's son is only eleven years old, too young. How can he join the army?"

"Yes! Isn't the age range for joining the army between sixteen and eighteen?"

"Could it be a mistake?"

When Sanbao heard the news, he also rushed over to join in the fun.

"That's right, it's Su family's third daughter, Ayu."

"The third daughter of the Su family, Ayu?"

"How could that be? She's a woman."

"There are female soldiers in the army, didn't you know?"

"There are female soldiers, but they recruit very few each year."

"This year, our county only has one spot for female soldiers."

"Sanbao, how did you know?"

“I issued Su Jinyu’s household registration certificate and academic certificate, so of course I know about them.”

"You know why you didn't tell us? It's not like Su Jinyu is the only girl of marriageable age in our village. If she can go, my daughter can go too."

"Yes! There are plenty of girls who are better than Su Jinyu, so why her of all people?"

Sanbao: "Does your daughter have a junior high school education? Is she as tall as Su Jinyu? Is she as pretty as Su Jinyu?"

"Su Jinyu is just a woman who was jilted at the altar. What's so great about her?"
