47. There is porridge

Jin Gui: "Let's cook some porridge for everyone now! Many people are probably about to collapse! Cooking it sooner can save a few lives."

Others chimed in, “Yes, yes, they were starving and about to die.”

Su Jinru: "Brother Jingui, don't rush to cook the porridge. We need to have a meeting to discuss how to protect this rice."

In her previous life, Su Jinru read books and learned about the famine and the many tragic experiences that occurred in many places.

Jin Gui was puzzled: "Of course, this rice is placed here, and then patrol teams are sent to guard it day and night!"

Su Jinru: "Of course the patrol team has to keep watch day and night, but how many people are on the patrol team? At most ten! Because they have to take turns on duty, usually there are only five people on duty. But how many people are there in our Daben Village? More than 1,800. Even if dozens of people have starved to death now, apart from children and the elderly, there are only seven or eight hundred people left. How can five patrol teams be a match for more than eight hundred people?"

Accountant Xu understood: "You mean, you're afraid the villagers will come and steal the rice if they find out we bought so much?"

Su Jinru: "I heard from the person who sold us the rice that in another village, the village officials finally managed to get a batch of rice and bought it, intending to restore the collective canteen. But in less than two days, the news spread, and people from other villages heard that this village had bought a lot of rice and came to grab it. The crowd was so large that it swept in like a tidal wave, broke down the door of the public building where their village stored grain, rushed in like madmen, and looted all the grain. Some people even stuffed the white rice into their mouths on the spot, and several died from overeating."

Everyone felt a chill run down their spines after hearing Su Jinru's words.

These starving people are indeed capable of doing such things.

For several months in a row, many people had not had a full meal.

Some people haven't eaten anything for days.

Su Jinru: "If the news that the third production team of Daben Village bought 1,000 jin of rice is announced, our public housing will be completely surrounded within half a day. These two wooden doors of the public housing will not be able to stop it at all, and neither will our village cadres. The 1,000 jin of rice will be snatched up in just a few minutes."

Jin Gui: "Aru is right. We were just too happy to think things through. This kind of thing can happen in other places, and it will happen here too. We need to take precautions to prevent this from happening."

"We must keep this secret. All of us here are village cadres. We must strictly protect this secret. We cannot tell the outside world how much grain we bought. We should say that we only bought a few dozen kilograms to tide us over."

Accountant Xu: "Yes! If we say we bought a few dozen kilograms of rice, no one will come to snatch it. But if we say we bought a thousand kilograms of rice, I'm afraid everyone who hears the news will be tempted to grab some!"

Jin Gui said solemnly, "Each of us must keep this secret to ourselves. No one else will be told except for a few of us, including our wives, children, parents, and siblings."

Accountant Xu: "Jingui personally scoops out the rice for the porridge every day and hands it to the person cooking it. No one else is allowed to enter that room except for me and Jingui. Your patrol team must ensure that no one gets near that room."

Everyone agrees.

Accountant Xu: "Go cook porridge now and distribute it to all the commune members. Aru, go start the fire. Jingui, go scoop the rice. Sanwa, go fetch water. The rest of you, go door to door and tell everyone to bring their bowls to the communal canteen for their meals."

"For example, some people in the team starved to death. In order to prevent the situation from getting worse, the team bought dozens of kilograms of rice to cook porridge for everyone."

After listening to Accountant Xu's words, everyone went off to take action separately.

Jin Gui scooped out ten jin of rice and carefully locked the room door.

He sighed.

We bought a thousand jin of rice. It sounds like a lot, but it's actually not that much. Our team of over two hundred people can only cook ten jin of rice a day to make porridge. It's impossible to be full; we'll just avoid starvation. Even if we eat sparingly like this, it'll only last us three months.

Su Jinru: "Let's just take it one day at a time. Maybe the relief supplies will arrive in three months!"

Jin Gui: "I used to look forward to this relief food every day, but I was disappointed every day. Now I don't even dare to hope that it will come true."

Soon, the water arrived, and Su Jinru didn't even bother rinsing the rice; she just put it directly into the pot to cook.

These rice plants grow and are hulled in the space, a process completely free of pollution. There's no need to wash them; washing them would actually cause the rice to lose its nutrients.

As soon as the rice was put into the pot, the villagers heard that the team was cooking porridge, so they all came with torches and bowls.

Those with impatient tempers, seeing that the fire had just been lit, couldn't wait and immediately came to help.

Seeing that more and more people had arrived, Su Jinru stood up and said, "You all take care of it. I still have two children at home, and I'm worried about them. I'll go back and check on them first."

Jin Gui followed Su Jinru out of the public housing.

"Aru, you've worked hard today. You can go home now! The porridge is ready, I'll bring it to you."

“Brother Jingui, I’ve already eaten, I won’t eat anymore, don’t bring any more. You’ll have a lot to do tonight.”

"Tonight, I'm keeping watch here with the patrol team."

"Brother Jin Gui, you've worked hard."

On her way back, Su Jinru encountered groups of people coming to get food.

Some people didn't believe it and asked everyone they met, "Is it true? I heard there's porridge being served in the cafeteria tonight?"

Su Jinru smiled and said, "Yes! It's true. We'll have porridge tonight, and I can finally get a good night's sleep."

Some people came in a hurry, and some were even elderly, leaning on canes and trembling. Their expressions were very anxious.

He kept muttering, "Hurry up, hurry up, or they'll all be gone."

Su Jinru comforted her, "Don't rush, we just lit the fire, it won't be cooked in a short time."

Hearing everyone cheering and jumping for joy, Su Jinru felt a mix of emotions.

Hopefully, this 1,000 kilograms of rice will allow everyone to spend the next three months in peace.

Su Jinru didn't see her mother and the others along the way, so she went straight to her parents' house.

"Mom, didn't anyone tell you to go get some porridge?"

Mom: "We've been notified, but we're not going to collect it. We don't need the food. Let them eat more."

Su Ke: "I heard that the team only bought a few dozen kilograms of rice, which will only last for a few days."

Su Jinru: "No matter how much grain the team buys, you have to eat it, otherwise people will suspect that we are hoarding grain."

Liu Yulan: "Yes, it was our mistake. We'll go get the food now."

Su Jinyu: "There's a food shortage right now, sister, where can I buy rice?"

Su Jinru appeared completely unaware.

"I do not know either."
