148. Teasing

As he spoke, Yuan Wenjie laughed again.

"What...is so funny?"

"I laughed at how nervous and pretentious you were back then."

"Isn't it reasonable to be a little wary of two strange men? Especially since the first transaction is at night."

"It should be, but what good is your guard if you actually encounter a criminal?"

"That means I'm lucky! I didn't encounter any thugs."

"You are indeed very lucky."

“You could tell I was nervous, so you agreed to whatever conditions I asked for.”

"Yes! For a kitten that's baring its teeth and bluffing, just stroke its fur and soothe it."

"They actually compared me to a kitten."

"There is no more fitting metaphor than this: back then it was a snarling kitten, now it's a docile kitten."

Just then, I arrived home and entered the yard.

Su Jinru felt that he had been teasing her the whole way, so she couldn't help but raise her hand and punch him a few times.

"Serves you right for laughing at me! Serves you right for laughing at me!"

But when she pounded her fist on his hard, solid body, it didn't hurt at all; instead, it hurt her hand.

Yuan Wenjie burst into laughter.

At this moment, An Xin and An Ran also returned.

An Xin's sweet voice rang out from the doorway: "Dad, I heard your laughter before I even came in. What's making you so happy?"

Hei Zi rushed in first, circling around Yuan Wenjie and Su Jinru, wagging its tail.

Before, when the two of them took Hei Zi out, they would play for a long time. Now that things are not peaceful outside, Su Jinru told them not to linger outside for too long, so they would only go for a short while before going home.

Su Jinru said, "We'll go back to Daben Village in a few days, then you can let Heizi stay outside a little longer."

Anran: "Mom, why don't Anxin and I go back today and stay at Grandma's house?"

Su Jinru: "I don't have time to take you back. Let's go back together in a few days."

"We don't need you to take us back. We'll go back ourselves. We still have Hei Zi, right? With Hei Zi with us, no one will dare to bully us."

“We’ll take you back this afternoon,” Yuan Wenjie said.

Su Jinru: "It takes more than three hours to go there and back, don't bother."

“It’s okay. When I was marching, it was normal to walk fifty or sixty kilometers a day. Going back to my grandmother’s house is only about twenty kilometers round trip.”

The two children cheered and jumped for joy.

"Oh! We can go back now, Hei Zi. Let's go back to Da Ben Village, and we can run as much as we want, just like before."

"Just spoil them!"

"I'll also go back and visit my parents."

Yuan Wenjie: "Then let's make lunch. After lunch, we'll go back in the afternoon."

The family of four worked together, each contributing their own efforts to cook.

Su Jinru quietly took out some meat from her spatial storage.

The two children were used to their mother suddenly bringing out a particular food.

Su Jinru explained that she had to hide the food properly, otherwise it would be stolen by mice or other animals.

Yuan Wenjie had just arrived at this house and hadn't been to An Ran and An Xin's rooms yet. He wasn't very familiar with the items in the house, so he naturally wouldn't suspect where Su Jinru's meat came from.

Because of her precious recovery, she could only eat light meals, so it was still stewed chicken and steamed fish.

The other two dishes were stir-fried vegetables, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and radish soup.

Yuan Wenjie said, "I've been really lucky these past two days, being able to eat such a sumptuous meal."

In later generations, such a standard of living would be commonplace for ordinary families.

However, at this time, most families could barely get enough to eat, and they couldn't even eat rice freely. They rarely saw any meat throughout the year.

Except for Chinese New Year, we rarely get to eat meat.

Yuan Wenjie's meals in the army were very simple, and he only carried some dry rations when he went out on missions.

Su Jinru's family maintained this standard of living last night, and it remains so at noon today.

Yuan Wenjie naturally believed that Su Jinru had specially brought out all her best treasures to cook for him, either for Jin Gui or for his sake.

Because even pork is only supplied in fixed quantities of a few ounces per year, not to mention less common meats like chicken and fish.

Su Jinru's space is filled with chicken and fish; her family eats them every day, every meal, without any problem.

However, she still went along with Yuan Wenjie's words.

"This was made especially for you; it's because of you that Jin Gui is so fortunate."

The two children knew, of course, that this was just a normal part of their family's daily life, but their mother said it to please their father.

They also wanted to make their father happy.

Anxin said, "Yes! Dad, we are able to eat such delicious food because of you."

Anxin is more clever and lively than Anran.

An Ran remained silent, only secretly smiling to herself.

Yuan Wenjie keenly sensed something.

What are you all laughing at?

An Ran honestly replied, "We weren't laughing at anything!"

He tried to appear serious as he spoke, but couldn't hide the upturned corners of his mouth.

An Xin laughed without any restraint and said, "We didn't laugh, we didn't laugh."

Yuan Wenjie glanced at An Xin and Su Jinru.

Do you think I have something wrong with my eyes?

An Xin smiled and said, "We're happy to see you, so we naturally smile. Isn't it good that we're smiling?"

Yuan Wenjie naturally couldn't believe that the three of them were laughing so happily, yet pretending not to laugh, simply because they saw him happy.

However, he pretended to be confused.

"Great! From now on, whenever I'm home, you all have to be this happy as you are today."

Su Jinru: "You're the joy of our family."

This was the first time Yuan Wenjie had ever heard the word "pistachio," and he couldn't help but ask in confusion, "Is there such a fruit as a pistachio?"

"Yes, I have!"

What does it look like?

"Just like you."

Everyone burst out laughing.

After dinner, An Xin and An Ran cleaned up the kitchen at home, while Su Jinru and Yuan Wenjie went to deliver food to Jin Gui.

Su Jinru was carrying two lunch boxes, one of which contained chicken soup in an enamel mug.

Yuan Wenjie was carrying a large bag of fruit, which contained apples, bananas, oranges, and grapes.

Yuan Wenjie had eaten plenty of these fruits before.

But he couldn't help asking, "Where did you buy these rare items? It's hard to find fruits like these on the market. Even if you do manage to buy some, they don't taste as good or look as nice as the ones you bought."

Su Jinru thought for a moment, then said seriously, "Yuan Wenjie, if we're going to live together from now on, you have to promise me one thing. If you promise me this, I'll agree to everything else."

Yuan Wenjie said with great interest, "What are the conditions? Tell me."

"I can buy food that most people can't, including rice, sweet potatoes and potatoes, vegetables and meat and eggs, but you should never ask me where I buy these things."
