126. Bites (1)

That evening, after Anran and Anxin had dinner, they took Heizi outside to run around wildly.

Back then, the county town consisted of only two short streets, with a few scattered houses nearby, and beyond that, just open fields.

Every evening after dinner, Anxin and Anran would take Heizi to run and play on the country paths.

Several of Anran's friends also came out to play with them.

Everyone was having a great time when Li Jianming's mother, Wang Yuzhen, came looking for them.

Upon seeing her son, Wang Yuzhen immediately launched into a tirade of abuse.

"After eating, he doesn't wash the dishes or tidy up the house, then he comes here to play like a madman, chasing after a dead dog. What's so funny about that?"

As Li Jianming's mother spoke, she grabbed her son's arm.

Li Jianming struggled to say, "I'll tidy up when I get back. Let me play a little longer."

"No, you'd better go back right now, or I'll break your legs."

His mother's domineering attitude made Li Jianming lose face in front of his friends. He stubbornly shouted, "Why can other families keep dogs but we can't? Why can other children go out to play after dinner but we can't?"

When Li Jianming's mother heard her son say that, she slapped him without saying a word.

"You little brat, you dare to talk back to me? You'll do whatever others do, even if they eat shit? Go back here."

"I'm not going, I'm not going."

Seeing her son's stubborn temper, Wang Yuzhen raised her hand to hit him, but Li Jianming ducked to avoid it, which made Wang Yuzhen even more furious.

Seeing his mother was angry, Li Jianming slipped away to avoid a beating.

Wang Yuzhen chased after him and hit him, while Li Jianming chased after him desperately.

Hei Zi ran alongside Li Jianming, and when Li Jianming was about to be caught by Wang Yuzhen, it deliberately blocked Wang Yuzhen's path.

The other kids ran alongside, laughing and shouting: "Go Li Jianming, run faster!"

So, on a path through the empty fields, a boy ran desperately ahead, a black dog flanking him from behind, a woman chasing after him, and a group of children following behind, shouting and laughing.

Exhausted and panting, Wang Yuzhen watched as Li Jianming ran far away, unable to catch up, and collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.

Kuroko and the children gathered around her, their eyes filled with the joy of victory.

Wang Yuzhen felt she had suffered an immense and humiliating disgrace.

She pointed at An Ran and said, "You're not allowed to invite my Li Jianming out to play anymore. I won't allow him to play with you."

An Ran innocently replied, "I didn't call him; he came to play with me on his own."

"You're not allowed to play with him anymore. If you don't want him to come, he naturally won't come."

An Ran disliked the woman's tone of voice.

He disliked this woman even more.

His mother never scolded or beat him or his sister, nor did she interfere with who they played with.

An Ran stiffened her neck.

"His legs are his own body. If he wants to come, what can I do? I can't chase him away."

"What kind of dog do you keep? It's useless except for wasting food."

"It's useful. Heizi can guard the house. With Heizi around, thieves won't dare to break into our house."

Wang Yuzhen glanced sideways at An Ran, then at An Xin.

"I know why your family can afford to keep dogs: because your mother has many men, so she has a lot of money."

An Ran didn't know what Wang Yuzhen meant by those words, but he had a gut feeling that they weren't nice.

"You're talking nonsense. My mother has a salary and can support us and Hei Zi."

Wang Yuzhen sneered: "My husband and I only earn fifty yuan a month combined. After feeding our family of five, we don't have any money left over to keep a dog. Your mother only earns thirty yuan a month to support the three of you. Where would she get the money to keep a dog?"

An Ran: "Our family has the money to support Hei Zi, and your family doesn't. That's your business, what does it have to do with us?"

“Our family doesn’t have the money to keep a dog because we earn our money cleanly, unlike your family. Your mother is a young and beautiful woman who is divorced and will not remarry. She has had many relationships with men. Your family doesn’t have any men, but there are quite a few men who come to see your mother.”

Wang Yuzhen's mocking smile deeply stung An Ran and An Xin.

They remembered how, back in Daben Village Elementary School, their classmates used the same tone and expression when they mocked their fathers.

Their father is real, but this woman is slandering their mother.

An Ran recalled that when she was in Daben Village, the mother of the classmate whose finger she had bitten off came to slander her mother and was beaten up by her mother. After that, no one in the village dared to slander her mother to her face.

An Ran straightened her chest and said to Wang Yuzhen, "You are a bad woman. It's one thing to beat and scold your own son, but you also slander my mother. You are a bad woman, a bad woman."

When An Xin saw her brother cursing at Wang Yuzhen, she wanted to join in.

An Xin also shouted along with her brother: "My mother is a good mother. She never hits or scolds us. You are a bad woman, a shameless bad woman, a bad woman who even hits her own children."

Wang Yuzhen was so angry that she stood up abruptly.

"Oh ho! You two little brats, just like your mother, so shameless."

"You're the one who's cheap, you're a cheap woman."

"Slut, slut, slut..."

How could Wang Yuzhen tolerate being publicly insulted like this by two little brats? She suddenly stood up and pounced on An Xin, the weakest of the two.

Before her hand could even reach An Xin, she was slammed to the ground by a dark figure.

It turns out it was a black hat.

Then, Hei Zi pounced and bit her hand, and Wang Yuzhen's hand immediately bled profusely.

Wang Yuzhen screamed in agony as Hei Zi bit her again, tearing her clothes to shreds. Seeing Hei Zi baring its teeth and lunging at her again, she was terrified and scrambled away as fast as she could.

Hei Zi chased after him, and An Ran quickly called out: Hei Zi.

Hei Zi stopped and looked back at An Ran.

An Ran, fearing that Hei Zi would cause trouble, called out to Hei Zi again, "Hei Zi, come here!"

Blackie looked at Wang Yuzhen, who was running away with her head in her hands, then at An Ran, and finally ran to An Ran's side.

An Ran pulled An Xin along.

"Anxin, Heizi, let's go home."

Anran and Anxin walked home, while Heizi skipped and hopped along behind them.

Wang Yuzhen held her blood-soaked hand, sweating profusely from the pain.

Watching An Ran and her brother leave with Hei Zi, she spat viciously on the ground.

"You just wait, I'll skin you alive and see if you can still bully others like this!"

An Ran and An Xin returned home dejectedly, and Su Jinru could tell at a glance that the two children were unhappy.
