Chapter 240 The hidden truth
"Brother Asakawa, do you think this case is really over?"
Conan sat at the counter of Asakawa Yu's shop, his legs dangling in mid-air, and he asked Asakawa Yu a question while resting his face on his hand.
"Didn't Inspector Megure say that the culprit has been found and the motive makes sense? What are you still hesitating about?"
Asakawa Yu idly wiped the cup in her hand while chatting with Conan.
Just yesterday, Inspector Megure went to the Mori Detective Agency to tell the Mori family that the case had been solved.
They said that this was exactly what they had expected: the two had agreed from the beginning to kill each other's wives so that Sakihara could rightfully inherit Megumi's family fortune and elope with her sister.
But unexpectedly, things took an unexpected turn, and Xiao Hui did not die, but her younger sister Kuan Mei became her scapegoat.
"But I just feel that some things are strange. I have a feeling that there must be more to this story."
[Here it comes! If I, Conan, say this isn't so simple, then it definitely is!]
[Progress bar warning!]
Holy crap, there's a sequel?! How are they going to act from here on out?!
Conan was deep in thought with a serious expression, but all he got in return was Ai Haibara's disdain for him.
"Hey, you great detective, you dragged me here right after class just to talk about something like this?"
After Professor Agasa returned yesterday, Ai Haibara went back to live with him. She had originally planned to go back after school to help him pack his luggage, but Conan dragged her here instead.
"Haha... I was just too anxious, so I thought I'd ask Asakawa-nii if he had any clues."
Conan scratched his head and smiled apologetically, realizing that what he had done was indeed a bit inappropriate.
"I think it would be better to let this matter end here."
"Huh? What do you mean by that?" Conan asked, noticing Asakawa Yu's words.
"It's nothing, I just feel that this is the best outcome. Xiao Hui is safe and sound, and the scumbag has been arrested. Isn't this a happy ending?"
"Judging from your expression, do you mean you've figured something out?"
Conan immediately grasped the key point in Asakawa Yu's words.
Asakawa Yu shrugged. "I didn't say that."
"It's just a pity for Xiaohui. Being treated like this by her own family must be very painful for her."
Akemi came out of the kitchen and joined the conversation.
"Oh, right! The uncle said he's going to take us to Sister Xiaohui's house tomorrow to see her. I can try to look for anything suspicious."
Conan's words earned him eye rolls from Ai Haibara and Yu Asakawa.
"Even if you do find something amiss, what are you planning to do?" Asakawa Yu looked at Conan thoughtfully and asked.
"Of course, we should reveal the truth to the world and clear his name!" Conan exclaimed excitedly.
"Have you considered that the truth might not be acceptable to everyone?" Asakawa Yu continued to ask.
“But…” Conan fell silent for a moment, and he began to think about why Asakawa Yu had said that.
From the first time he met Asakawa Yu, he told himself not to let momentary impulses blind him, because what emerges from the truth can sometimes be hurtful.
Conan still remembers the incident on Moonlight Island.
He vaguely remembered that Asakawa Yu once told him that a true detective is one who can do things with a clear conscience after uncovering the truth.
"..."
Seeing Conan remain silent, Asakawa Yu ignored him and continued with her work.
"Boss, do you really know something?" Akemi whispered in Asakawa Yu's ear.
"I guess so, but all of this is just my speculation..." Asakawa Yu didn't make his words so explicit.
"Oh? Why don't you tell me? It would be good for my great detective to see the differences between people." Ai Haibara looked at Asakawa Yu and Conan, raising an eyebrow.
Just as Asakawa Yu was about to say something to Akemi, Conan suddenly spoke up:
"No matter what the final truth is, or what it represents, I will find it out no matter what, because that's what a detective is!"
Seeing Conan's determined gaze, Asakawa Yu was a little stunned, but then smiled with relief.
"Since you've put it that way, then I'll take a look." Asakawa Yu put down her cup. "If this is what you call 'justice'."
"As for what happens after the truth is revealed, that's not my concern, right?"
"...I will do my best."
After saying that, Conan slung his backpack over his shoulder and left.
From his conversation with Asakawa Yu, Conan realized one thing—there really are still some clues in this case that he hasn't discovered yet, and there's more to it than meets the eye.
However, Asakawa Yu did not definitively rule it out, suggesting that he himself might only be speculating.
The real truth is something he has to find for himself.
After Conan left, Akemi asked, "Boss, what exactly did you mean by what you were saying just now?"
Before Asakawa Yu could answer, Haibara Ai spoke up first: "I think what they mean is that although the police have solved the case, the truth may not be what they think, and there may be other hidden stories."
Ai Haibara changed the subject, "But it's very possible that some people won't be able to accept the real truth after it comes out, that's what I mean, right?"
Ai Haibara looked towards the spot where Asakawa Yu had interrupted, hoping to get an answer from him.
That's just how the world is; sometimes, letting things sink to the bottom of the water is the best outcome.
Recalling Asakawa Yu's earlier advice to Conan, Akemi instantly realized something.
"Boss, you mean..."
Mingmei's mouth dropped open as she thought of the explanation she least wanted to accept.
Only in this way can we demonstrate how correct what Asakawa Yu just said was.
"Hey sister, what kind of riddle are you two playing?"
Because she didn't go out with Asakawa Yu and the others at the time, Ai Haibara couldn't understand anything about the current situation.
The only thing I can understand is that the final truth may not be so simple...
