Chapter 31 Come to the door
Su Heng hasn't been to school for three days.
Liang Qing learned about this through a message sent to her by Chen Cuo.
That evening, she arrived at the entrance of the villa area where Su Heng lived, based on the address provided by Chen Cuo. She then successfully obtained permission from the gatekeeper using the password provided by Chen Cuo and arrived at Su Heng's house.
Liang Qing stood under the streetlight in front of the door sign, holding an umbrella. It was drizzling, and the street was deserted except for her.
[Xiao Qi, how long until Su Heng comes back?] Liang Qing had already asked the system about Su Heng's whereabouts before she came. The system told her that Su Heng would go out around 8:30 pm tonight to get something for his sister. Based on the route, he would be back in about half an hour, so she rushed over.
After checking, Xiaoqi replied, "Host, he's almost there. He's already at the guardhouse."
Liang Qing glanced at his watch; it was nine o'clock at night, and the guardhouse was about a five-minute walk from here.
Liang Qing crossed her arms and waited quietly for time to pass. When she heard a strange sound on the street other than the sound of rain, she knew that the person she was waiting for had returned.
Liang Qing looked up and followed the sound, her gaze meeting Su Heng's in mid-air.
Su Heng held a black umbrella in his right hand and carried a leather bag in his left.
Upon seeing Liang Qing, his gaze was clearly filled with surprise, along with an indescribable emotion.
He squeezed the umbrella handle, quickly looked away, and continued walking with his head down.
Liang Qing felt that his usual arrogance had vanished at this moment, and he looked very dejected.
Just as Su Heng was about to pass Liang Qing, Liang Qing realized that Su Heng really wanted to pretend he couldn't see her.
A second or two after he passed Liang Qing, Liang Qing turned around and followed, calling out, "Su Heng."
Su Heng paused, stopping in his tracks.
Liang Qing waited a few seconds, and seeing that he did not turn around or reply, she stepped forward and stood in front of him again.
Liang Qing noticed Su Heng's brows furrow slightly, so quickly that it was almost imperceptible.
He avoided looking at her, and his expression was strange, as if he was struggling with whether or not to pay attention to her.
"Su Heng," Liang Qing called out again.
Hearing Liang Qing call his name, Su Heng gritted his teeth and looked up at her impatiently, saying, "Just say what you have to say!"
Su Heng immediately regretted his words, because he saw that Liang Qing seemed somewhat at a loss, as if he had been frightened by him.
He added irritably, "Fine, come in with me."
Then he walked to his front door and entered the password, and Liang Qing followed without saying a word.
The two walked through the garden and into the inner room. Before entering the room, Su Heng closed his umbrella and put it directly into the bucket by the door.
He made a lot of noise; the umbrella made a loud thud when it hit the bucket.
"Put the umbrella here and take off your shoes." He said this and went into the inner room.
Liang Qing did as he was told. After taking off his shoes, he stepped across the threshold and saw that Su Heng had already changed into slippers, and there was a pair of women's slippers next to him.
He gestured with his chin toward Liang Qing, his tone less than friendly: "These are my sister's shoes, you can wear them."
"Thank you," Liang Qing said, changing into slippers and glancing around the room. "Is there anyone else in your house?"
Su Heng's face darkened upon hearing this. "What do you mean by that? What kind of person do you take me for?"
When Liang Qing saw his strong reaction, she knew he had misunderstood and thought that she asked the question because she was afraid that Su Heng would have ulterior motives towards her, since they were alone together. In fact, Liang Qing had just asked the question casually.
But if I explain the truth to Su Heng, he might still think I'm faking it, so I'd better play dumb to avoid making things worse.
So Liang Qing looked at him with a puzzled expression and threw the question back at him: "Huh? What are you talking about?"
Liang Qing looked completely innocent, and Su Heng realized that Liang Qing didn't mean it that way; he had been overthinking and misunderstanding.
He coughed awkwardly, "The nanny doesn't live here; she goes home after dinner. My parents are abroad, and my sister is busy."
"Okay." Liang Qing nodded.
After what had just happened, perhaps still feeling awkward, Su Heng was more polite to Liang Qing. He pointed to the sofa in the living room and said to Liang Qing, "Please sit down first."
After Liang Qing sat down, she realized that Su Heng was nowhere to be found, so she could only wait quietly for Su Heng to return.
A few minutes later, Su Heng returned with two glasses of water. He handed one to Liang Qing and sat down opposite her with the other glass.
Liang Qing took the water and found it was warm. She looked at Su Heng with some surprise, realizing that even the temperamental Su Heng had a thoughtful side.
Rainy days are always cool and shady, so Su Heng drank a few sips to warm himself up.
"Speak. What do you want from me?"
Su Heng's expression turned sour again, and he frowned slightly, almost imperceptibly.
Liang Qing guessed that he already knew why she had come.
She succinctly stated: "A drawing competition."
Su Heng glared at her fiercely upon hearing this.
Seeing his reaction, Liang Qing immediately concluded that he had indeed known all along, and that Chen Cuo had probably told him.
"Chen Cuo said you would come, but I didn't believe it." Su Heng looked away and sneered.
He then put down his glass and added sarcastically, "Do you think Chen Cuo would still ask you to persuade me if he knew I gave up painting because of you?"
"But what I'm more curious about is, you went to great lengths to get me to give up painting back then, so why are you agreeing to his request now?"
"And you actually dared to come."
Liang Qing remained unfazed; she had prepared herself for all his sarcastic remarks before she arrived.
"I came because I regretted it."
Liang Qing said this, but there was not a trace of remorse in her voice.
Su Heng stood up angrily: "Even now you're still making fun of me. Look at yourself, do you look like you regret it?"
Liang Qing looked up at him and asked earnestly, "I want to ask you first, did you really give up painting because of me?"
Su Heng gritted his teeth, "Otherwise what? Didn't you say my paintings are trash, and that if I want to be with you, I have to give up this kind of low-class stuff?"
Liang Qing stared at him quietly for a few seconds, then burst out laughing.
Upon hearing this, Su Heng clenched his fists, veins bulging on his hands. "Are you mocking me?"
Liang Qing wiped away the tears that had welled up in her eyes from laughing and waved to Su Heng, "Don't misunderstand, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing at myself."
Su Heng's furrowed brows relaxed, and he asked in confusion, "What's so funny?"
Liang Qing stood up from the sofa: "I laugh at myself for losing to you. How could someone like me lose to someone like you?"
She walked up to Su Heng and pointed at him, saying, "You think I came here today to persuade you to participate in the painting competition? Think again. I don't think you're even qualified to participate."
Su Heng found her mischievous little hands increasingly irritating and said angrily, "Then what are you doing here?"
Liang Qing said calmly, "I want you to participate in the competition."
Su Heng looked at her with the eyes of someone looking at an idiot.
"You are sick."
I just said I didn't think he was qualified to participate in the competition, but now I'm asking him to participate.
