Ugly girl only wants to farm

Chapter 9: One shop was gone just like that.

Looking at the person in front of him, Xu Bao'er was still a little scared. After all, the slap she had given him earlier was really hard. Even now, thinking about it, his face still felt a little sore! The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, and this resentment lingered for a long time.

Just then, he saw Xu Chaoyan eating pastries without any guard up, and an evil thought immediately came to mind.

He crept over quietly, and taking her by surprise, snatched the oil paper package from her hand. He then threw it to the ground and stomped on it several times in anger, saying viciously, "Eat, eat, eat! All you do is eat! Look at your face, it's oozing pus and you still won't stop eating. If you keep eating like this, you'll only get uglier!"

Xu Chaoyan was startled by his sudden action, and the cake in her hand fell to the ground.

Her eyes widened as she glared angrily at Xu Bao'er, and she retorted, "You brat, you didn't hurt me enough just now, did you? You even dare to waste food!"

Xu Chaoyan was still feeling bad about the bag of cakes she had received. She regretted not eating more; not only had she spent money, but she hadn't even gotten to eat the cakes.

After finishing what she did, Xu Bao'er quickly hid in her room. She had no backing at the moment and dared not provoke Trumpet Flower again.

Inside the house, Xu's mother helped her pack her things, sighing as she said, "Young lady, now that you're married into the Meng family, don't hold a grudge against your husband. He only comes back once every two weeks. Just stay peacefully in the Meng family. I'll come find you when I get back from the county."

When Xu Chaoyan saw her mother packing up those gaudy clothes, she frowned and quickly went over to persuade her, "Mother Xu, what kind of gaudy clothes are you wearing? You look like a butterfly."

Mrs. Xu looked at her with a puzzled expression: "Young lady, didn't you used to love these bright colors the most, saying they suited your skin best? Do you no longer like them after you got married?"

Xu Chaoyan looked at the red, green, and blue clothes and couldn't help but complain in her heart. What kind of taste did the original owner have? How could she like such colorful clothes? Wearing them would be too eye-catching. If she wore these clothes back to the Meng family, her grandmother and Meng Taohua would probably bite her to death.

She picked out two relatively simple outfits: "Just bring these two, the rest..."

She paused for a moment, glanced at the fabric of the dress, and thought it looked quite nice: "How about you give it to your wife if you don't mind, Mom?"

She asked this tentatively, and Mrs. Xu smiled broadly and said, "Young lady, you wear fine clothes, how could you look down on that old woman? So I won't be presumptuous and will accept it."

Xu's mother glanced at the sky outside. Since Xu's father had not yet returned, she discussed with Xu Chaoyan: "Sister, you will have to take an oxcart to the village this time, which will take some time. Why don't you pack your things today and go back early tomorrow morning? You can have dinner with the master tonight. Once the master goes to the county, you will have fewer opportunities to meet."

Xu Chaoyan didn't care, but she didn't like riding the oxcart slowly back to the village. Although it was already October and the summer heat wasn't that intense, she still disliked going back feeling sticky.

It was a good time to go back while the weather was still cool in the morning, so she nodded and said, "I'll do whatever Mom decides."

After dinner was ready, the three sisters sat at the table, waiting for their father to return. Xu Zhu'er, being young, couldn't resist and reached out to touch the chicken leg again and again, only to be glared at by Xu Chaoyan with a stern look.

Seeing her younger sister's pitiful look, Xu Bao shouted, "Big sister, little sister is hungry and she's the youngest. Can't she eat a little?"

Xu Chaoyan pointed to the broken bag of pastries: "If you're hungry, eat that first to tide you over."

The brother and sister were so angry with him that they sat there sulking.

It was half an hour later when Mr. Xu returned, exhausted. The food had been reheated in the kitchen.

When Madam Xu saw the two siblings with their heads hanging low, she scolded the servants in the kitchen.

Xu Chaoyan looked at her calmly and said, "Mother, it is my fault. You and Father have not returned yet. How can we, the younger generation, eat first? It is against etiquette."

One sentence left Madam Xu speechless.

After the meal, Xu's father told his son and daughter to go and rest for a while, as they had some things to discuss.

Seeing her father's hesitant expression, Xu Chaoyan guessed what he wanted to say to her.

The cup of tea was almost empty, but Mr. Xu didn't say a word, while Mrs. Xu watched helplessly from the side.

Finally, he simply spoke up himself: "My dear girl, it's like this. Today, your father and I went out to sell the shop and some of our family's farmland. We'll be moving the whole family to the county town soon."

Xu Chaoyan nodded and listened to her continue.

Seeing that she was staring at her without responding, Madam Xu had no choice but to continue.

“Originally, our family had three shops. Your father and I had discussed that each of you, brother and sister, would have one. But since you just married into the Meng family, the land deeds for these shops haven’t been transferred yet. Your father and I discussed converting them into cash to help our family out of the crisis. We’ll make up the difference to you when we’re better off in the future.”

Mr. Xu looked guilty: "My dear girl, it's my fault for being useless. I'll make it up to you in the future."

So all this talk was just about taking over her shop. She hadn't heard Xu's mother mention this before, only that she had given some worthless jewelry, some silver, and clothes for all four seasons as part of her dowry. Now they've acted first and informed her later.

Xu Chaoyan had nothing to say. Her eyes were somewhat dim, and she lowered her head. Seeing her troubled look, her father spoke up again: "Father knows that now that you are married into the Meng family, your son-in-law will need a lot of money for his studies. Don't worry, wait until Father and I start doing business and earn the first sum of money to pay you back."

At this moment, Xu Chaoyan was wondering what kind of shop it was. Madam Xu had gone to great lengths to take it back; could it be that the shop was very profitable?

Seeing that she didn't say anything, Xu's father continued, "It's also my fault. I didn't originally plan to use this shop, but your mother's younger brother had some trouble, so I had no choice."

Xu Chaoyan thought to herself, what could possibly happen? It's just a matter of one of them playing the good cop and the other the bad cop. She then gave a kind and understanding smile: "Father, please take it. Right now, I'm doing alright. Uncle's matter is more important."

When she returned to her room, Xu Chaoyan asked her mother if this was true. Her mother was confused by the question: "Master didn't tell me about this, so I didn't know. I didn't expect Madam to have this trick up her sleeve. She must want to take over the whole shop and let her children inherit it. Miss, you must not let her get away with this."

The die is cast, so Xu Chaoyan didn't bother arguing with them. Fortunately, she still had some cash, along with some clothes and hairpins. Although the amount of money wasn't much, it should be more than enough to start a small business.

With her 21st-century business acumen, she should have been able to make a living in ancient times.
