Ugly girl only wants to farm

Chapter 65 An Encounter with Zhang Xuyang

Meng Jiuxia suddenly felt a little confused and asked uncertainly, "Morning Flower, do you think these things can really be turned into money? Will anyone buy them?"

Seeing the little girl's dejected look, Xu Chaoyan quickly comforted her, "Yes, we will. As long as we work hard, we will definitely be able to sell them."

Actually, she wasn't sure either. These were ordinary things that farmers could make themselves. Who in a small town would buy them? She was just trying her luck.

The two quickened their pace, and when they arrived in town, they found a stall and set up their goods. Before they could even start selling, a man swaggered over, looked them up and down, and then said in an arrogant manner, "Did you ask for my permission to set up a stall here?"

Without even thinking, Meng Jiuxia blurted out, "Can we set up a stall here? Can I ask you now?"

Xu Chaoyan was both amused and exasperated by the girl's blunt words. She quickly stepped in to smooth things over, saying, "I'm really sorry, we're new here and don't know the rules. Please ask us."

Before she could finish speaking, the man pointed at their things and said, "Your things are taking up a lot of space, so you have to pay a stall fee of fifty coins."

Meng Jiuxia's mouth dropped open in surprise: "What fifty coins? We don't even know if we can sell these things for fifty coins. Aren't you asking for too much?"

The man stood with one hand on his hip, his round belly protruding, and looked disdainful. "Fifty coins is already cheap for you. I'm giving you two young ladies some face. What more do you want? Hand over the money now, or get the hell out of here. This street is under my jurisdiction, Zhang Dazhuang's."

Xu Chaoyan was shocked to find that selling things in a small town required paying a stall fee. It was outrageous. They didn't have a single penny in their pockets and had no choice but to pack up and leave.

Seeing such a good stall about to be lost, she kept looking back. The man raised his whip and threatened, "I'll be operating on this street. If I see you setting up a stall for me in any corner of this street again, I'll smash your belongings!"

Meng Jiuxia looked miserable: "Morning Glory, what do you suggest we do? We've failed before we even got started!"

Xu Chaoyan encouraged her a few more times: "Don't rush, let's keep looking. Or we can walk around and call out our wares. That way we can attract some attention, and she can't possibly charge us that way."

Meng Jiuxia was a little embarrassed at first. She opened her mouth again and again, but couldn't make a sound.

Xu Chaoyan demonstrated it for her, and then she quietly started calling out. At first, there were some onlookers, but after watching, they all waved their hands, saying that their own families didn't lack these things, and that their family members could easily make one out of these ordinary items.

The reason they gathered around to look was because Meng's father's craftsmanship was indeed quite good; his weaving was more delicate and ingenious, much better than the crude things in their homes.

After accompanying his parents to deliver tofu to a restaurant today, Zhang Xuyang strolled casually down the street.

Since Meng Jiuhe was injured, he has not come to the school. The teacher was initially very sorry. After hearing that he was injured, he thought that he would take all the students to visit him after a few days. Because he was close to Meng Jiuhe, he asked him about the situation. Meng Jiuhe casually made up an excuse to brush him off.

Because he had long since lost his friendship with Meng Jiuhe in private, and feeling somewhat guilty, he was even less willing to visit him. The teacher thus abandoned the idea. Since Meng Jiuhe stopped coming, he had once again firmly held the top position in the school. Although he had won first place in class, he never felt genuine joy, always feeling as if this honor was stolen.

He seemed distracted the whole way. He was regretting what he had done that day. He shouldn't have messed around with Qi Tianci and his gang. What good would it do to get first place every time?

He never felt any joy. He continued walking, intending to go home and review the lessons his teacher had just taught. Just then, a somewhat familiar figure appeared ahead, carrying one or two chairs and loudly hawking them.

He took a few steps closer before he could see the woman's face clearly. Wasn't this Meng Jiu and his newlywed wife? He had heard that their family were wealthy merchants in town. How did they end up selling things on the street?

He was puzzled, so he took a few more steps closer. Before he could ask a few questions, he heard Meng Jiuxia sighing beside him, "Morning Glory, what are we going to do if we can't sell these today? Our whole family is waiting to eat, and we still don't have money for my older brother's medicine. What are we going to do?"

Hearing this, Zhang Xuyang was shocked. Had Meng Jiuhe really fallen so low that he couldn't even afford medicine? Fortunately, he still had some conscience and regretted his past mistakes. He touched the dozen or so copper coins he had left and stepped forward to bow to Xu Chaoyan: "Madam Meng, I am Meng's classmate. Why are you two selling bamboo products? Are you facing difficulties at home?"

Not wanting to reveal what he had just overheard, he feigned a question. Xu Chaoyan had a vague recollection of the man in front of her; she seemed to have seen him from afar once before. So she returned the greeting with a brief explanation.

"My husband fell off a cliff and injured himself. All our savings went to him, so we're facing some difficulties now. I apologize for making you laugh."

Zhang Xuyang gripped the copper coin tightly in his hand, his palm slightly sweaty and damp. He never imagined that the Meng family had fallen so low that they couldn't even afford a dose of medicine.

He handed over the copper coin, saying, "I've been so busy with my studies these days that I haven't had time to visit Brother Meng. This is just a small token of my appreciation; please don't find it offensive."

Meng Jiuxia quickly stepped in front of Xu Chaoyan and said, "We don't want yours. Our elder brother said that we shouldn't accept rewards without merit. If he finds out about this, he will definitely blame us."

Meng Jiuxia actually wanted to accept the copper coins temporarily so that the whole family could have a full meal, but she still politely declined. She knew that her older brother was concerned about his reputation and would definitely not like anyone helping them, especially since that person was his classmate.

She vaguely remembered that this person used to be a good friend of her older brother, but later, for some reason, her older brother had a disagreement, and the two drifted further and further apart.

Zhang Xuyang tried to pass the copper coin several times, but couldn't get it through. Then, he had a sudden idea and took a small winnowing basket off Xu Chaoyan's back: "How about I buy it? Is this enough? If not, I'll go to my house to get more."

Xu Chaoyan didn't have as many complicated thoughts as her sister-in-law, and directly accepted the copper coin: "Alright, then I'll sell this little winnowing basket to you. Thank you for patronizing our first business. If you need anything else at home in the future, just let me know. My father-in-law's craftsmanship is excellent."
