Ugly girl only wants to farm

Chapter 47 The Gossipy Second Uncle

Meng Jiuhe looked dejected and had no appetite. Xu Chaoyan saw his appearance and comforted him, "Your injuries haven't healed yet. Eat something first and get better. There's no rush for Grandmother's matter."

Meng Jiu felt a little guilty, but he just couldn't bring himself to apologize to Xu Chaoyan.

Seeing her son's expression, Li San Niang quickly reminded him, "Everyone, let's eat first. The noodles are almost burnt. Let's finish our food first."

After dinner, when only the two of them were left in the room, Meng Jiu leaned against the headboard with a gloomy look in his eyes. Xu Chaoyan opened the closet and found that the few simple clothes were still there, but the bright clothes and some fabrics that Tao Hua had taken away earlier were gone.

After seeing Xu Chaoyan's actions, Meng Jiuhe moved his mouth several times but couldn't open it. Xu Chaoyan happened to turn around and saw his hesitant look. She knew what he wanted to say but was too proud to say it. So the two of them remained silent and neither of them made a sound.

Finally, it was Xu Chao who broke the silence: "It's getting late, why don't you wash your face and get some rest?"

Meng Jiu gave a dry reply: "Okay, then let's take a break. By the way, I apologize to you on behalf of my grandmother for what she did before. I will definitely repay you double in the future."

Xu Chaoyan's scrutinizing gaze made Meng Jiuhe feel somewhat uncomfortable. He frowned slightly and said with displeasure, "Why are you staring at me like that? Don't you trust my abilities?"

"No, it's just that I never expected you to speak to me so kindly. I'm a little flattered."

Xu Chaoyan was going to share a bed with him again tonight. Although he was somewhat reluctant, he accepted the fact. They were now husband and wife, and there were no extra rooms in the house, so they would inevitably have to sleep in the same room.

After seeing that Xu Chaoyan had finished getting ready, Meng Jiuhe moved inside a bit to make room for her.

Seeing that the man was so sensible, Xu Chaoyan lay down there with a clear conscience. The blankets were warm and cozy. Although she had slept for a while before, the unique scent of the young man still lingered on the pillow, and drowsiness washed over her.

Meng Jiuhe thought this woman was trying to take advantage of him again, but to his surprise, she fell fast asleep in the blink of an eye. He spat out a curse: "What a pig, able to eat and sleep so much!" and added in his mind, "Being able to eat and sleep so much is a blessing."

Xu Chaoyan slept until the sun was high in the sky. When she slowly opened her eyes, Meng Jiuhe was leaning against the inside, staring blankly at the top of the tent. She wondered what the mature-looking young man was thinking. Oh well, she didn't care what he was thinking. Right now, she had to solve the problem of feeding the whole family. Some family members were sick or disabled. If things continued like this, she probably wouldn't even have money for the boy's medicine.

When Meng Jiuxia saw her get up, she said irritably, "You still know how to get up? Your mother has warmed up the rice in the pot for you several times. Aren't you ashamed?"

She's gotten along fairly well with her sister-in-law these days, though the girl has a sharp tongue that won't let things go. Even when she means well, what she says is never pleasant. She's too lazy to argue with the girl, and just tells her, "Remember to call me when you go out to cut grass later, okay?"

Meng Jiuxia glanced back at her, somewhat uncertainly, and said, "Why would I ask you to come along? Are you going to help me cut it?"

Xu Chaoyan nodded: "Yes, don't you know what the situation is like at home? I should do what I can to help."

Meng Jiuxia was left looking bewildered. Had he changed his personality?

He went to the kitchen to get the still-warm rice, ate it in a few bites, sprinkled some grass into the chicken coop, and then went up the mountain with his sister-in-law carrying the basket on their backs.

Meng Jiuhe was lying in bed feeling a bit bored. He wanted Xu Chaoyan to bring him a book to look at, but he couldn't bring himself to ask. The two of them weren't that close yet. He stared blankly at the top of the tent, thinking about the family's troubles.

Suddenly, a small head peeked in through the door: "Big brother, how are you today? Are you feeling any better? I brought you some food."

Meng Jiuhe beckoned his younger brother over, and Jiu Dong obediently handed him the bowl. Meng Jiuhe asked casually, "Where did your older sister and the others go? I haven't heard any noise from them."

"Oh, you're asking about Morning Glory? She just went to the back mountain with my sister, carrying baskets on their backs."

Meng Jiu was quite surprised. Given Xu Chaoyan's pampered nature, it was the first time he had ever heard of her being able to do chores. He wondered if she was going out to cause trouble and corrupting his little sister.

Xu Chaoyan and the others returned from outside carrying a full basket of grass. Before they could even enter their own yard, they heard their second uncle's voice from afar: "Oh, it's Xia girl, you're back! It's all my fault for being so busy these past two days. I heard that Jiuhe has woken up and I forgot to come and see him. I just happened to have some free time today so I came to check on him."

Meng Jiuxia gave him a cold look and said in a chilling tone, "What does it have to do with you whether my brother wakes up or not? Go back to where you came from and don't get in my way."

Li San Niang responded with a smile, "Oh, it's my second brother! Thank God that our Jiu He is a lucky child. After being treated in town for some time, he has finally woken up."

The second uncle was very disappointed. How could this kid be so lucky? It would have been better if he had stayed unconscious. He always had the upper hand over his son. If he didn't wake up, his eldest brother's family would have to rely on him.

His nephew suddenly woke up, catching him off guard. He didn't know if his mother had gotten her head caught in a door or what, but she had been instigated by his younger sister to steal that ugly woman's dowry and run away with the money. If he had known his mother had such intentions, he should have persuaded her earlier so that she could at least raise some money for his son's betrothal.

Who knew his younger sister would be so cunning and act before him? He spent the whole night pounding his chest in frustration, unable to sleep at all.

I came here today to see if it's true or not, whether that kid is really cured or just bluffing.

Xu Chaoyan felt uncomfortable with her second uncle's forced smile. She nudged Meng Jiuxia's arm and whispered, "Little sister-in-law, isn't it heavy for you to carry? Let's put it down first and see what this smiling tiger is up to."

"Second brother, since you're here today, why don't you also check on your eldest brother? His leg injury is almost healed."

My second uncle smiled and replied, "It's only right that I look at it."

Then, as if remembering something, she said, "These two must have bumped into something and hurt their legs. I guess there's something unclean in our house. Ever since Jiu and this guy got married, things haven't been going well in your house. Do you think she might be a jinx who brings bad luck to her husbands?"
