Ugly girl only wants to farm

Chapter 156 Dog bites dog

The three of them carried their things toward the village chief's house. As they passed by their second uncle's house, Liu Shi came out of the house with a dark expression on her face and snorted a few times when she saw them.

He then strode over, grabbed a basin of water, and splashed it over, cursing under his breath: "What kind of cats and dogs are these, coming near our house? They're bad luck, don't ruin my family's fortune."

The Liu family's courtyard wall was built rather low, only about half a person's height, and their gate was open. It was more like a fence than a gate, and they happened to see the three people walking past it.

She was still seething with anger after her husband had just given her a good scolding without even asking what happened. Seeing these three people walk by, she decided to vent her anger.

After pouring the water, she looked at them apologetically and said, "Oh, it's my eldest nephew. I'm so sorry, your second aunt and I have been working so hard to support your cousin's education, supplement the family income, and mend clothes. Our eyes have been ruined. We didn't see the three of you and thought you were some animals. We must have been seeing things."

She spilled the water, and that was that. It would have been better if she hadn't spoken to her in a sarcastic way. Meng Jiuxia was just a young girl, and she couldn't stand what she said. Her face changed instantly, and tears welled up in her eyes as she looked aggrieved: "Big brother."

Meng Jiuhe's expression wasn't much better. He hadn't originally intended to argue with them; he was just passing by, but Liu had made things difficult for them.

The water was some kind of filth, and some of it splashed onto Xu Chaoyan's skirt. If Xu Chaoyan hadn't been in front of him, all that water might have splashed onto him.

His face darkened, and he took a deep breath, softening his voice as he comforted his younger sister.

"Second Aunt, if your eyesight is bad, go to town to see a doctor. Don't cause trouble here in broad daylight. Heaven is watching what people do, and you'll get your comeuppance sooner or later."

Liu had already been mistreated here, and then her husband made her suffer again when she got home. She couldn't vent her anger, so she threw the wooden basin on the ground with a bang and started cursing at them.

"You bunch of ungrateful brats, I'm splashing water in my own house, so what? Does it bother you? Heaven sees what people do, and you'll be struck by lightning. If anyone's going to be struck, it'll be your house first! What kind of filthy things dare to yell at me like that? Let me tell you, this isn't over today. You have to pay me for emotional distress. You scared my heart out!"

After saying that, he clutched his chest and wailed, "Husband, husband, come out quickly! Your nephew is trying to drive me crazy. Now that his parents are dead, he wants to bring bad luck to our family. Do you think your family's feng shui is bad? Last year, this kid broke his leg and was half dead. And now, not long after, his parents are gone too. He's just a jinx. There must be something wrong with your family's feng shui."

Uncle Meng, with a bamboo skewer in his mouth, slowly walked out of the house, rubbing his stomach with a lazy look on his face: "What's all the noise about? You're disturbing my sleep. My head is still spinning. You woman are howling like a tigress all day long. Can't you just shut up for a minute? Even if there's something wrong with the feng shui of my Meng family, it's because of your constant yelling."

After yelling, he squinted and stared at Meng Jiuhe, who was not far away, with a dissatisfied look on his face: "Meng Jiuhe, what exactly are you trying to do? Just give up my family's homestead. You have to make a big fuss about this little thing all the way to the village chief. Aren't you ashamed?"

After saying that, he let out a long burp. He kicked Liu's butt: "You lazy bum, you have no sense at all! Why don't you bring me a stool? Can't you see that your own man's legs are aching from standing? It's been decades, and you still have no sense at all. I really don't know why I married a fool like you."

In front of the younger generation, Liu was suddenly scolded by Uncle Meng, which made her feel embarrassed. She usually had a shrewish demeanor, and she would let it go if her husband yelled at her a few times, but today she felt a little humiliated.

She slapped him hard on the forehead: "You bastard, you've had too much to drink, haven't you? You dare to act like a drunkard and hit me? I'll kick that lump of iron of yours to pieces! I've given birth to your children and done all the housework for you, and you treat me like an animal?"

As they were talking, the two started fighting, and Uncle Meng, fueled by alcohol, beat his wife until she screamed.

Xu Chaoyan and the other two looked on with anticipation, while Meng Jiuhe reminded them, "Let's hurry up and go to the village chief's house."

Xu Chaoyan looked like she hadn't had enough, and she clung to his arm, saying coquettishly, "Husband, what's the rush? Let's watch this good show before we leave."

Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. The two were stopped by Meng Taohua, who had been kicked out, after only a few exchanges: "Father, Mother, what are you fighting here for? You're making a spectacle of yourselves for outsiders to watch. Why are you starting to fight amongst yourselves before others have even settled things?"

With disheveled hair and bloodshot eyes, Liu slapped him, saying, "You surnamed Meng, wake up and get what's yours back! I've been beaten for nothing today."

Uncle Meng, sobered up by the slap, pointed at the three of them and said, "Don't bother going to the village chief. It'll only make you look bad. That place was originally given to your father by me. Now that your cousin is getting married, and our family is short of space, we want to take it back. Since you don't want to give it up, I, as your second uncle, won't make things difficult for you. Just take out the silver and buy it. Ten taels of silver, no questions asked."

Meng Jiuxia: "Ten taels of silver? Why don't you just rob someone? You say it's yours, so what proof do you have?"

Uncle Meng staggered a few steps toward them, pointing at her with a mocking look: "You little brat, those trees that grew there back then are older than you, and you still dare to argue with me about these things? Bah, brother, how did I end up with such a stupid girl like you?"

Enraged, Meng Jiuxia grabbed a handful of dirt and threw it at the crowd: "Shameless! You even covet your own brother's things! Do you even want to claim my yard as yours?"

Uncle Meng chuckled twice: "That's not true. I'm not that greedy. What's mine is mine, and what's not mine, I don't care about."

Meng Jiuhe glanced at him, not wanting to say anything more: "Words are meaningless, and saying more is useless. Right now, you come with me to the village chief's house, along with your great-grandfather and several other elders who witnessed the division of the family property between you and your father."

Uncle Meng pointed at him, swaying slightly: "You brat, don't think you can fool me just because you've studied for a few years, huh? When we divided the family property, you were still playing in the mud in the fields, weren't you? All your proof is just talk. If I say it's my family, then it's my family."

Meng Jiuhe took out the yellowed paper from his pocket and waved it in front of him: "Second Uncle, words are not enough. I have evidence. This is the written agreement you and Dad made when you separated the family property. I knew Dad wouldn't do things so carelessly. In the end, I found this piece of evidence. I saw it with the village chief. What else do you have to say?"

Uncle Meng was now completely sober. He shook his head, which was still a bit foggy, and thought hard for a moment. It seemed that when the family divided the property, his eldest brother had indeed written a written agreement.

He said at the time that they were all his own brothers and there was no need to remember them so clearly. His elder brother said that even though they were brothers, they still had to keep clear accounts. It seems that there were also the village chief's and other people's handprints.

He felt a little guilty, and Liu started shouting again: "What do you mean by written agreement? You say it is, so it is. Don't think that just because you're a scholar, you can fool us with a piece of paper. Let me tell you, we're not easily intimidated."

Meng Jiuhe found it impossible to communicate with them any further, so he took Xu Chaoyan's hand and left, saying, "Let's go to the village chief's house first."

After the three left, Liu tidied her hair, and there were several red marks on her face. She cried out in pain.

Meng Taohua wiped the dirt off her face and complained with dissatisfaction, "Dad, really, you hit Mom so hard. Do you think you'll have face if you break her face like this? Next time you want to fight with Mom, can't you find a place where no one can see you? No one can see it."
