Berserk: The Prophet

Chapter 7 First Experience of Killing

"Bang!" "Smack!"

Gambino, wielding a spear and using the end of the shaft as a stick, slammed it into the faces of the two men with a series of blows. Guts was knocked to the ground, and Green was knocked backward, seemingly having his back teeth knocked out.

"Stop dawdling and get to work!"

"Do you want me dead?" Gambino glared at Guts with a furious expression.

Then another blow landed on Green's stomach. He looked furious, as if he was still not satisfied, but he had to conserve his energy on the battlefield.

"Ugh." Green curled up in pain, clutching his stomach, and vomited blood and stomach acid. His left molar fell out of his mouth and onto the ground. He couldn't get up for a while, and his temples throbbed with pain.

"Did you feed all the lessons I taught you to the dogs? You dared to be distracted on the battlefield! I'm so disappointed in you, Green!"

"...Really! Do you two think you can make a living off someone else?" Gambino's forehead was still covered in cold sweat, showing how dangerous the situation had just been.

"If I die, both of you will die here too!!"

"Hey! The next wave is coming!!" In the brief pause of the conversation, the next wave of enemies surged forward, and the surrounding warriors began to reload their crossbows.

Guts wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and looked at Gambino with a stubborn gaze.

"...What was that look?" Gambino seemed annoyed by the look, but the situation on the battlefield didn't allow for much discussion. He turned around, reloaded his crossbow, and prepared to fire.

"If you're unhappy, I can just abandon both of you!!"

"Get up now and do your job on this battlefield!!" Gambino said before turning his gaze to the battlefield.

"Hmph! That bastard Sis really is something, picking up two such troublesome things..." Gambino complained as he fired his gun.

Guts slowly and shakily stood up from the ground, took out his knocked-out right tooth from his mouth, and didn't utter a sound despite the sweat beading on his forehead from the pain, and handed the quiver back to Gambino.

Green, clutching his stomach, staggered to the edge of the trench, picked up his crossbow again, reloaded it, and began firing at the enemy.

"Whoosh!" "Whoosh!" "Whoosh!"

Green used almost all his strength to pull the crossbow string. Because of the pain in his stomach, each time he bent over to nod the string, it was so difficult. His fingers had developed a thin layer of calluses, and there were faint traces of blood. He fired three arrows in a row. One of the arrows pierced a knight's right eye and went through the back of his head. With a scream, the knight fell off his horse.

"Headshot! Deal 138 damage to the opponent. Apprentice Knight has been killed. 320 experience points gained."

"Well done, Green, but those heavily armored knights should shoot their horses in the legs!!" Seeing this, Gambino fired even more enthusiastically at the enemy, always wanting to set a good example for his son.

"They'll fall off their horses and be trampled into mincemeat like that, hahaha."

Gambino shot a heavily armored cavalryman in the leg, laughing wildly as he watched his enemy's flesh and blood fly everywhere. It seemed that his previous frustration had found an outlet. The battlefield always makes people forget everything; only killing is the eternal theme.

The compulsory education he received in his previous life made it impossible for Green to experience the same thrill as Gambino, but this was a battlefield, and he dared not relax his grip for a moment, firing shot after shot.

The warhorses neighed, as if freedom lay beyond the thorns ahead. Despite losing dozens of cavalrymen, they still rushed toward the barricade.

With his spear now in hand, Grenadier unleashed a powerful strike, piercing the waist of the mounted cavalryman. Grenadier, being short, dodged the nearly half-meter-long blade. With Gambino's follow-up strike, the soldier was eliminated. The out-of-control warhorse bolted wildly, only to be rammed by his own cavalry, causing both rider and horse to fall.

Because he had stabbed someone, Green's eyes were bloodshot as he quickly fired a shot into the enemy's unarmored neck, blood splattering onto his face instantly.

If you don't kill the enemy, you'll die! Those behind you will die because of your mercy! Grimm won't give them the chance to harm those he cares about just because of mercy that shouldn't be on the battlefield!!

When blood splattered on his face, Green belatedly felt a chill run through his body, his hands trembling as if he couldn't hold the spear properly. But Green knew that his hands were gripping tightly, and his mind was unusually clear. This surge of adrenaline made all of Green's senses exceptionally sensitive. This was the first time he had killed an enemy at close range.

"Mitland light cavalry has been killed, gaining 160 experience points."

"Well done, Green."

Gambino also dealt with two cavalrymen who had fallen from their horses, and then used his spear to knock down another cavalryman, who clutched his abdomen and groaned in pain as he rolled around.

"Hey! Guts, stop standing there in a daze, grab your sword and give him a quick death. Your brother has already taken the first step before you."

"Uh..."

Having been beaten before, Guts was more nimble than last time and knew when to switch to a long spear.

Seeing that his younger brother had already dared to kill, although he was still a little scared, he wouldn't be willing to fall behind, because he was the older brother!

"Ahhhhh!!"

The brief hesitation was fleeting. He then grabbed the sword beside him with a determined look and stabbed it fiercely into the man's throat. Blood splattered, and tears welled up in the young eyes, but his gaze gradually hardened.

He wouldn't hide behind his younger brother; what kind of protection would that be?!

...............

More than half a month has passed since the last battle. The Midland army abandoned the city and fled. The troops that broke out did not linger in the battle, so Gambino's mercenary army did not suffer heavy losses.

The governor of Midland, cowardly and greedy, broke through the checkpoint at a high cost and fled. Only a hundred or so riders broke through and led the governor westward in defeat. What they did not expect was that Juda had already planned all of this. Two hundred heavy cavalrymen attacked halfway and took the enemy governor's head. The remaining small fry could no longer cause any trouble.

Because of the employer's great victory, this month's wages were not withheld, and all the due bonuses were received.

However, there shouldn't be any wars to fight recently. The wealth plundered from war is enormous for ordinary people, but these people are completely busy using the money for gambling, drinking, eating meat, and finding women.

On a fine, sunny day, Green and Gambino were practicing swordsmanship, sweating profusely.

Gambino was at least at the level of a veteran fighter. Grin had already exhausted a lot of energy just by blocking, and was panting heavily. His shoulders and arms ached terribly from the constant blocking, and it seemed that he would be unable to withstand the next attack.

"Stop just parrying! Go ahead and draw your sword, hahaha."

Gambino pressed forward relentlessly, then lunged forward and delivered a powerful horizontal slash that knocked the sword from Green's hand. He then kicked Green to the ground, where Green's sword was already at his own neck.

"Is that all you've got, kid?"

"Huff, huff, let's do it again!" Despite his throbbing and aching arms, Green stubbornly got up from the ground.

"Haha, what a stubborn child!"

"He's just as stubborn as his brother."

"Yes, those two brothers are really tough; they survived the battlefield..."

The people around them had nothing to do, so they were drinking and eating meat on the grass. Watching the commotion, they seemed to see a reflection of their own childhood, cheering and making a fuss. It was a rare moment of peace.
