Berserk: The Prophet
Chapter 254 The Fall of the "Fire Dragon's Nest" (17)
Seeing the enemy's unwavering offensive, Gurenberdo's eyes sharpened, and he shouted, "Longbowmen, prepare!!"
The archers on the city wall drew their bows taut, ready for battle. As Juda climbed the reinforced ladder and entered the longbowmen's optimal firing range, Gurenbeldo gave the order: "Loose the arrows!"
Immediately, arrows rained down on the enemy like locusts, and screams erupted from below the city walls.
Benedict stood to the side, her fists clenched tightly, her eyes fixed on Gurenberudo, silently praying that the mysterious power would appear soon to help them through this difficult time.
Hikel moved back and forth along the city walls, directing his soldiers to respond flexibly to the enemy's attacks. Sometimes he would have his soldiers use spears to poke the enemies climbing the ladders, and other times he would have people pour boiling oil down onto the city walls.
However, the Judas far outnumbered those of the "Dragon's Nest." Despite suffering considerable losses, some of the Judas managed to scale the walls, where fierce hand-to-hand combat ensued.
Gurenberu immediately brandished his warhammer and charged into the enemy ranks. Each strike carried the immense power of a dragon, instantly sending a large number of enemies flying off the city wall.
Amidst shattered cries and the sound of armor being smashed, the unfortunate soldiers fell to their deaths below the city walls, knocking down other soldiers as well, creating a chaotic scene.
The wounds on Gurunberdo's body reopened due to the violent movements, and blood seeped out of his armor, but he paid no heed and roared, "As long as I'm here, you won't be able to break through here!"
The sounds of gunfire and the smell of burning skin lingered in the Fire Dragon's Nest, a scorching atmosphere unique to the battlefield.
With Gurenbeludo around, no Judas could last three seconds. His warhammer could crush dozens of people in an instant, and his shield could easily push enemies down to the city walls.
The morale of the garrison at the Dragon's Nest soared, and their counterattacks became increasingly effortless. They might die, but as long as Gurenbeldo was there, even in death they would journey with the "Dragon" to the "Heavenly Plain," to drink heartily in the "Hall of the Gods," and to honor their ancestors.
Even the well-defended "Dragon's Nest" will eventually run out of ammunition, making a pure melee battle inevitable.
Gurunberdo had lost count of how many times he had swung his warhammer and how many times he had struggled to lift his shield. Covered in blood, he had not forgotten the predicament he was now in, surrounded by enemies on all sides.
Heikel was wounded and fought her enemies. Her once elegant silver hair was now stained red with blood, and her silver armor was splattered with blood.
Meanwhile, the battlefield and the plans on the other side were left entirely to Waston and Tino. The back of the Fire Dragon's Nest, which had almost no defenses, collapsed under the repeated bombardment of the seven cannons, leaving two gaps in the wall.
"Attack!! Whoever beheads Gurenberudo will be richly rewarded!" With a command from He Kun, the soldiers swarmed forward.
Edward silently followed the army's march. It seemed that Gurenbelud was doomed. Now he only hoped that Hecker would be safe. He had to protect Hecker himself.
Tino and Waston each led a hundred or so cavalrymen to wage guerrilla warfare within the city, feigning defeat to lure the Grand Duke's troops into various fortresses.
However, He Kun always valued his life, so he only ordered his men to pursue the enemy, while he himself stayed in a safe place to wait for his men's reports.
Edward didn't rush to pursue his former subordinates. Looking at the somewhat empty Dragon's Nest, he felt puzzled, as the soldiers who had gone to chase them hadn't returned. He sensed something was amiss, but after glancing at Hokun, who seemed oblivious, he said nothing.
Just then, Tino and Waston lured the Grand Duke's troops into the trap and, as planned, ignited the pre-placed asphalt and explosives. With a crisp explosion, flames shot into the sky.
Immediately afterwards, deafening explosions erupted intermittently from each bastion.
Looking at the various bastions now billowing with smoke, Hikel, her hands aching and weary from the fighting, leaned on her greatsword, and tears streamed down her face. She knew that her loyal subordinates, with whom she had shared many happy times, had likely perished alongside the Grand Duke's army.
As Gurunberdo gazed at the billowing smoke, a strange sense of sorrow washed over him. He didn't understand why this inexplicable emotion was coming from him, but the current situation left him no time to think.
His right hand, constantly wielding the warhammer, was already aching. If it weren't for the numerous bandages binding his severed left arm and shield, he probably wouldn't have been able to lift the shield at all. Every inch of his skin and flesh was enduring pain, and the cold sweat seeping from the pain had seeped through his body beneath his armor. He was merely putting on a brave face.
On the bastion side, the explosions had ceased, but the fire still raged, billowing smoke rising into the sky like a lament for the fallen soldiers. Tino and Waston, covered in dust and blood, supported each other as they led the few survivors out of the flames. They planned to circle back to the city walls and reunite with Gurenbelud for a final stand.
"Hmph, a desperate struggle!" He Kun cursed inwardly. Although he had lost nearly two thousand troops, he did not think it would affect his ability to take down the "Fire Dragon's Nest".
Edward narrowed his eyes as he looked at the overconfident Hokun. Perhaps he could find a way to break the deadlock. However, he would need to find a way to reunite with Gurunberdo.
Taking advantage of his short stature, Baziso wielded his battle axe on the city wall, severely wounding and cutting many Juda soldiers in half at the waist. However, after such a fierce battle, he was exhausted. He had been hacking and slashing incessantly, and was now panting heavily; even his hands were beginning to tremble!
"You brat!" A Juda soldier kicked Bazso to the ground. Just as he was about to be stabbed through the chest, an old soldier saved him, spraying blood all over Bazso's face.
"Hey, are you alright? You've done a great job." The veteran was showing signs of fatigue, but war never stops just because you're tired.
"Waaah... I want to go home, I want to... Boss..."
Hearing Baziso's tearful cries, the veteran patted him on the shoulder and said in a deep voice, "Hang in there, kid! Hanks might be fighting desperately up there too, we can't fall first."
Baziso gritted his teeth, wiping away the tears and blood mingling with his face, gripped his battle axe tightly, and stood up again. He didn't know how much longer he could hold on, but if he didn't swing it, he might be the one dying in the next second...
