Berserk: The Prophet
Chapter 236 The Summit of the Volcano
Green quickly noticed this as well. "What do we do now?"
Abain gritted his teeth and slammed his bow at the pursuers to lighten his load. "Looks like we'll have to fight in close combat. Luke should be here soon. We'll wait until he's past and then counterattack together!" He drew his short sword from his waist, his eyes turning fierce, like a cornered beast, and continued to flee with Green.
Just then, the ground suddenly began to shake violently, like the prelude to an impending volcanic eruption.
Seeing this, Green shouted as he ran, "The volcano is about to erupt! Stop chasing us, okay? We'll all die here if we keep going like this!"
I have to thank him for the weighted long-distance running training in the Fire Dragon's Nest. He ran continuously for nearly five or six miles, and although he was sweating a lot, he didn't even pant heavily.
Hearing Green's shouts, Slade hesitated for a moment, but he was unwilling to let Green and Abain go so easily. "Don't listen to him, keep chasing them!" Slade shouted, though his voice carried a barely perceptible tension.
Green and Abain continued their frantic run, the loose stones beneath their feet constantly shifting, making their pace even more difficult. Suddenly, cracks appeared ahead, from which hot air rose and molten lava flowed.
"Stop!" Aba Ying shouted, and the two of them came to an abrupt halt at the edge of a crack.
At this moment, Slade and the others caught up, and they were also stunned when they saw the crack.
"What do we do now?" one of the shadow warriors asked in a panic, since every Grantan knew about Grant's ancient legend.
Scalding lava continued to gush from underground, gradually spreading towards the group.
"No matter what, I won't go back if I can't deliver! Besides, the target Madwood gave me is just a brat." Slade said through gritted teeth. If he couldn't bring back that brat's head, Madwood would definitely look down on him!
"Are you so obsessed with my head? Now we're all going to die here." Green couldn't help but laugh in anger at Slade's furious expression, even though he had just thrown a lot of stones at the guy and hit the bullseye in his groin.
Slade clenched his fists, said nothing, but his expression remained ferocious, like a wolf that wouldn't give up until it caught its prey.
"If you're scared, then run for your life! I don't need cowards to work for me!"
Slade's words caused his men to exchange bewildered glances, some of them beginning to waver, their eyes revealing fear and hesitation. At that moment, the lava flowed even faster, its scorching heat seeming to engulf everything.
Just as the other Shadow Hands wavered, a giant black wolf charged down the slope of the volcano, its gaping maw instantly tearing the throat of one of the Shadow Hands apart.
Luke arrived just in time, and Abain, seeing this, grabbed his dagger and, together with Luke, fought against the Shadow Hands.
Seeing this, Slade fixed his gaze on Green and charged forward, drawing his spiked scythe.
"Ah!" The long spear had already been used by the unarmed Green, who immediately took a running start and crossed the wide, steaming crevice, continuing his mad dash up the mountain.
The lava flows very slowly, and besides, we're only halfway up the mountain, so there are bound to be some places to put our feet.
Seeing this, Slade didn't hesitate to cross the crevice and relentlessly pursue Green. His eyes held an extraordinary determination; he was determined to capture Green. This wasn't just his mission, but also his way of showing loyalty to his mentor, Madwood!
Greene sprinted along the rugged mountain slope, his strength waning and his heart filled with anxiety. He knew he couldn't let Slade catch him, so he ran while keeping an eye on his surroundings, trying to find something he could use to slow down his pursuers. Suddenly, he spotted a loose boulder ahead and an idea struck him.
Green charged at the boulder with all his might, slamming it down with his shoulder. The boulder slowly rolled toward Slade. Slade dodged to the side, the boulder almost grazing him as it rolled down the hillside, kicking up a cloud of charred rocks and dust.
Green was panting heavily on the hillside when he realized that the boulder hadn't taken Slade away. He quickly scrambled over the rocks and ran to higher ground.
"You brat, don't even think about running away!" Slade grew increasingly angry and sped up.
Meanwhile, the battle between Abain and Luke and the Shadow Hands had reached a fever pitch. Abain's dagger gleamed coldly in the sunlight, and without any worries, he nimbly moved among the Shadow Hands, each swing of his blade carrying a deadly threat.
Luke, with its bravery and agility, kept pouncing on its enemies, and for a time, shouts of battle and screams of agony echoed on the mountainside of the volcano.
Abain naturally noticed Slade chasing Green, how reckless! Lava was flowing continuously from the mountain pass downhill, and it became denser the higher you went.
But now he can only pray that Green can shake off Slade and get away unharmed, since he can't get away right now.
Green continued to run desperately, the constant uphill running had made his legs feel as heavy as lead, but the will to survive was still supporting him.
His heart was pumping at near-critical speed, pounding wildly and powerfully. Blood circulation and adrenaline were being stimulated to their maximum potential, and all his muscles were aching slightly, but he couldn't stop!
Even when the brain is so oxygen-deprived that the mind goes blank, the will to survive keeps shouting within this body.
Despite his extreme physical discomfort, Green struggled to climb the steep slope. His vision began to blur due to insufficient oxygen supply, and he could only continue forward by instinct and the desire to survive, until there was nowhere higher to climb or escape to.
Before he knew it, he had reached the summit of the volcano, his mind blank. Contrary to his expectations, the summit was a flat plain, with only thick smoke rising from the crater in front of him.
The section of the mountain that Green fled up was relatively thick and, after developing some minor cracks, did not continue to collapse. In contrast, the opposite side of the mountain was already filled with lava and had collapsed considerably; compared to that, Green was quite lucky.
Even a brief rest was enough to leave his body feeling utterly exhausted and on the verge of death. After catching his breath, he looked around for cover and staggered to a large rock, where he collapsed to his feet. Sweat had soaked through his clothes.
Slade quickly caught up to the mountaintop, his steps slightly unsteady, but the killing intent in his eyes remained intense. Damn... this kid is too fast.
He angrily threw his wolf-skin helmet to the ground because he was so hot he felt like he was about to dehydrate. Who came up with this bullshit tradition of having to wear a wolf skin no matter when or where?
Green hid behind a large rock, not daring to even breathe. He knew that he was now very close to death.
Slade looked around, not in a hurry. After catching his breath, he slowly approached the large rock, the wolf-tooth scythe in his hand looking even more sinister under the thick smoke.
"Kid, where do you think you can run to? Come out here obediently and I promise you won't die a very painful death." He shouted, his voice echoing on the roaring volcano.
Green had regained some strength. The volcanic ash on the mountaintop was too thick, and every breath he took felt like his lungs were filled with ash, making him want to cough.
He covered his mouth tightly, afraid of making a sound, and his eyes scanned his surroundings rapidly, trying to find another way to escape. But unfortunately, he was already at his wit's end.
Green pulled out the Gambino dagger, a matching crossbow, and 20 throwing knives stored in his spatial storage, ready to become the sixth man.
So what if the other party is an adult? He's a cheater, you know.
Green gripped the dagger tightly with his teeth, his hands quietly nocking the crossbow bolts, his eyes fixed on Slade as he approached through the cracks in the large rock. His heart pounded, but his mind remained unusually calm; years of training and survival instincts honed since his reincarnation were fully unleashed in this moment.
