Berserk: The Prophet
Chapter 232 The Battle of Nowrudkahuatti (4)
"Dick, I'm leaving this to you. If I fail, you all take the troops and flee towards the Dragon's Nest. Gurenbeldo will definitely take you in!" Edward looked at Dick and the others as if he were giving his last instructions.
Dick's face turned pale with anxiety, but his expression was resolute: "Are you kidding me? I will hold this place!"
Even if the Grand Duke's knights don't come after us, there are still the light cavalry of the noble families who support the Grand Duke! They're rushing here in a hurry, they don't have any horses! How could they possibly outrun those light cavalry?
Edward nodded resolutely and led his elite squad in a flanking maneuver, preparing to strike at the Grand Duke.
......
While Edward was about to throw a tantrum, Gurenbeldo had just leisurely finished organizing his troops and was preparing to depart. This time, the accompanying force consisted of the 500-strong Flame Dragon Knights and 500 elite cavalry.
With a warhammer in his right hand and a shield in his left, Gurunberdo, clad in full armor, rode out into battle in his chariot.
The mission is to rescue a lone diplomat nobleman who has fallen into the territory of Judas from the "Dragon's Nest".
Although this operation required bypassing the enemy's frontline base, Chester Fortress, which was extremely dangerous, Gurunberdo wasn't too worried.
Too many complicated things have happened lately. Whether it's the princess or Heiko... Right now, he's happy to go to the battlefield and vent his anger; he can worry about the troubles after the war is over.
Gulenberdo quickly took stock of his men and, following the instructions in the letter delivered by the messenger hawk, headed towards the location indicated in the letter.
Shortly after he led his troops away, Edward's messenger hawk arrived at the empty castle tower; the lord's mansion was already deserted.
The hawk perched on the window of the castle tower, tilted its head, and circled over the Fire Dragon's Nest. Not finding any familiar faces, it followed the trail of the Gurenberdo team to search for them.
Just then, after about half a day, it seemed that Gurunberdo's army had gone quite far. General Kirsten hurriedly arrived.
"The general has already set off," the soldier replied truthfully.
"What? Oh dear, I was really careless!" Kirsten paced back and forth in the room, looking at the contents of the letter, feeling a little anxious.
Even if he believed that Gulunberu would return safely, his soldiers would suffer heavy losses if they were ambushed by Juda!
Kirsten abruptly stopped and ordered his soldiers, "Assemble a thousand men. We're going to the jungle between the Dragon's Nest and Chester Fortress to prepare to escort Gurenberudo back safely." The soldiers obeyed and left, and soon an infantry regiment was assembled.
"General, a thousand elite infantrymen are all here!!" the adjutant reported. On the training ground, everyone was clad in armor, ready for battle.
Just as Kirsten was preparing to lead his infantry regiment swiftly toward their destination, a light cavalryman hurriedly entered the "Dragon's Nest" and found General Kirsten.
"Reporting to the General, the Grand Duke intends to purge the old nobles in the city who oppose him! Although His Excellency Edward has temporarily thwarted the Grand Duke's schemes, the troops are insufficient and the battle is extremely fierce!"
"Please, General Kirsten, hurry to Nowrudkahuatti to provide support!!" The light cavalryman, his face covered in dust and sweat, panted heavily.
Kirsten's expression changed, his fists clenched, and he was caught in a dilemma. On one side was his adopted son, Gurenbelud, who was about to venture into danger; on the other side was Edward, who was under threat in the city, and his close friends from the past...
The adjutant of the Dragon's Nest whispered a reminder: "General, Commander Gurenbeldo is known for his unparalleled bravery; he should be able to handle the dangers along the way. However, Lord Edward's situation is critical. If he doesn't receive timely assistance, Grand Duke Hokun, who is currently at the height of his power in the Duchy of Grant, will certainly not let Gurenbeldo off the hook. Entrusting the back of the 'Dragon's Nest' to the Grand Duke would have unimaginable consequences!!"
Kirsten gritted his teeth and finally made up his mind, "Prepare the horses!!"
Because the Dragon's Nest is located in an extremely strategic and dangerous position, several fast horses are always kept on hand to deliver messages to the capital, Naurudkahuatti, and now they have come in handy.
"I'm going to lead the Royal Guard to support Edward and the others. You... what's your name, Hecker's adjutant?"
"My name is Tino, General." The young man straightened his back and looked at his idol, whom he had admired since childhood, with piercing eyes.
"Very good, Tino, I will temporarily appoint you as the commander of a thousand men in the infantry regiment. The plan is as previously agreed. You must bring Gurenbelud back safely!!"
Tino nodded, his right fist clenched and placed on his left chest, his voice loud and firm: "Yes, General, this humble general will certainly not fail in his mission!"
At this moment, the two fast horses prepared for Kirsten to change horses were also brought over. Kirsten nimbly mounted the horses and led the light cavalry who had come to deliver the message, galloping towards the direction of Nordkahuatti.
Little did he know whether what awaited him was a snare of fate or a glimmer of hope for a miracle.
Tino, upon receiving the order, turned to face the infantry regiment behind him, his eyes cold and authoritative: "Brothers, we shall now set off to meet General Gurenbeldo. Everyone must remain vigilant; there may already be Juda soldiers scouts along the way, and danger lurks everywhere!"
The soldiers shouted in unison, "Obey the commander's orders!"
During the march, Tino felt both nervous and excited. He was nervous because he didn't know what dangers lay ahead, but excited because he had gained General Kirsten's appreciation and been entrusted with such an important task.
—Naurudkahuati—
By the time Kirsten finally received the news and rushed to Norudkahuatti, Edward had already deployed his squad to capture and kill the enemy leader, Hokun.
As Edward led his elite squad stealthily into the alleyway on the side of the battlefield, Hokun was still roaring at the chaotic battle from the rear, urging his soldiers to regroup and attack.
Edward and his companions moved quickly through the narrow alleys, trying to make as little noise as possible to avoid giving away their location.
The battle cries faded into the distance, replaced by the tense breathing and light footsteps of Edward's squad. They circled along the alleyway to a spot not far behind where Hokun was. Edward signaled his men to stop, and cautiously peeked out to observe. He saw Hokun surrounded by several trusted men and knights, pointing and gesturing at the battle ahead, his face contorted with rage.
Edward took a deep breath, gripped his sword tightly, and whispered to his men, "We're going to charge out and break through those knights' lines as quickly as possible to take Hekun's life. Remember, we only have one chance; success or failure hinges on this." His men nodded, their eyes firm and resolute.
At Edward's command, the squad burst out of the alleyway like arrows. The sudden attack caught Hokun's guards off guard, but they quickly reacted. The knights swiftly spurred their horses to block Hokun's path, raising their lances in preparation for battle.
Edward charged at a knight, dodging the thrusting lance, then leaped up and slashed at the knight's arm with his sword. The lance broke in two, and the knight was caught off guard and pulled off his horse.
The other team members also engaged in fierce combat with the enemy, and for a time, the sounds of clashing metal and shouts rang out in this small area.
However, these trusted knights of Hokun were not all ordinary men. They reacted quickly and fought back desperately, causing considerable obstacles to Edward and his men's attack.
The battle reached a stalemate, and every second that was delayed was increasingly disadvantageous to Edward and his men, because once the main force at the front noticed the abnormality at the rear and came back to reinforce, they would be in dire straits.
Just as Edward was becoming increasingly anxious, he suddenly noticed a slight opening in the knight's defense. Seizing the opportunity, he lunged forward, pulled the knight off his horse, and plunged his sword into the knight's throat. He then snatched the lance, and the skilled horseman Edward quickly dismounted and pulled away from the knight's warhorse.
Then, using that momentum, he flashed past the other knights who were still being entangled, turned his horse around, and charged towards Hokun.
Hokun's eyes widened in horror as he frantically reached for his sword, but Edward's lance was already inches away!
