Berserk: The Prophet

Chapter 223 Preparation

Just as the butler was forced to take action, Folda, upon hearing this, immediately broke free and knelt down in front of Edward with a thud.

Edward's eyes widened in shock. He hadn't expected Folda to go to such lengths, which left him with mixed feelings. The scene also startled the butler.

"Let me explain! Nothing happened between me and Gurunberdo last night! We're innocent!"

Edward's lips trembled slightly. Despite his respected mother's flustered explanation, he couldn't completely dispel his doubts. He took a deep breath, as if carefully confirming something, and slowly asked, "Is it really true?"

Folda raised her head, her gaze more open and reckless than usual, looking directly into Edward's eyes. "It's absolutely true, son. You know me, if I really did that kind of thing with Gurenbelud, I wouldn't be here explaining to you now."

Edward: "..." His silence was deafening.

Butler: "......" Well, he'd been watching Folda's ways for years.

After a long silence, Edward finally spoke again: "Alright, I believe you. Mother, please get up and speak first. The most urgent thing right now is to reunite with Grunberdo and the others. The Grand Duke is about to make his move against them! And we ourselves are no longer safe. We must contact General Kirsten and Grunberdo immediately!"

Folda nodded with a sigh of relief. Upon hearing Edward's last sentence, the once shrewd and intelligent former matriarch, who had managed the Halvorsen family to become increasingly powerful, immediately understood their current predicament.

The only way to survive in the Duchy of Grant is to fully support Gurenbeludo in order to create an opportunity for a coup!

Edward made two preparations: one was to send a trusted confidant to General Kirsten, and the other was to use a carrier falcon to deliver the message to the agent operating in the ice-free port.

There were also several empty envelopes bearing only the Halvorsen family seal, which were sent by secret envoys out of the city toward the Dragon's Nest to confuse the public.

“What I’m about to do is too dangerous. We’ve already put ourselves on the opposite side of the Grand Duke. For your safety, I will secretly send someone to escort you to the sailing ship that will allow you to escape the Duchy of Grant should the coup fail.”

Folda shook her head firmly. "I won't leave. I want to face this with you. This is not only about the fate of our family, but also my own choice."

Edward looked at Folda and sighed helplessly, "Your presence here will only become my weakness."

A hint of stubbornness flashed in Folda's eyes. "I know I might be a burden to you, but I also have my value. I can use my family's connections to gather intelligence for you."

Edward pondered for a moment, knowing full well that once Folda made up her mind, it would be difficult to change it. "But I can't protect you."

“I don’t need you to protect me all the time. I can handle many things on my own. After managing the family for so many years, I’m not a pampered weak woman,” Fulda said, puffing out her chest.

Looking at Folda's red-rimmed eyes, Edward was still worried about her. Images of the torture instruments in the Grand Duke's underground chamber and the gruesome deaths of those girls flashed through his mind, and he couldn't help but tremble.

“Absolutely not, I can’t leave you here alone! Don’t try to be strong. Even if the Grand Duke is unpopular, no one can protect you under the rule of tyranny.”

Folda stepped forward and grasped Edward's hand tightly. "But don't forget, our family has been rooted in the Duchy for a long time. Even if the Grand Duke is all-powerful, he still has to be wary of us. Besides, if I stay, I can share more of the risks with you. If we really encounter danger, I won't let you escape alone."

Edward gazed into Folda's resolute eyes, a complex mix of emotions welling up within him. On one hand, he admired Folda's courage; on the other hand, he feared losing her.

Just as Edward was hesitating, Folda continued, "It's alright. Before Gurenbeludo completely falls from power, he won't dare to do anything to a divorced woman like me."

"After all, my current status is that of the city lord's wife, bestowed upon me by him personally. He wouldn't be so foolish as to attack me, a pawn, before his plan has been fully realized."

Edward slowly relaxed his furrowed brow, knowing that Folda was right. "Alright, but you must be careful; your safety is always the most important thing."

Folda smiled with relief. "Don't worry, I'll take care of everything. I hired a lot of good men this morning, and we'll increase the patrols."

"Well, I'll go out for a bit. Mother, you should start preparing to win over those nobles who are willing to support Gurenberudo."

"it is good."

"If anything troublesome happens, Uncle Lu Wei, remember to send me a message," Edward instructed one by one.

“No problem, Master.” The old butler named Lu Wei nodded in agreement.

Edward hurried out of the house, not forgetting his promise to Hickel that morning. He needed to tell Glenn Belluddo and Hickel first, no matter what.

For him, it would be best if Hickel were willing to elope with him and leave the Duchy of Grant, and not interfere in this matter. But he knew that Hickel would definitely get involved in this matter concerning Gurenbeludo's life.

Forget it, I can't think about it too much. If all else fails, he can just find a way to get them out of there by boat.

However, they all underestimated the extent of Grand Duke Hokun's madness. Just when Fulda thought she was temporarily safe, Hokun secretly dispatched his shadow men.

.........

Just as He Kun slumped onto the stool, his tears dried on his ugly face.

Mad Wuxiu walked in coldly. He had heard the conversation between father and son clearly. He would be very disappointed if he could not destroy the country and see He Kun drive his only son, who could still be considered healthy, insane.

Mad Wuxiu stood in front of He Kun, his face expressionless.

Seeing you in so much pain makes me feel really good.

Benevolence's seemingly calm eyes held a deep-seated, irreconcilable hatred, but He Kun was completely unaware of it under the dim light.

He Kun gave a bitter smile. "I thought I had everything under control, but I never expected to end up like this."

That's your own fault! A father and son scheming against each other seems like a pretty good option.

Madwood thought viciously, but still bowed as usual and offered advice to the Duke: "Your Majesty, we can't delay any longer. The time agreed upon with Juda is approaching!"

He Kun remained silent, simply lost in thought.

Seeing this, Madwood was secretly anxious, but he remained respectful on the surface. "Your Highness, if we miss this opportunity, all our previous efforts will be in vain. Juda will not let this go."

He Kun slowly raised his head, his eyes filled with exhaustion and resentment. "What can I do now that things have come to this? Even if I go to the appointment, I'll just be at their mercy."

"Your Excellency, do not lose heart. There may still be a chance." Madwood narrowed his eyes slightly, quickly calculating in his mind.

"A turning point? Hmph." He Kun laughed self-deprecatingly.

"...We can also force Prince Edward to help you!" Madwood's eyes flashed with a hint of malice.

"Besides, if we just let His Highness leave like this, all our previous and subsequent plans will be exposed to Gulunberu!"

"Those die-hard nobles of the Grand Duchy will absolutely not let you off the hook, Your Highness!!"

The thought of the faces of those stubborn nobles who wanted to frame him immediately made He Kun frown and fall into deep thought.

After a while, as if he had made up his mind, he stood up and said, "You're right, we can't let Edward leave like this!"

"...Then, how are you going to coerce him?"

Seeing that the Grand Duke had taken the bait, Matt Wutt whispered his plan in his ear.

.........

Early this morning, Gurunberudo left the capital, Naurudkahuatti, in his private carriage for the "Fire Palace," where he was serving as Benedict's guard.

Should he take her back to the "Dragon's Nest"? Or should he just leave her in the "Fire Palace"? Gurenberdo couldn't make up his mind; he had almost lost her.

If it weren't for Hickel and Hanks being there, Gullenberger couldn't imagine what unbearable consequences might have occurred.
