Berserk: The Prophet
Chapter 2 Memories
...............
Green wasn't born without parents. His mother died from a major artery hemorrhage the moment he was born. His maternal grandmother, who had cared for him since he was three, was also getting weaker and eventually passed away when he was three. His paternal grandparents had long since passed away, leaving his father to care for him. However, this man had long lost the will to live. He drank heavily every day and would beat and scold a child who could barely speak. As a result, Green didn't dare to cry out when other children were wailing, because if he did, he would only be kicked away. This man had no idea how to take care of children. A day without beatings or scolding was a good day for Green.
His aunt, who lived next door, couldn't bear to see him like this, so she would often take care of him when his father wasn't home. Occasionally, his aunt's children would read the leftover fairy tale books. His favorite was a book called "Grimm's Fairy Tales." The colorful print on it had a special attraction for Grimm, who had never seen a picture book before. If he didn't know a word, he would collect them and ask his aunt.
"You like this storybook so much? Since your parents haven't had time to name you yet, how about you call yourself Grimm as a nickname?"
His aunt's face had long since faded from Green's memory, but he always remembered her gentle voice clearly, and the name Green accompanied him throughout his life.
Whenever a difficult night fell, he would open some classic fairy tales and read them repeatedly, falling asleep with tears in his eyes. This helped him through the most helpless period. Most importantly, it was his aunt's care that helped him. Otherwise, he might have died on some unknown night. In this way, he lived with his father for a year in a daze.
But these hard-working days didn't last long; my father died from excessive drinking.
The successive deaths of his family members made Green an unfortunate child. The neighbors also pointed out that he was a person who would only bring disaster. Although his aunt felt sorry for his background, she also had a child to raise. Thus, Green, who was only four years old, was sent to an orphanage.
Perhaps due to the deep shadows of his childhood, Green didn't like playing with other children, which led to him being bullied by them. Since they were all children without homes, and with the teachers absent and unwilling to discipline them carefully, the bullying became increasingly severe.
Until a boy slapped him, the burning sensation on his face made Green feel like something inside him was about to ignite, something called dignity was burning fiercely.
Before this, only his father had ever slapped him, cursing him: "Why don't you just die?! Aren't you a boy?! Why don't you die in place of your mother? You damned beast! It's all your fault!"
"What are you crying for? Are you even a man? Stand up! Don't you have any self-respect?!"
For the first time, young Green stood up in the orphanage. His clear eyes revealed a distinct anger for the first time; it was the first time he had experienced an emotion called anger.
The other party seemed to have never seen the submissive Green stand up before, and was still in a daze.
"What's wrong with you, kid...?"
Bang! !
Green angrily punched the boy who had slapped him in the nose, causing blood to gush out.
Why?! I didn't do anything! Why is everyone bullying me?!
The boy slumped to the ground and wiped his nose with his palm. Seeing the blood on his hand, he became enraged and pushed the younger Green to the ground. Green was not to be outdone, and the two began to fight. Finally, the teacher, who arrived late, pulled them apart.
After a few words and a brief glance at what had happened, the two were put in solitary confinement and locked in a dark storeroom where brooms and mops were kept.
Green huddled in the dark, damp warehouse, his fists clenched, his eyes red with anger, hot tears streaming down his cheeks. "Why? I've never provoked anyone! Why does everyone have to mess with me?!"
A four-year-old child was locked in a dark, damp warehouse. Any other child might have been trembling with fear, but not Green. Apart from the dried tears on his cheeks, the look in his eyes had changed. He had come to a realization: since he had already given so much of his life, he had to live well. That was the only way to repay his mother who had died because of him and all the misfortunes. He had to be strong!
After that day, Green gradually became stronger. What did it matter if the older children bullied the younger ones in the orphanage? What did it matter if a boy got beaten a few times? If anyone dared to bully him, he would fight back even if he only had one set of teeth left. From then on, no one bothered to provoke Green anymore. But Green was still all alone and didn't like to associate with other children. When he left the orphanage and entered junior high and high school, he was eating a lot. Green was always hungry at every meal. Unfortunately, he was short of money. In desperation, he asked every shop in the cafeteria and stayed to help out at a noodle shop. He was provided with meals.
Occasionally, I would use the few hundred yuan my aunt sent me to buy some stationery and a Nokia phone that cost over a hundred yuan and could make calls. Because I developed quickly in junior high school and grew to be about 1.8 meters tall, and I liked to exercise in my spare time, junior high school was peaceful.
He went on to high school, and when he graduated from junior high, the noodle shop owner treated Green to a nice meal and gave him three thousand yuan.
"You kid, no matter what, you have to work hard to support yourself. Remember to tell me when you get into university. You've helped me a lot these past three years, thank you for your hard work. Use this money for your high school textbooks."
Green lived up to expectations and entered the city's top high school. Just like in junior high, he worked in the cafeteria. Later, he met his girlfriend in his senior year of high school. Rather than a girlfriend, she was more like a friend who encouraged each other. Together, they went through that difficult but very meaningful time.
After graduating from high school, Green received an admission letter from medical school. Her aunt also found her. After many years, time had left some wrinkles on her face. Her parents hadn't left her much, only eight thousand yuan. The building where she lived as a child was confiscated because no one was repaying the loan, and the house in her hometown was also mortgaged and confiscated. Her father's long-term alcoholism made the family's already meager savings even worse. The eight thousand yuan she still had was probably a result of her aunt's financial assistance.
Having a meal with his aunt warmed Green's heart, who hadn't been close to relatives for a long time. Unfortunately, all the warm moments in Green's life were short-lived. His aunt passed away, and he made plans for his future tuition fees by going to work on a nearby construction site. Although it was hard work, the income was quite considerable. Perhaps it was the daily training that helped him adapt to the life of carrying bricks.
Unfortunately, a life that can only support oneself cannot bring happiness to anyone else, and he does not believe that he will be happy, because he is just a person who brings misfortune.
...............
The sound of water vibrated in my ears along with the woman's voice, faint and indistinct, seemingly a series of English words.
"Another war is brewing..."
"Yes, we have to move again..."
"Get your luggage ready!"
"Those damn Judas!!"
The woman's panicked voice mingled with the noise of others. Green felt as if he were on a small boat caught in a thunderstorm, as if he could sense the unease of his upbringer. Green kicked his foot nervously, but the place was obviously more crowded than before. It seemed as if he had kicked something. As soon as he kicked, something punched him in the stomach. Green couldn't make a sound, clutching his stomach and curling up, falling back into an unconscious sleep.
