Berserk: The Prophet
Chapter 140 The Death of Ali (3)
"Bang!!"
The moment the runestone touched the ground, a blinding white light stung the soldiers' eyes, causing temporary blindness. What followed was a torrent of crimson and scorching hellfire emanating from the runestone.
Before the crossbowmen in the center could even scream, they were engulfed by the flames. Their armor was melted into molten iron in the blink of an eye, and their flesh and blood were completely evaporated.
"Ahhhhh!!"
The dazzling white light naturally stimulated Green's retina. When he opened his eyes again, he found that the demon had already started a massacre of the archers. The soldiers who did not have time to react were still neatly cut in half at the waist, while the demon's flesh and wings were growing at a visible speed.
A terrifying and powerful, bloodthirsty and violent being—it's simply something no human could possibly contend with!
"Bang!" "Bang bang!"
Fear instantly overwhelmed him, especially with the sight of blood-stained flesh and severed limbs scattered everywhere, making the demon's already ferocious face appear even more terrifying.
The crossbowmen, now fully awake, were so terrified by the scene that not one of them dared to step forward. The tips of their swords trembled. They didn't have the mental fortitude of knights; they were just soldiers accustomed to staying away from hand-to-hand combat on the battlefield.
"Sniff"
The demon seemed to have caught a whiff of intense blood in the air, and its crimson eyes noticed Grimm, who was still lying on the ground.
"Prophecy..." (Devil's language)
A wave of dizziness washed over Green, for the whispers from the demon's mouth were beyond human comprehension and could not be uttered by a human. The syllables sounded as if they had been uttered by Cent before, and their meaning gradually surfaced in his mind.
...'prophecy'.
Green was startled. Did the heretics who followed the Eredar already know his identity?
I recalled the ancient book I had once perused in Pence City. It was an old legend that said demons could foresee parts of the future. Could this demon already know his fate?
The aura of fear emanating from the demon enveloped Green. He tried to get up and run away, but his badly injured body wouldn't obey him.
As the demon drew ever closer, Green succumbed to uncontrollable despair. He realized he might not be able to escape this nightmare, for those scarlet eyes had locked onto him, and simply looking at them felt like falling into an abyss.
Just then, a familiar voice seemed to echo in Green's ears, an ancient and angry voice, and the totem on his chest seemed to gradually ignite into a raging fire.
"Stand up! You mustn't be afraid!" The voice seemed to give Green strength, and he struggled to prop himself up.
Grimm stared at the demon, a surge of courage rising within him. As his body gradually regained sensation, just before the demon's flaming blade struck, his two-handed sword, made of ordinary iron, blocked the attack. His muscles tensed, his hands tingling. The clash of their powers was evenly matched, but it was clear that Grimm was gradually losing ground. The scorching heat of the flames was even about to burn his skin.
Green gritted his teeth and persevered with all his might, sweat soaking through the entire lining of his armor.
Seeing this, the demon revealed an even more cruel smile.
"Heh, struggle on, kid."
It increased the pressure in its hand, and the flaming blade even made Grimm's hands tremble.
Green felt as if his arm was about to break, but he still refused to give up. Even though the flames had burned his neck, he used all his strength to hold on, and he was even ready to close his eyes and accept his fate.
Just then, the sound of a sharp blade piercing through flesh reached his ears. A greatsword pierced through the demon's body, and the pressure on his hands suddenly lessened, making Grimm feel relieved.
"...Maggots? You're asking for it!"
It was Ali's greatsword that pierced through the demon, and the demon seemed to look at the newcomer with a slight surprise. He was just a mortal wriggling around, yet he had pierced through his body!
The two immediately engaged in fierce combat. Ali desperately swung his greatsword to block several attacks, and with each clash, a new notch appeared on the greatsword, glowing red from the flames.
"Qiang——!"
The sword shattered, and the flaming blade sliced through Ali's armor, sending the boy flying backward as he was kicked by the demon.
"bass!"
While the demon and Ali were locked in combat, Grimm regained his strength and seized the opportunity to launch a sneak attack on the scarlet-skinned monster from behind.
"Huh, you didn't run away, kid!?"
Unexpectedly, the demon dodged the fatal blow by sidestepping. The greatsword only grazed the demon's side skin, and flames instantly wrapped around Grin's greatsword. Grin had no choice but to change tactics and switch from offense to defense.
Perhaps because of the sound he had just heard, Green gradually lost the sensation of pain in his body and focused intently on fighting the demon.
The sword in the demon's hand was no ordinary weapon. Green had memorized the entire exchange between the demon and Ali, and he absolutely could not take that weapon's attack head-on, or his weapon would be ruined!
Green retreated into the wreckage of the battlefield behind him as he fought; his armor was too cumbersome. This was a high-stakes gamble.
"Oh!"
Green used the demon's fiery blade to pierce through the upper body armor, while the mithril inner garment was left with only a very shallow sword mark amidst the sparks.
Green immediately tore off the wreckage of his heavy armor, glancing out of the corner of his eye at the black steel hand cannon that had just fallen to the ground. The demon's blade slashed down at him, but Green, with his agility, rolled to the ground and picked up the hand cannon, equipping it on his left arm as a shield.
"All you can do is run away, you brat!"
What a nimble brat! He was just a hair's breadth away from being killed! The demon clicked his tongue in amazement, seemingly tired of this chase game, and slashed at Grin, who hadn't fully stood up yet, with his flaming sword.
After picking up his shield, Green was clearly confident in the fight. He raised his left arm to block the blow. Without the restraint of his heavy armor, Green even found an opportunity to retaliate. The battle became increasingly fierce, with neither side giving an inch.
However, the demon's power was ultimately too great, and Grimm gradually felt overwhelmed. Just as he was pondering a countermeasure, the demon suddenly launched a fatal attack, leaving Grimm with no way to avoid it.
At the critical moment, Ali stepped forward and used his body to block the demon's attack. The demon's blade pierced Ali's body, causing him excruciating pain, but he still clung tightly to the demon's arm.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Green swung his sword and struck the demon's vital point, piercing its heart.
The demon let out a painful roar and took a few steps back, while Ali also fell to the ground. Green rushed over to check on his injuries.
"Ali!!"
