NBA's King of Talking
Chapter 46 Success on the First Attempt
The referees at the dunk contest announced the order of play: Budinger of the Rockets dunked first, Jia Fei second, Paul George third, and Derrick Williams fourth.
Jia Fei glanced at the stands. There were quite a few celebrities in attendance for the dunk contest today. Just from the dunking world alone, there were many famous figures: Larry Nance, the first dunk champion; Dr. J, a 76ers legend; Wilkins, the "Human Highlight Film"; Spud Webber; Brad Barry, "White Can Fly"; Drexler, "The Glide"; Nate Robinson, a three-time dunk champion; and Kobe Bryant, the youngest dunk champion…
Seeing Kobe, Jia Fei suddenly felt a little unreal. Even though he wasn't his idol, he was still very moved.
Budinger has taken off his training shorts and is preparing for his first dunk.
This guy looks like a white person; someone who doesn't know him might mistake him for an athletically challenged white guy. But he was named San Diego Volleyball Player of the Year three times in high school and was named All-American Volleyball Player of the Year in 2006. Jumping ability is more important in volleyball than in basketball.
Budinger had an assistant for his first dunk, and he had the assistant stand under the basket. Judging from his posture, he intended to fly over the assistant's head for the dunk.
Bardinger started, and sure enough, he flew over the head of his assistant, and succeeded on his first try!
Applause erupted from the crowd. This dunk perfectly showcased Budinger's outstanding vertical jumping ability. Although this type of dunk, flying over the head of the assistant, has been used many times in the past, it does not mean that this dunk is easy.
“I’m going up!” Jia Fei smiled slightly at Derek Williams, who was standing next to him.
Derek Williams was surprised that Jia Fei smiled at him, and he immediately scoffed, "Don't make sure it won't go in!"
Jia Fei continued to smile, "I'll succeed on my first try, you should worry about yourself!" After saying that, he took off his pants and prepared to go on stage.
The cheers from the crowd continued... Everyone was eager to see what kind of dunks Jia Fei, as an Asian, could pull off. Some fans had seen the day's top ten plays, and judging from his performance in actual games, his jumping ability and hang time were impressive. The question was, what kind of dunks would he be able to pull off in the dunk contest?
Not only are the fans looking forward to it, but Jia Fei's three opponents are also very curious about what kind of dunking moves he can make.
Wearing the Thunder's home jersey number 3, Jia Fei held a basketball in his hand, trying to regulate his breathing. He had successfully completed the dunk he was about to perform many times in practice, but the venue and environment were different. There weren't as many spectators in the practice court, so he had to ignore these external distractions and immerse himself in the world of performing the dunk!
He needs to finish it in one go!
While it's not a big deal if he can't complete it in one go, he needs to do it in one go to win the championship. Doing it multiple times will negatively impact the fans' perception; even if your dunk is more difficult than others, you'll still be at a disadvantage in the voting.
Jia Fei walked to the bottom right corner and then stood still.
The host said, "How will Jia Fei, player number 3 from OKC, complete his dunk from this position? Let's wait and see!"
Jia Fei adjusted his breathing, and he started moving, dribbling the ball. Suddenly, he slammed the ball onto the floor in front of him with both hands!
The ball bounced into the air due to its elasticity! And he rushed towards where the ball was falling!
When the ball fell to within 50 centimeters of the basket, Jia Fei jumped on one foot, launching himself into the air. Using the momentum of gliding, he caught the ball with both hands in mid-air, then smoothly switched the ball between his legs and slammed it home!
During this process, Jia Fei's body glided from the right side of the basket to the left side. From the moment he jumped to the moment he completed the dunk, he was in the air the entire time. The distance he glided and the length of time he stayed in the air were breathtaking.
After successfully dunking, Jia Fei landed gently, just like a gymnast landing after completing the uneven bars or pommel horse – steady, graceful, and composed.
Applause immediately erupted from the audience. Although the dunk wasn't particularly novel—a between-the-legs dunk had appeared in many dunk contests before—it was truly the first time Jia Fei had used such a tossing motion, moving the rim from one side to the other.
On the sidelines, Clyde Drexler said to Dr. J Irving next to him, "This Asian kid from OKC is making a very difficult dunk. If he jumps a little too early or a little too late, he might not be able to complete the dunk."
Dr. J nodded in agreement: "It's obvious he's practiced a lot in the gym and is very bold to use it in a game. This move has a very high failure rate."
Both dunking legends praised Jia Fei's dunk, saying it was very difficult, even more so than Budinger's.
Jia Fei was overjoyed. He felt that he had performed even better tonight than he had in the training hall. This feeling was fantastic and laid a solid foundation for his next two dunks.
Jia Fei returned to the sidelines, and the prepared pickled peppers made their appearance!
Derrick Williams also saw Jia Fei's dunk, which was indeed spectacular, but he refused to admit that the guy's dunk was spectacular, turning his face away and not bothering to look at him with his own eyes.
Jia Fei walked over to him and teased, "Praise me if you want, I can take it!"
"Who said I wanted to praise you?" Derek Williams, as if he'd been stepped on, quickly clarified.
"So, do you think my dunk was good? Did you complete it in one go?" Jia Fei asked with an innocent look on his face.
“You were just lucky!” Derek Williams said with certainty.
"Well... I wish you good luck too!" Jia Fei's smile was very sweet.
“I will beat you!” Derek Williams said through gritted teeth.
On the court at that moment, Paul George was attempting his first dunk. He asked his teammate Hibbert and another utility player for help. His first move was to dunk over both of them, but Hibbert was too tall, and he failed twice. On the third attempt, after Hibbert slightly lowered his head, he touched his shoulder, made the leap, and successfully dunked the ball.
Although he ultimately succeeded, Paul George's dunk was not as successful as Budinger's or Jia Fei's in terms of success rate or the impact of the performance.
When it was Derrick Williams' turn to enter the court, he didn't go straight onto the court, but instead rode over on a motorcycle from the other side of the court.
His move ignited the crowd, and everyone was eagerly anticipating what spectacular and innovative dunk he would perform.
As it turned out, Derrick Williams was simply trying to dunk over a motorcycle, and he tried three times before finally succeeding on the third attempt.
