NBA's King of Talking
Chapter 44 All-Star Weekend
Kemba Walker's suggestion coincided with Jia Fei's thoughts. Carter's windmill dunk combined power, fluidity, and hang time. Among all the dunkers in the NBA, he had never seen any other dunker whose windmill dunk was as visually appealing as Carter's.
He can achieve the same height and hang time as Carter, but it's clear that there's a significant gap between him and this top dunker known as "UFO," both in core strength and upper and lower limb strength. This gap makes it impossible for him to significantly improve his strength in just a few days.
So we still need to have a clear understanding of ourselves. If we can't learn from Carter, we can learn from Dr. Jordan!
For the next period of time, Jia Fei didn't have any playing opportunities, so he began preparing his moves for the dunk contest. There were three moves in total; he planned to make two without an assistant and one with an assistant.
On February 20th, after the Thunder defeated the Nuggets at home, Westbrook approached him in the locker room with a grin and said, "Jay, you're going to the dunk contest, take me with you!"
"Bring you along? What do you mean?" Jia Fei was a little confused. If I bring you along, how am I supposed to jump?
Westbrook quickly explained, "If you need someone to help you, I can be that role!" He patted his chest, appearing extremely enthusiastic.
Jia Fei readily agreed: "Okay, Russ, I've thought of the moves, I'll need your help then!"
"Don't mention it, I'd be happy to help, hahaha..." Westbrook laughed happily, like a child who had received a lollipop.
Jia Fei sighed that Westbrook's optimism and lack of guile made him a perfect friend—warm and sincere.
That evening, Jia Fei watched all the dunk contest videos from the first one in 1984 to 2011, focusing mainly on the dunking moves and the final scores. He needed to gain some inspiration, which would help him design his moves. Although there were many contests, there weren't actually many dunking moves in each one, so he finished watching quickly.
After watching, Jia Fei thought that repeating those classic dunks wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The idea of complete innovation was a false proposition. Either it was "old wine in new bottles," with the same moves but in a slightly novel form, or it was about adding some new elements, such as props like cars or motorcycles, but the dunking was still the same old move.
Repeating classic dunks can evoke nostalgia in fans, and if the atmosphere is created well, it can make these repetitive moves more appealing, and there's nothing to be ashamed of.
However, you can only do one nostalgic action at most; if you do too many, people won't appreciate it, and it might even have a negative effect.
On the 22nd, Jia Fei arrived at the training ground early and began practicing dunks. After training ended that day, Westbrook stayed behind to practice dunks with him for a while and gave him a lot of advice.
In this way, Jia Fei's three dunking moves have taken shape, and all he needs to do now is practice more.
On February 23, after defeating the Lakers at home, the Thunder finished their games for the month. They currently hold a 27-7 record, ranking second in the Western Conference, behind only the Spurs.
The All-Star Weekend is just around the corner!
Reggie Jackson said to Jia Fei on the evening of the 23rd: "Jia, I envy you so much. I also want to go to All-Star Weekend."
“Then let’s go together!” Jia Fei said.
“But it would be strange to go to a project I’m not participating in!” Reggie seemed a little embarrassed.
"Ugh, what's so strange about that? A lot of people who don't even have competitions are still going!" Jia Fei was speechless. Why did Reggie have so many ideas?
"Forget it, I'd better not go. I'll just go home!" Reggie finally decided not to go.
On the afternoon of February 24, Jia Fei, Coach Cheeks, and Du Wei and his two young stars boarded a plane in Oklahoma City to travel to Olado to participate in the 2012 All-Star Game.
Orlando, a city in central Florida, is situated in a swampy area and is one of the world's leading leisure and tourism destinations. It boasts Disney World, one of the world's largest theme parks, on par with Disneyland in Los Angeles. SeaWorld, the largest in the United States, is also located in Orlando. Notably, "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," a collaboration between Warner Bros. and Universal Studios, is situated within the two film studios' 787-acre theme park in Orlando.
This was Jia Fei's first time in Orlando. Although it wasn't as bustling as Los Angeles, it had its own unique characteristics.
The NBA All-Star Weekend is like an official carnival for the NBA, a huge event, and the All-Star game is the main course of this feast.
Upon arriving in Orlando, Jia Fei immediately contacted Kemba Walker, and the two met at the player's private team.
“Jay, I think after this weekend I should call you the ‘Slam Dunk King’!” Kemba Walker joked.
"Keep a low profile, keep a low profile, it's still far from over!" Jia Fei remained quite modest. Being a favorite is always a recipe for disaster, and thankfully he wasn't one. Currently, an online poll has been launched by fans, and the overwhelming favorite to win this year's Slam Dunk Contest is Paul George from the Indiana Pacers.
Jia Fei didn't think Paige was that great. He would only feel hopeless if a player like LaVine or Carter appeared in this year's Slam Dunk Contest. But whether it was Paige, a bust second overall pick, or a product of the Rockets, he wasn't afraid.
Let me show you how Allen Iverson, who is 201cm tall, dunks! Let me show you how a yellow-skinned dunk champion is born!
Jia Fei may have been modest, but he was passionate inside. He was determined to win this dunk contest!
That evening, Jia Fei and Kemba Walker dined together at the hotel's Western restaurant. They hadn't eaten together in a long time and had so much to say.
Jia Fei isn't usually a talkative person, but he'd talked a lot that night. Kemba Walker, on the other hand, was a chatterbox, talking nonstop as if stopping him would kill him.
At 10 a.m. on the 25th, the first event of All-Star Weekend began at the new Amway Center in Orlando: the Rising Stars Challenge.
The Rising Stars Challenge featured a team led by Charles Barkley against a team led by Shaquille O'Neal.
Kemba Walker was on O'Neal's team, while Coach Cheeks was the head coach of Barkley's team.
Jia Fei didn't know which team to support, so he simply didn't support either side and just watched the show as a bystander. As a rookie, he was naturally envious of their participation in the Rising Stars Challenge. He wanted to participate too, but unfortunately, he hadn't had much playing time or good performance this season, so he had no chance of being selected. Jeremy Lin, who was of the same race as him, was added to this year's Rising Stars Challenge thanks to his recent "Linsanity" performance.
