NBA's King of Talking

Chapter 13: Roasting the Top Student

Derrick Williams was unstoppable in college basketball thanks to his talent, so he wasn't serious about his studies, since it wasn't his livelihood anyway. His shooting has always been a weakness, which is why many draft analysts believed he might not be suited for the NBA. His physique would be perfectly fine for a power forward in the NCAA, but in the NBA, he might be the kind of player who's neither here nor there, leading to an awkward role.

Jia Fei unleashed his verbal skills, roasting Derrick Williams. He felt no discomfort whatsoever; in fact, he suddenly found it quite enjoyable. He realized that trash-talking could be so fun, and he thought that perhaps he could actually gain some anger points.

Back to the game, Jia Fei and his team used the same tactics, but this time when the ball was passed to him, he didn't choose to drive and pass, but instead went straight for a three-pointer...

Derrick Williams was clearly unprepared; he stood frozen, like a dummy (Who am I? Where am I?), watching helplessly as Jia Fei calmly launched a three-pointer…

That ball went in easily!

Jia Fei's team is leading 9-0, having had a dream start!

The NBA general managers, coaches, and scouts watching from the sidelines were all somewhat incredulous. On paper, Derrick Williams' team should have had a clear advantage. However, the game felt like a well-organized and mature team, while the opposing team, composed of talented rookies, looked like a disorganized rabble.

Sometimes, that's how games are. 1+1 doesn't necessarily equal more than 2. Basketball is a team sport. Unless you have extraordinary individual skills and can dominate the game, the teamwork, the compatibility of players' functions, and the performance on the court are all very important and can change the course of the game.

Like Klay Thompson, you only remember him missing three-pointers in yesterday's shooting test, but don't forget, he's a natural sharpshooter. These kinds of shooters rarely miss consecutive shots. When they get open, their accuracy is extremely high.

Derrick Williams glanced at Jia Fei in surprise. He hadn't expected this unknown guy to be so calm and collected, accurately reading the situation on the court and not mechanically repeating the previous plays, catching him off guard.

"Don't look at me. I know I'm more handsome than you. There's nothing to envy!" Jia Fei said this and went back to defense, leaving Derrick Williams completely bewildered.

When Derrick Williams finally realized what was happening, he was furious. Damn it, he'd been mocked for being ugly by some yellow-skinned guy... You see, he'd always been very confident in his looks, and he thought his beastly appearance would make him unique in the future NBA... This was too much to bear, so he decided to get his revenge on offense and crush this pretty boy!

Knight dribbled over, and Derrick Williams came over, desperately wanting the ball.

Knight had no choice but to pass the ball to them.

Derrick Williams, holding the ball, faced Jia Fei and gritted his teeth, uttering, "I'll show you the strength of an NBA prospective number one draft pick!" He then launched a triple threat!

Unexpectedly, a miraculous scene unfolded. Jia Fei was not deterred by his three threats. Instead, he took a step back and winked at him, his meaning crystal clear: Go ahead and shoot me if you dare!

Derrick Williams was furious. He never expected that he, a potential number one draft pick, would be looked down upon to this extent by an Asian player who was predicted to be no more than 60th in the draft. At this moment, his teammates were also watching him, and he was now in a dilemma—he couldn't shoot, and he couldn't not shoot.

If he doesn't shoot, wouldn't that be telling everyone present that he has no basketball skills and no ability? If he does shoot and misses, he'll lose face.

In the midst of hesitation, Kemba Walker suddenly appeared and, with lightning speed, snatched the racket from Derrick Williams' hand.

Jia Fei reacted incredibly quickly, grabbing the ball and passing it to Kemba Walker for an immediate counterattack.

The opposing team's defense recovered quickly, leaving little opportunity for a fast break.

Kemba Walker wasn't in a hurry; he calmly slowed down and built his position.

Derrick Williams was so frustrated he was about to explode. Not only had he been shot in the face by Jia Fei, but this guy was also messing with his mentality, causing him to miss shots and make mistakes. He was practically committing crimes on the court.

Kemba Walker's jump shot after a screen missed.

Biyombo finished the play and handed it to Knight to push forward.

Derrick Williams wanted the ball again, but this time Knight didn't pass it to him. Instead, he passed it to Tristan Thompson in the low post, who drew a foul from Oriak as he drove hard to the basket.

One of two free throws made, and finally a point...

Kemba Walker dribbled over and started the attack from the top of the key.

Jia Fei circled around from near the baseline and used Art Mayok's screen to receive the ball.

After receiving the ball, he made a quick cut and went in; Derrick Williams simply couldn't catch him!

Jia Fei drove to the basket, drew the defense, and then passed the ball to his teammate Art Mayok, who caught the ball and immediately made a gorilla-style two-handed dunk!

The score is now 11:1, with the difference widening to double digits.

"Great pass, Ja!" Art Mayork and Ja Fei high-fived happily. Their teamwork was flawless, while the opposing team, though full of talent, was too unfamiliar with each other, their offense was too simplistic, basically just simple ball passing followed by shots, or isolation plays. Coupled with their shooting weaknesses and Derrick Williams' mentality issues, the game became very passive.

Knight dribbled the ball over here, and the opposing defense tightened up their defense, basically defending within the paint area, completely ignoring the shots of Biyombo, Tristan Thompson, and Derrick Williams.

These three players simply couldn't make their shots. The more they missed, the more the opponent tightened their defense, making them more impatient and causing them to miss even more, creating a vicious cycle. Even though Biyombo and Tristan Thompson are good at grabbing offensive rebounds, their skills are too rough. Even if they get the offensive rebounds, they can't put them in the basket, drawing fouls and often only making one of two free throws, making their scoring extremely slow.

Throughout the game, Derrick Williams, who was projected to be a much higher draft pick, was constantly pressured and played as if they were the underdogs, the weaker team on paper.

In the end, Jia Fei and his team won the five-on-five training match by a margin of more than 20 points.

贾飞全场得到12分6个篮板7次助攻2个抢断1个盖帽,且没有出现一次失误,表现全面且高效。

His opponent, the top draft pick Derrick Williams, had a terrible performance. Although he also scored 12 points, he only made two field goals and committed a game-high six turnovers, making him look incredibly embarrassing.
