Su Muya lay on the bed, her face pale, her eyes tightly closed, looking extremely weak. But she secretly opened her eyes a crack, observing Su Daya's reaction. Su Daya's face was filled with worry and anxiety. She paced back and forth, occasionally going to the bedside to touch Su Muya's forehead and softly calling her name.
Doctor Li wrote the prescription, glancing up occasionally at Su Muya's condition. Once finished, he handed it to a maidservant beside him, instructing, "Quickly fetch the medicine and prepare it; the sooner the better." The maidservant took the prescription and ran out into the rain.
Old Madam Lin sat in her chair, her face grim, her gaze piercing as she surveyed the trembling servants in the courtyard. She began her interrogation, her tone authoritative and icy. "Speak! Who brewed this tea?"
Everyone looked at each other, not daring to utter a sound. Xiao Cui, the maid in charge of boiling water, stepped forward tremblingly and stammered, "Reporting...reporting to the old lady, it was...it was this servant who boiled the water..."
"Is the tea being made? Who made it?" Old Madam Lin stared sharply at Xiao Cui, her tone becoming even more stern.
Xiao Cui's face grew even paler, and her body began to tremble slightly. She stammered, "It was...it was this servant..."
"Why are you so nervous?" Old Madam Lin keenly noticed Xiao Cui's unusual behavior and became even more suspicious.
Xiao Cui's legs went weak with fright, and she almost collapsed to her knees. She stammered, "This servant...this servant wasn't...not nervous..."
"Tell me the truth!" Old Madam Lin slammed her hand on the table and shouted angrily.
Xiao Cui trembled with fear and finally broke down. She knelt on the ground with a thud, crying out, "Madam, spare me! This servant... this servant was acting under orders..."
"Who instructed you?" Old Madam Lin pressed.
Xiao Cui hesitated for a moment, but finally confessed who had instructed her—Hongmei. “It was…it was Miss Hongmei…”
Upon hearing this, Madam Lin's face darkened further. She immediately ordered someone to bring Hongmei up.
When Hongmei was brought before Madam Lin, she remained calm, her head held high, her gaze firm, showing no fear. "Madam, I am innocent."
"Injustice? Someone has testified that you instructed Xiao Cui to poison the tea. What else do you have to say?" Old Madam Lin questioned sternly.
Hongmei took a deep breath and said calmly, "Madam, you are wise. I have never done such a thing. I am loyal to the Second Young Lady. How could I possibly harm her?"
Just then, Su Muya, who had been lying in bed, suddenly spoke weakly: "Grandmother, Hongmei could not have done such a thing, there must be a mistake..." She struggled to sit up, but Su Daya held her down.
As soon as Su Muya finished speaking, a maid's exclamation came from outside the door: "Found it! Found this in Hongmei's room!" The maid held a paper packet containing some white powder. The edges of the packet were worn, as if it had been hidden for a long time. Doctor Li took the packet, examined it closely, and then gently smelled it. His expression was grave as he said, "This...this is Heartbreak Powder!" Upon hearing this, Old Madam Lin was shocked. The prayer beads in her hand fell to the ground with a sharp "clatter," which sounded particularly jarring in the quiet room. "Heartbreak Powder?" she repeated, trembling. Her eyes flashed, and she turned sharply to Hongmei, shouting angrily, "Hongmei, what else do you have to say?"
Hongmei was stunned. Looking at the packet of poison, she felt as if a thousand ants were crawling inside her. She knew that she hadn't put the poison in her mouth; Su Muya had secretly placed it in her room. She wanted to explain, but found her throat dry and unable to utter a single word.
Su Daya immediately pounced over, grabbed Hongmei by the collar, and angrily shouted, "You vicious girl! How could you do such a thing to my daughter! I'll kill you!" Her eyes were filled with anger and hatred, as if she wanted to devour Hongmei alive.
Madam Lin's face was extremely grim. She slammed her cane heavily on the ground, the sound sharp and piercing. "Guards! Drag this wicked maid away! Give her twenty lashes!"
Hongmei was lifted up by a burly old woman and led towards the door. She struggled and cried out, "I'm innocent! I didn't do it! I didn't do it!" Her eyes were filled with fear and despair, but no one paid her any attention. The crisp sound of a wooden board striking the floor and Hongmei's piercing cries came from outside, but all of this was shattered by the heavy rain.
Su Muya lay on the bed, her face pale, but a smug glint flashed in her eyes. She closed her eyes, a cold smile playing on her lips. Hongmei was nothing more than a pawn in Su Muya's hands, a pawn that could be discarded at any time.
The rain outside the window was gradually subsiding, but the "storm" for the Lin family had only just begun...
After Dr. Li left, Su Daya hugged Su Muya tightly, her eyes filled with worry and anxiety. She kept whispering Su Muya's name in her ear, hoping to wake her. Old Madam Lin also paced back and forth nearby, her brows furrowed with concern.
Just as everyone was growing anxious, Su Muya suddenly spoke, "Doctor...doctor..." Her voice was weak, but loud enough for everyone present to hear. Old Madam Lin and Su Daya rushed to the bedside almost simultaneously, asking in unison, "What's wrong? Muya, don't be afraid, we're here..."
Su Muya slowly opened her eyes, a hint of weakness in them. She said haltingly, "I...I want some water..." As soon as she finished speaking, a maid rushed out and brought her a cup of warm water. Su Muya leaned back on the bed, took a few sips of water, and then weakly lay back down.
After the maid took the tea away, Old Madam Lin suddenly said, "Doctor Li, is the poison in this tea a poison that breaks the heart?" Her tone was urgent, and her eyes were full of anxiety. Doctor Li bowed and replied, "Reporting to Old Madam, it is indeed a poison that breaks the heart."
"Broken Heart Powder, isn't that a deadly poison?" Old Madam Lin asked gravely, her brows furrowed.
“That’s right.” Doctor Li nodded in response. “The poison that the Second Miss was afflicted with was indeed the Heartbreak Powder. But strangely, the toxicity is not very strong…” As he spoke, he took a packet of powder from his medicine box and handed it to Old Madam Lin. “This is the antidote powder. Just take one packet.”
"Not very toxic?" Old Madam Lin wondered, taking the powder and examining it carefully. Just then, a maid's exclamation came from outside the door: "Found it! Found this in Hongmei's room!" Old Madam Lin was shocked, dropping her prayer beads to the ground with a crisp sound. Without bothering to pick them up, she rushed to the window, pushed it open, and looked outside.
