A murderous aura suddenly arose within the inn. Amidst the flashing blades, Murong Xuewei reacted swiftly, flicking her long sleeves to send several silver needles flying, striking the pressure points of two assassins.
"Kill!" The burly leader gave the order, and more assassins leaped down from the building.
"Protect Miss!" The guards quickly formed a defensive formation. Liuli and Xiaocui flanked Murong Xuewei on either side.
An assassin, wielding a knife, aimed straight for Murong Xuewei's face. Her soft, glass sword coiled around the blade like a serpent, pulling the assassin off balance and causing him to stumble. Murong Xuewei seized the opportunity, sweeping her jade flute across the man's throat.
"Your Majesty, watch out to your right!" Xiao Cui exclaimed. An assassin leaped from the table, his longsword thrusting straight forward. Murong Xuewei dodged to the side, instinctively pulling a chair to shield herself. With a "bang," the sword pierced the back of the chair.
"Protect the back!" Murong Xuewei commanded as she pulled a silver chain from her sleeve and precisely wrapped it around the wrist of an assassin.
Seeing the opportunity, Liuli immediately stepped forward, her soft sword flashing, forcing back two attacking enemies. "These people..." she said while parrying, "their skills aren't those of ordinary assassins!"
Suddenly, a flying knife whistled through the air, aiming straight for Murong Xuewei's back. "Miss!" A guard leaped in front of her, his chest instantly staining red with blood.
"A-Zuo!" Murong Xuewei helped the fallen guard up, a hint of pain flashing in her eyes.
A-Zuo grabbed Murong Xuewei's hand: "Your Majesty... go quickly... they... are coming for you..." After saying that, he breathed his last.
"Damn it!" Xiao Cui shouted angrily, slamming the sachet in her hand to the ground. A cloud of pink smoke immediately filled the air.
"Hold your breath!" Murong Xuewei shouted as she pulled Liuli and Xiaocui toward the backyard to break through. Several guards fought desperately to cover them, but were cut down one by one by the assassins.
"Go through the back door!" Murong Xuewei had just finished speaking when another team of assassins poured in through the back door.
"Your Majesty, let me handle this!" Liuli leaped forward, her soft sword transforming into a silver flash. Amidst the clanging of weapons, she clashed with three assassins.
Seeing this, Xiao Cui hurriedly took out another sachet from her bosom: "Sister Liuli, close your eyes!" After saying that, she sprinkled the lime powder from the sachet onto the assassin.
Taking advantage of the assassins' distraction, Murong Xuewei leaped forward and struck several of them on pressure points. Liuli also seized the opportunity to sever the tendons in the wrists of two others.
"There are ropes on the back wall!" a guard shouted, but was stabbed through the heart the instant he finished speaking.
"Come with me!" Murong Xuewei grabbed Liuli and Xiaocui and ran wildly towards the backyard. The shouts of battle behind them grew closer and closer.
As Liuli ran to the courtyard wall, she was about to throw out the grappling hook when suddenly an arrow came flying through the air!
"Watch out!" Murong Xuewei pulled Liuli behind her, and at the same time, she raised her right hand, and the silver chain accurately wrapped around the archer's wrist. By the moonlight, she could see the person's attire, and her eyes narrowed.
"Your Majesty, it's the attire of the Nanzhao Kingdom!" Liuli exclaimed.
Murong Xuewei sneered, "So that's how it is." She suddenly exerted her strength, pulling the archer off balance, and said to Liuli and Xiaocui, "Get ready, I'll jump on three!"
"One!" Murong Xuewei shook the silver chain in her hand.
"Two!" Liuli and Xiaocui gripped the hook rope tightly.
"three!"
Using the grappling hooks, the three leaped over the courtyard wall. Upon landing, Murong Xuewei released several more hidden weapons, forcing back the pursuing assassins.
"Run!" Murong Xuewei, leading the few remaining guards, fled into the mountains under the cover of night. The sounds of pursuit faded into the distance, but everyone knew this was just the beginning.
“Your Majesty, our people…” Liuli looked back, her voice choked with emotion.
Murong Xuewei's eyes flashed with a cold light: "No matter who they are, I will definitely get my revenge."
Inside the villa, moonlight streamed through the dilapidated window frames, casting dappled shadows on the floor. In a corner, Xiao Cui huddled in a ball, her hands tightly clutching the blood-stained hem of her clothes, tears silently streaming down her face.
After treating her wounds, Murong Xuewei's gaze fell on Xiao Cui. The girl's slightly trembling back reminded her of herself many years ago, when she too felt helpless and lost. She sighed softly.
"Xiao Cui," Murong Xuewei called softly, her voice unusually gentle.
Xiao Cui suddenly looked up, hurriedly wiped away her tears, and stood up, but almost fell because of the sudden movement: "Your...Your Majesty. Your injury..."
“I’m fine,” Murong Xuewei interrupted her, her tone turning serious. “You don’t belong here. Have Liuli give you some travel money, and you should leave.”
"No!" Xiao Cui rushed forward and knelt down, clutching Murong Xue Wei's clothes tightly with both hands, tears streaming down her face. "Please, Your Highness, don't send Xiao Cui away! If it weren't for Your Highness, Xiao Cui would have been sold to that kind of place long ago. Your Highness saved my life, so it should belong to you!"
Liuli, watching from the side, felt a pang of heartache and was about to step forward to help Xiaocui up when she saw the girl kowtow heavily. A muffled "bang" startled her, causing her to gasp.
"You silly child!" Murong Xuewei frowned. "You saw it today too, what it means to follow me. Those people are all desperate criminals, they could..."
"Xiao Cui isn't afraid of death!" Xiao Cui raised her head, a red mark already appearing on her forehead from hitting it, but she seemed oblivious. "Xiao Cui is just afraid that Her Majesty will abandon me! Just now at the inn, those people had swords at my throat, but I wasn't afraid. I'm only afraid..." She choked back a sob, "...that I won't be able to save Her Majesty."
“Your Highness,” Liuli said softly from the side, her eyes pleading, “you’ve seen Xiao Cui’s performance these past few days. Although she’s young, she’s quick-witted. And…” She walked to Xiao Cui’s side and gently helped her up, “look how decisive she was at the inn just now, and how timely she was in using that sleeping potion.”
Murong Xuewei looked at Liuli, raising an eyebrow slightly: "Even you're going to plead for her?"
Liuli pursed her lips: "This servant just feels that Xiao Cui..." She paused, as if choosing her words carefully, "...her eyes are very similar to mine back then."
These words seemed to touch something deep within Murong Xuewei's heart. She looked down at Xiao Cui, who was still kneeling on the ground. The girl's eyes were clear and firm, and even her tear-streaked face could not hide her determination.
"Your Majesty!" Xiao Cui suddenly kowtowed again. "Xiao Cui swears that this life belongs to Your Majesty! If Your Majesty tells Xiao Cui to go east, Xiao Cui will never go west; if Your Majesty tells Xiao Cui to live, Xiao Cui will never die; if Your Majesty tells Xiao Cui to die, Xiao Cui will never live!" After saying that, she raised her head and looked at Murong Xuewei with burning eyes.
Under the moonlight, the girl's eyes were pure and resolute, reminding Murong Xuewei of Liuli from many years ago. She sighed softly and reached out to wipe away the tears on Xiaocui's face: "Are you really sure? Following me won't just lead to situations like today; there will be many more life-or-death moments."
"Xiao Cui has thought it through!" Xiao Cui grasped Murong Xuewei's hand, her voice firm. "Even if I die, Xiao Cui will die by Your Majesty's side!"
"Get up." Murong Xuewei helped Xiao Cui up, gently brushing the dust off her knees, her expression softening. "Since you insist on staying, remember your vow today. I, Murong Xuewei, have never taken in many people in my life. Now that I've taken you in, you are mine, understand?"
Xiao Cui stopped crying and smiled, nodding repeatedly: "Xiao Cui will certainly not let Your Majesty down!"
Liuli, standing to the side, also showed a relieved smile, but quickly suppressed it again: "Your Majesty, the skill of those assassins just now..."
Murong Xuewei gazed at the night outside the window, her eyes growing cold. "Heal your injuries first. Since these people know our whereabouts, they'll be back soon." She turned to look at Xiao Cui and Liu Li, a chilling glint in her eyes. "But next time, we'll show them who the hunter is and who the prey is."
