Gu Ye sneered, "Just as we entered the military camp, a fire suddenly broke out. General Xin, don't you think this is more like an attempt to drive my wife and me away?"

Upon hearing this, Xin You's face instantly turned ashen.

Xin You glared fiercely at Gu Ye, gritting her teeth as she said, "Gu Ye! What exactly are you trying to say?"

Seeing this, Murong Xuewei quickly intervened to smooth things over: "Generals, please calm down. The military camp is on fire, and putting it out is the most important thing. How about this: General Xin, take half of the troops to fight the fire, while General Gu, take the other half to guard the perimeter and prevent anyone from taking advantage of the chaos."

Xin You and Gu Ye exchanged a glance and finally nodded in agreement with Murong Xuewei's suggestion.

Thus, Xin You led his men to rush to the military camp, while Gu Ye led the remaining troops to set up defenses on the outer perimeter.

Murong Xuewei followed Gu Ye, but her mind was racing.

"Who do you think started this fire?" Murong Xuewei asked in a low voice.

Gu Ye frowned. "It's hard to say. It could be that Xin You orchestrated it himself, or someone else might be trying to muddy the waters."

Murong Xuewei seemed thoughtful. "Whoever it is, they're probably related to what we're investigating."

"By the way, did you find out anything from what you asked earlier?"

Murong Xuewei shook her head. "Not yet. Before I could ask, Xin You arrived."

"What should we do then?" Gu Ye's furrowed brows showed how frustrated he was.

Murong Xuewei suddenly remembered what the village chief had said about the soldier's parents. "Since we can't get any information from the military camp, why don't we start with his parents and see if we can find out anything?"

When Murong Xuewei was talking to the soldier earlier, she noticed that he seemed somewhat moved when she mentioned his parents. Perhaps this could be a breakthrough.

The two made a quick decision and decided to go to the soldier's parents' house again. They would make another trip.

As night deepened, Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye rode swiftly along the path leading to the neighboring village. The moonlight, like water, shone on their tense faces, reflecting the determination and resolve in their eyes.

"Xuewei, do you think that old couple might know something?" Gu Ye asked in a low voice, his eyes constantly scanning the surroundings warily.

Murong Xuewei gently shook her head. "It's hard to say. But in any case, this is our only clue." There was a hint of tension in her voice.

Her memories from her past life told her that every step could be a deadly trap.

The two soon arrived at a dilapidated mud house. This was the home of Chen Da's wife's family, and it looked no different from any other farmhouse.

Gu Ye and Murong Xuewei exchanged a glance, nodded in tacit agreement, and then dismounted together and headed towards the door.

Just as Gu Ye was about to knock on the door, a suppressed sob suddenly came from inside. Startled, the two of them immediately pushed open the slightly ajar wooden door.

The room was dark and damp, with a musty smell wafting through the air. By the dim candlelight, they saw an elderly couple working. The old man was whittling something with a sickle, while the old woman was mending clothes with a needle and thread. As soon as they saw Gu Ye arrive, they immediately knelt on the ground, trembling all over.

"My lord, spare our lives!" the old man kowtowed, trembling. "We really didn't know!"

Murong Xuewei's heart tightened; the elderly couple seemed to already know they were coming.

Murong Xuewei asked softly, "Old folks, why are you so afraid? We mean no harm."

The old woman raised her wrinkled face, her eyes brimming with tears, and looked at Murong Xuewei. "Madam, our son is a good child! He would never harm anyone!"

Gu Ye frowned. "Your son? The one who serves in the military?"

Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye exchanged a glance. It seemed that someone had already come before them.

The elderly couple nodded repeatedly, the old man choking back tears, "Yes, sir. Our son has always been sensible. He joined the army to earn money for the family. How could he possibly do such a thing?"

Murong Xuewei knelt down and gently comforted them, "Grandpa, we didn't say what your son did. We just want to ask, do you know how Chen Da died?"

Upon hearing this, the old woman paused for a moment, then shook her head and said, "We really don't know. Chen Da was always a good-for-nothing, who knows how he..." At this point, she began to sob again.

Seeing this, Gu Ye knew that he probably wouldn't be able to get any useful information out of the two old men.

Gu Ye was about to tell Murong Xuewei to leave when she suddenly asked, "What about your son? Has he come back recently?"

The old man and woman exchanged a glance, a flicker of panic in their eyes. The old man stammered, "He...he came back once. But he left quickly, saying he was busy with military affairs."

A glint flashed in Murong Xuewei's eyes; she keenly noticed the elderly couple's unusual reaction. But she didn't press further. Instead, she took a silver ingot from her sleeve and gently placed it on the table.

"Thank you for your cooperation, sir. Consider this money as compensation for the trouble we caused you," Murong Xuewei said gently, while giving Gu Ye a wink.

Gu Ye understood and cupped his hands in farewell, saying, "In that case, we'll take our leave. If you remember anything, you can always come to the General's Mansion to find us."

The two men turned and left, leaving the elderly couple kneeling on the ground, looking at the silver on the table with complicated expressions.

Stepping out of the mud house, Murong Xuewei whispered to Gu Ye, "Do you think they were telling the truth?"

Gu Ye shook his head. "I'm afraid not. Their reaction was too panicked; they're clearly hiding something."

Murong Xuewei seemed thoughtful. "It seems we still need to start with that soldier."

Gu Ye nodded in agreement, then hesitated for a moment, "However, the military camp is a mixed bag; if we go there today, we might alert them."

A sly glint flashed in Murong Xuewei's eyes. "That depends on how we get in."

Gu Ye looked at Murong Xuewei's cunning little face and asked, "You... what idea do you have now?"

Murong Xuewei smiled playfully, "I'm afraid we'll need to trouble someone with this."

Gu Ye was somewhat puzzled, "Ask someone? Who?"

“Nangong Yifeng,” Murong Xuewei said, tilting her head.

Gu Ye stared at Murong Xuewei in surprise, then said with a hint of jealousy, "He's just a prisoner I captured, what use could he be!"

"You wouldn't believe it! Don't let Nangong Yifeng's prince status fool you; he spends most of his time mingling in the streets. If you want to get information out of someone like that, he's the perfect person."

After agreeing on the terms, Murong Xuewei and Gu Ye did not linger.

The two rode back to the general's mansion, discussing their plan to enter the military camp in hushed tones the entire way. The night wind howled, as if playing the prelude to an impending storm.
