Chapter 426 Press Conference
What questions will the media ask? How should I respond? What can I say? What bottom lines must I uphold?
Her eyes were bloodshot, and her whole body exuded a suppressed fighting spirit, like a mother beast facing a predicament but determined to protect her cubs to the death.
As dawn broke, Gu Yinshen changed into his most ordinary dark gray suit, his hands trembling slightly as he tied his tie.
He stood in front of the mirror for ten minutes before finally bowing his head and whispering, "Mengmeng, no matter what the outcome, Daddy will give you a real identity today."
The atmosphere inside the auditorium was heavy and somber. Seating was limited, with only about twenty core media outlets present. Every reporter signed the highest level of confidentiality agreement before entering, and even their personal equipment underwent multiple security checks.
Shortly afterward, the lights went out and then came back on.
Gu Yinshen walked steadily onto the podium alone.
He was without an assistant, and there was no attempt to conceal his presence. He stood under the spotlight, his figure ramrod straight, his expression calm yet carrying an imperceptible weariness and heaviness.
Xie Yumin sat quietly in the corner seat of the first row.
She wore a dark blue dress, her fingers clenched into fists, her lips pressed into a thin line, her body leaning slightly forward, gazing intently at him—the man she least wanted to believe in, yet had to believe in at least once in her life.
Gu Yinshen stood in the center of the podium, tall and elegant, his dark gray suit contrasting calmly with the corporate logo behind him, a symbol of Gu's authority and reputation. He offered no initial pleasantries or thanks, as if he had long been prepared to expose himself to the public eye.
He looked at the reporters' solemn expressions as they waited, and slowly began to speak. His voice, coming through the microphone, was calm and clear, yet carried an undeniable weight:
"Ladies and gentlemen, today's emergency press conference is to clarify the many false rumors surrounding my daughter Gu Meng recently, and also to fulfill my responsibilities as a father and the head of the Gu family."
He uttered the words "my daughter" with particular weight. His voice was low and steady, yet it struck everyone's hearts like a heavy hammer.
After a brief pause, he raised his eyes, his gaze calm yet sharp, fixed ahead as if trying to pierce through the screen and see the young, innocent face in the safe house. His voice was slightly low and hoarse, but without the slightest hesitation:
"First of all, I want to solemnly clarify that Gu Meng is not an adopted child of mine, Gu Yinshen. She is my biological daughter."
As soon as the words were spoken, a deafening barrage of camera shutters filled the hall. The reporters' expressions changed drastically, their faces showing shock. Some looked up in disbelief, while others were already frantically typing words like "shocking," "biological daughter," and "secrets of a wealthy family" onto their keyboards.
Ignoring the surging shock, Gu Yinshen raised his hand to signal for silence. His expression was calm, his speech slow, but each word was as clear as a blade:
"Her mother is Ms. Xie Yumin."
As soon as those words were spoken, the spotlight silently turned to the audience.
In the very corner of the audience, in the first row, Xie Yumin slowly stood up, facing all the glaring cameras. She wore a simple dark blue dress, her face serene. The lights cast a thin glow on her face, but couldn't hide the tiny tear glistening at the corner of her eye.
She stood tall, her shoulders trembling slightly, but she never bowed her head in fear. Her gaze was resolute, like a sharp blade piercing through the wind and snow.
Gu Yinshen continued: "For the past few years, I chose to conceal this fact. My original intention was to protect my daughter out of a father's most instinctive desire to grow up in a relatively peaceful environment away from the public eye, free from gossip and unnecessary attention and harm. I naively thought that building high walls would keep out the wind and rain."
As he spoke, his eyes dimmed for a moment, and a trace of weariness seemed to appear at the corner of his eye. He closed his eyes briefly, and when he opened them again, there was a hint of regret in his bloodshot eyes.
“But I was wrong. My concealment and my escape not only failed to protect her, but also caused her and her mother to suffer more harm, suspicion and slander that they should not have had. This completely went against my original intention.”
He lowered his voice as he spoke. Then, his gaze fell on Xie Yumin, and he said, word by word, "I bear full responsibility for this. I offer my deepest apologies to my daughter Gu Meng, to her mother Ms. Xie Yumin, and to everyone who cares about Gu Meng."
His hands trembled slightly, but he leaned forward from the podium without hesitation and bowed deeply.
You can hear the needle drop on site.
Xie Yumin's eyes filled with tears. She bit her lip, trying not to cry out loud in front of everyone. But the tears still streamed down her face uncontrollably, silently, yet like a tide washing away her sorrows.
Gu Yinshen straightened up and spoke again, his voice more firm and steady than ever: "From today onwards, I will no longer hide."
"As Mengmeng's father, I promise that, firstly, I will do everything in my power to provide her with the best medical care, living environment, and educational resources so that she can grow up healthily in love and sunshine; secondly, I will spare no effort to protect her privacy and safety, and anyone who tries to harm her will face the most severe legal consequences from the Gu family and myself."
His voice paused, then he looked at Xie Yumin, gazing once more into her still moist but no longer evasive eyes:
"Third, I respect and appreciate everything Mengmeng's mother has done. In the future, I will try my best to make up for past mistakes, and work with her to create a stable and complete environment for Mengmeng's growth, based on her best interests."
Another burst of flashes from the audience, but he remained unfazed and continued:
"At the same time, Gu's Group has commissioned a law firm to initiate full legal proceedings against individuals and organizations that have recently used this matter to maliciously attack, spread rumors, and damage the reputation of Gu's Group and the rights and interests of Mengmeng. We will never tolerate such behavior."
Before the reporters could react, one reporter shouted, "Mr. Gu, why is this only being made public now?" "How do you explain your previous statement?" "Was Ms. Xie forced to participate?"
Just as Gu Yinshen was about to speak, Xie Yumin stepped forward.
She walked slowly, but each step was firm as iron. She reached the edge of the podium, standing a step away from Gu Yinshen, picked up the microphone, and spoke in a gentle yet penetrating voice:
"I am Xie Yumin, Mengmeng's mother."
She surveyed the audience below, her gaze clear and firm, without any hesitation:
"I understand that everyone has many questions. Mr. Gu's statement today was his personal decision, and it is also the best choice we can make in order to protect Mengmeng together."
Her voice choked slightly, but she quickly regained her composure: "The past is complicated, but at this moment, I just want to say that I support all the promises Mr. Gu has made as Mengmeng's father."
Then she paused, looked at the camera lens, her gaze soft yet unwavering:
