EROS [Zerg]
Chapter 227 Jealousy and Hatred
Carit, his face sour, clutched his personal belongings and the newly received letter of appointment. To think Afdero would actually make him Lucarissa's assistant—he was utterly shameless!
His position at the Imperial Academy of Science and Technology was as Kowe's assistant. Because Kowe held a military rank, Karit's status was equivalent to that of an assistant to a general.
Now Afro actually made him work as an assistant to a lieutenant colonel, and because Carit didn't have military status, he wasn't even considered an assistant.
Carit knew that Afro was deliberately messing with him. Now that Lucarissa was being outdone by Afro, he must be feeling resentful.
Carit felt that being assigned to be Lucarissa's assistant would definitely make him a target: "Damn female insect!"
As a sub-female, Carit disliked both female and male insects equally, but as his social status rose, he began to dislike all insects of lower and higher status equally.
To some extent, Carit is an extremely rare sub-female in Zerg society who can view all Zerg except herself as equals.
But now, he finds himself unable to maintain the same attitude as before.
Afro is truly the most annoying bug in the world!
Upon arriving at Lucarissa's office, after giving a curt self-introduction to the lieutenant colonel, Carit was surprised to find that Lucarissa did not react with the hostility or sarcastic remarks he had expected. Instead, his words carried a hint of tentative respect.
"What kind of bewitching potion did Aphrodite give you?" Carit sneered through his nose.
Lucarissa had not expected Carrit to react this way. He tentatively said, "The Colonel has brought us a very precious gift."
Carit made no attempt to hide his surprise; suddenly he remembered what Afdero had asked him to deliver.
What's inside the box?
Lucarissa thought Carit was joking with him:
"Don't joke around, Your Excellency. You sent the gift yourself; how could you not know?"
“I didn’t open it.” Carit’s gaze instantly sharpened, all traces of his previous nonchalance vanished.
“FBL-6.” Lucarissa looked at Carit with a mixture of inquiry and suspicion.
Carit's gaze made it no exaggeration for him to guess that Carit's identity was far more than just an ordinary sub-female assistant brought by Afdero.
The sheer aura that could make the surrounding insects sense something was wrong with just a simple change in expression was definitely not something an ordinary sub-female could possess.
Carit frowned, seemingly not understanding Afdero's actions, but then he seemed to realize something, and his face instantly darkened.
"Afudro! What exactly do you want?!"
Carit almost angrily pushed open Afro's office door.
A dark gun hole was pressed against his head.
"you!"
Carit saw the wicked smile on Afdero's face and gritted his teeth, shutting his mouth.
“Face reality, Carit.” Afdero pressed the muzzle of his gun against the female’s cheek: “You’re just someone Kowe threw at me to play with.”
“Here you must listen to me and submit to me. Once those female insects outside who like to fawn over the powerful and bully the weak find out about our origins, they will be dissatisfied. They can’t touch me, a female insect colonel, so they will take their anger out on you. With just a little inquiry, they will know that you are the most notorious sub-female in the highest military academy of the insect race.”
"Guess what they'll do to you? There's a lot of black market activity in the border war zone, no one's going to save you."
"Do you think that by any means necessary you can climb up the ranks and get rid of the discrimination that female insects have against sub-females? No matter how hateful Shandons is to Kowe, in his eyes Shandons is someone you can never compare to."
Carit's nerves were jolted by the name Afdero had uttered. Ignoring the gun pointed at him, he grabbed the female insect's arm with his claws: "What do you know?!"
"What are you afraid of knowing?" Afro pulled the trigger, the silenced laser gun piercing through the sharp claws that Karit was gripping his sleeve. He gave Karit a gentle smile and returned the question to him.
Evans told him some of the things about Santons, which he found very interesting.
Carit's head was buzzing, and the pain in his body neutralized the agony of fear, which made him take another serious look at Afdero. He suddenly remembered Santons' face.
Insect droppings, they really do look like insect droppings!
Speaking of which, Shandons was Karit's senior. The year Karit entered the First Military Academy of the Insect Star Empire from the barren Seventh Star System was the same year Shandons graduated.
As an outstanding graduate, Santons even pinned school badges on representatives of outstanding freshmen. Carret was an outstanding freshman at the time, and his first medal came from that time, although he never received another medal afterward.
But at that time, the two insects had little interaction, and to Carit, Santons was just an enviable female insect.
Carit's academic performance at school has always been among the best of the sub-female students, but compared to female insects, she seems to have some inherent disadvantages.
As the perennial runner-up in his major, Carit hated Rosetta, the female insect who consistently held the top spot.
Because the Imperial Academy of Science only allocates one spot per relevant major. Only the top student in their major each year can get this opportunity.
Carit knew very well that if he didn't get this opportunity, his chances of staying in the First Star System were slim.
In the First Galaxy, land is incredibly valuable. Even if he used all his star coins to rent a place and find a job, he wouldn't last a month. Even if he found a job, he would have to pack up and leave before he even got paid. The First Galaxy doesn't allow homeless insects to sleep on the floor.
Carit's hatred for Rosetta wasn't just because he couldn't catch up in terms of grades, but also because Rosetta was a gifted female insect.
Carit had to work long hours to make ends meet and earn money, while Rosetta, with her talent for insects and slightly better family background, could easily obtain what Carit could not get no matter how hard he tried.
One day, Carit, who was working part-time outside of school rules, was harassed by a male insect in a tavern. Terrified, he could only find a narrow, enclosed corner to hide in.
The fat male insect had grown tired of the beautiful women who flocked to him, and when he saw someone like Carit, he just wanted a change of pace.
The other drunkards nearby cheered and jeered at the scene of this robbery, throwing bottles into the corner, banging on the wall with sticks, and threateningly poking at Carit.
Carit was terrified and pulled out his cheap, old terminal to ask his classmates for help.
Just as he was being dragged from a narrow corner to the ground by a male insect hooking his collar, a group of female soldiers dressed in military academy uniforms rushed in and pulled him up from the ground covered in shards of broken glass.
Most of the students at the First Military Academy of the Insect Star Empire were either rich or noble, while the majority of the male insects drinking at the tavern where they worked in Carit were commoner male insects. So when they saw a group of female military insects in neat school uniforms surrounding them, those male insects who usually only dared to bully commoner female insects and sub-female insects all chickened out.
Carit stood pale-faced behind his classmates, escorted out of the tavern where he worked part-time by a group of tall female soldiers. Rosetta was among them, and before leaving, she draped her coat over Carit's shoulders.
Later, Carit learned that the group of female soldiers who appeared in time were Rosetta's friends. When Rosetta saw Carit's distress call, she was engaged in mech combat with several female soldiers in the training field.
After seeing Carit's distress call, they gathered a few friends to rescue the insect. There were quite a few young female soldiers on the training field at the time, and after hearing about the incident, they all volunteered to help, which allowed Carit to return to school safely.
Moreover, in order to prevent Carit from being punished, the classmates chose to keep the matter a secret, because in their eyes, this little sub-female was simply lovable and harmless.
