Night Fire Lingering
Chapter 69 Coveting My Man
on Monday.
As soon as Wen Yan arrived at the law firm, the project manager called her into his office.
Also present in the office was Ye Sisi, who was also an intern.
The atmosphere in the office was heavy, and Wen Yan had a bad feeling.
"Wen Yan, how did you do with the work that was scheduled to be completed by Friday last week?" The project manager asked with a grim expression.
Wen Yan replied, "I've already finished. I delivered my work to Ye Sisi before the end of Thursday so she could proceed with further tasks."
Wen Yan and Ye Sisi inevitably collaborated on the same project, one after the other.
Ye Sisi looked shocked: "Wen Yan, the market research report you gave me is irrelevant, the chain of evidence is vague, and the viewpoints are not firm. You're completely delaying the project! I had to work overtime for two whole days over the weekend to finish your part and then do my own. Working is not like being in school where you can slack off. You can't just make excuses."
In one sentence, Wen Yan was directly accused of dereliction of duty and shirking responsibility.
Having grown up in the elite circles, Wen Yan was used to the scheming and underhanded tactics. Coupled with the workplace tricks she had experienced in the Mingke project team, she immediately realized that Ye Sisi was trying to frame her!
"Wen Yan, show me your email history," the project manager said.
Before Wen Yan could react, Ye Sisi had already opened her email and checked with the project manager: "Look, there are no records of me communicating with her in the past few days."
"Ye Sisi, you said there was a problem with your email on Thursday, and I gave you the market research report using a USB drive. If I didn't provide any deliverables, how did you obtain the substandard market research report you mentioned?"
"It's precisely because you know your work won't meet the required quality that you're using a USB drive to avoid leaving any evidence," Ye Sisi retorted. "Who knows if you're planning to pass off my hard-earned weekend work as your own!"
Wen Yan found this person utterly disgusting. With a cold face, she opened her bag, took out a USB drive, plugged it into her computer, and showed the research report to the project manager.
The report was clear and concise, and the project manager nodded in satisfaction, then looked puzzled: "Wen Yan, why is the content of your report different from that of Ye Sisi's?"
Wen Yan then took a closer look and found that the so-called market research on Ye Sisi's computer was completely nonsensical and unfamiliar; it was not something she had done at all!
Wen Yan looked at Ye Sisi, who looked at her calmly.
However, upon closer inspection, one can discern a hint of arrogance and a declaration of war within it.
"Yeah! Why is it different?" Ye Sisi's eyes widened in surprise, and after two seconds she seemed to realize something. "Wen Yan, you wouldn't be deliberately giving me a bad report to make me mess up my job, would you?"
Most people's first reaction to this is "the wrong thing was given to them," only those with "ulterior motives" would think it was deliberately given to them that was bad.
Why would I want to ruin your job?
“We’re both interns, and you’re just jealous that I get more attention.”
Wen Yan cursed him as an idiot in her heart and retorted, "How can you prove that what you showed me was the one I sent to you?"
"I can't prove it." Ye Sisi looked utterly wronged. "Aren't you just taking advantage of my inability to prove it to pull these dirty tricks?"
"Ye Sisi, that applies to you too. Why can't it be that you secretly changed the report—"
"Alright!" The project manager interrupted Wen Yan impatiently. "I don't care who's at fault, thankfully the project schedule wasn't delayed this time. If there's a next time, both of you are fired!"
The project manager paused for a moment, then said, "Wen Yan, you can leave. Ye Sisi, you stay."
The project manager spoke with a hint of coldness and impatience to Wen Yan, but was much gentler when speaking to Ye Sisi.
Wen Yan's expression darkened slightly: The project manager trusted Ye Sisi more.
Half an hour later, Ye Sisi came out of the office and paused for a moment as she passed Wen Yan's workstation, glancing at her.
For the entire afternoon, Wen Yan did not receive any new work assignments, as if all her colleagues could not see her.
As it neared the end of the workday, the project manager wanted to find someone to deliver the documents, but no one was available. Ye Sisi suggested that Wen Yan, the only one who was free, go instead.
Ye Sisi handed the documents to Wen Yan, smiling as she whispered, "Wen Yan, aren't you having a hard time with this internship?"
Wen Yan glanced at her and found the person rather strange.
"Ye Sisi, what is your purpose in doing this?"
"It's nothing," Ye Sisi said innocently. "I just think that if you're not suited for this job, it's better to leave sooner rather than later."
In an instant, Wen Yan suddenly understood everything, as if struck by a thunderbolt.
Ye Sisi orchestrated a situation where she was disliked by her superiors and instigated her colleagues to isolate her, all in an attempt to force her to leave the company and resign voluntarily!
Wen Yan found it somewhat amusing.
"Ye Sisi, I'm just an intern. If I really made a mistake at work, the company could fire me right away. But the fact that they haven't fired me means that the higher-ups don't think it's my fault, or at least they can't be sure it's my fault. Ye Sisi, they also suspect you. What you're doing is not worth it!"
When Ye Sisi heard the words "They also suspect you," a look of fear flashed across her face, but she quickly calmed down.
"Stop talking nonsense!" Ye Sisi glanced at the document. "Get the document to the TV station right now."
Wen Yan felt that Ye Sisi's expression was a little strange. Upon closer inspection, she noticed a hint of anticipation in Ye Sisi's eyes.
It wasn't until she arrived at the TV station and saw the contact person's name that Wen Yan realized how much Ye Sisi had been holding back!
"Our Miss Wen is busy right now, please wait outside." Wen Muzhi's assistant said and left, his attitude extremely arrogant.
An hour passed, and during that time Wen Yan wasn't offered a glass of water or a sofa to sit on; it was clearly a show of force.
An hour later, Wen Yan saw Wen Muzhi's assistant come out to pick up the milk tea delivery.
"When is Miss Wen Muzhi available?" Wen Yan stopped her. "If she is not available today, our law firm can come to see her another day."
Wen Yan didn't want to waste time here.
“Isn’t your job as the service provider to serve the client? We, Mu Zhi, absolutely need to see this document today, but we don’t have time right now. We’ve paid so much money, so you’re just supposed to wait!” Wen Mu Zhi’s assistant glanced at her.
“You know who I am, right?” Wen Yan looked into her eyes.
The assistant didn't hide anything, saying disdainfully, "Wen Yan? She's a parasite of the Mu family!"
"Parasites?" Wen Yan crossed her arms leisurely. "Is that what Wen Muzhi told you, or is that your own understanding?"
Before her assistant could speak, Wen Yan said, "Wen Muzhi was brought to the Wen family by my stepmother. He occupies my room, wears my jewelry, and covets my man. Have you ever heard of a cuckoo taking over another's nest?"
