Chapter 2 Rumors: Her child had long since died
Five years have passed, but for Jiang Mian, it feels like only yesterday that she died on the operating table.
Even though I try to adjust my mindset, I still feel a bit uncomfortable.
Lu Bozhou really has no heart at all.
Seeing that Jiang Mian remained silent, the paparazzi assumed she was still on guard and laughed, "Don't worry, my name is Meng Yang, and I'm not on the same line as you."
Hearing this, Jiang Mian became more cautious and did not deny it.
He asked, "Which line are you on?"
Meng Yang replied, "Lu Bozhou's child."
Jiang Mian's eyes suddenly widened.
Meng Yang said helplessly, "You think it's outrageous too, right? Lu Bozhou has protected his son so well, how could he possibly get a picture of him! I think the boss is just making things difficult for me!"
Jiang Mian's throat was a little dry. "Why...why would you let them take pictures of the child?"
"Isn't it because of those rumors that Lu Bozhou's son wasn't born to his wife but was an illegitimate child who took his place?"
Meng Yang curled his lip, "There are even people who suspect that Lu Bozhou's son was actually born to Lin Sisi."
"No, that's not it...!" Jiang Mian clenched her fingers into her palm.
That's her child, that must be the child she risked her life to give birth to!
"This kind of news is quite outrageous. I was the one following the news when Lu Bozhou's wife died during childbirth despite all efforts to save her."
"His wife was in critical condition for seven days, and they said all her blood was replaced. He also spent seven days outside the ICU. He even got into two fights with his wife's relatives because he refused to give up on her. I saw all of this with my own eyes!"
Jiang Mian then learned that during the seven days she lay unconscious and tormented in the ICU, her younger brother Jiang Yu and childhood friend Qin Yanhuai, unable to bear seeing her suffer every day from resuscitation and death, had risked their lives with Lu Bozhou outside the ICU.
Jiang Yu waved his fist, "You didn't cherish her before! Now you're pretending to be so sentimental! My sister is dead! Gone! You made them keep trying to save her, torturing her body! You're just trying to move yourself!"
Qin Yanhuai's eyes were bloodshot, like a trapped beast. "Mianmian was blind to marry you. If she had known this would happen, she should have been with me in the first place..."
But when Lu Bozhou gets stubborn, it's a dead end that's impossible to reason with.
Even the sound had no fluctuations or warmth.
"I am Jiang Mian's husband, and I am her primary guardian. I will not allow her to die!"
Jiang Mian felt a surge of mockery.
When he was secretly dating Xu Yawei, and when she was enduring the pain of pregnancy alone, how could he not remember that he was her husband?
"Some people say his son died along with his wife a long time ago..."
As Meng Yang spoke, he noticed that Jiang Mian's complexion was getting worse and worse. "Hey, are you alright? You look terrible."
It took Jiang Mian a while to react. She waved her hand and said, "It's okay, I'm fine."
"Don't push yourself too hard. I can tell you haven't eaten or drunk anything all day. Even someone made of iron couldn't take it. Besides, they're not even in Los Angeles."
Meng Yang took out his phone. "Give me your number. If it really happens, I'll let you know. Anyway, we're not on the same page, so it won't cause any problems."
Jiang Mian forced herself to stop crying and nodded in agreement.
She was also afraid that if she continued like this, she wouldn't be able to hold on and would collapse.
After all, the original owner of this body died suddenly from overwork, and she hadn't even seen her child yet; she couldn't just die again like that.
After leaving her number, Jiang Mian rode her electric scooter away from Lanshan Mansion.
Lanshan Mansion is a luxury residential community in Luocheng, with a good environment but a remote location.
There's only one bus route, and the intervals are long, with one bus coming only every half hour.
Actually, hardly anyone takes the bus. Everyone who lives here is driven around, and they probably don't even know where the bus stop is.
But Jiang Mian knew.
She not only knew about it, but she had also sat in it.
When she was a humble Mrs. Lu, she didn't have the luxury of being picked up and dropped off by a car, and she even had to wait for the bus when transportation was inconvenient.
It was only after I got my driver's license that things became much more convenient.
At that time, Lu Bozhou was already quite wealthy, but he never picked her up or dropped her off.
She had made requests before, but Lu Bozhou refused them all, citing his busy schedule.
But later, he was willing to personally drive hundreds of kilometers from the airport on a rainy night to pick up Xu Yawei and bring her back to the city center, where he settled her in the best hotel.
The stand-in has no right to be sad, especially since she's already dead.
Jiang Mian rode her electric bike past the bus stop with a blank expression.
He quickly squeezed the brakes and stopped the car.
She noticed a small figure crouching in the shadows in front of the bus stop, easily missed if you didn't look closely.
The figure was very small, and the clothes on it looked somewhat dirty and messy.
"Hey kid! Kid!"
Jiang Mian called out twice, then scrambled her feet on the ground to back the electric scooter to the bus stop.
The small figure raised its head, a glint of light flashing in its eyes.
Jiang Mian met a pair of bright, round, dark eyes, like a startled fawn.
It was a little boy with very fair skin and a small stature; he looked to be only three or four years old.
Her heart clenched.
Perhaps because she hadn't been able to see her own child, Jiang Mian felt a surge of affection upon seeing the little boy.
"Little friend, what are you doing here all by yourself? Where are your parents?" Jiang Mian asked.
The little boy didn't speak, he just stared at her.
Jiang Mian wasn't in a hurry. "Auntie will take you to the police station, okay? The police officers will help you find your parents and take you home."
The little boy didn't move; he just stood there watching her.
Jiang Mian took out her phone. "Don't be afraid, Auntie will call the police right now and have the officers come to pick you up."
Just as Jiang Mian was about to dial, the child finally stood up.
I carefully walked towards her and stood in front of her.
"Are you willing to let me take you there?" Jiang Mian asked.
The little boy stared at her intently and nodded seriously.
Jiang Mian put her helmet on his little head and rode her electric bike to the police station with him.
He was probably a little shy, and he held tightly to Jiang Mian's clothes, not letting go even when they arrived at the police station.
The police officers were very helpful. One kind-looking old policeman spent a long time coaxing and persuading him.
No response.
He could only lean close to Jiang Mian and whisper, "Hey, did he say anything?"
Jiang Mian shook her head, suddenly realizing that this child might not be... mute.
"Is this your parents' phone number?" A young police officer looked at the phone screen, at the number the child had just dialed.
The little boy didn't say anything, but just nodded slightly.
But when I called, the phone was switched off.
"Why is the phone off? The child is missing and they still have it off! Parents these days are really carefree!"
The kind-faced old policeman said to Jiang Mian, "Thank you for bringing the child here. After that, things will be easy to handle. Just leave it to us."
"Then I'll leave now, thank you for your help." Jiang Mian got up to leave.
Noticing her action, the previously silent little boy suddenly became anxious.
He quickly caught up and grabbed Jiang Mian's clothes tightly.
“You…” Jiang Mian originally wanted to persuade him, to tell him that it was safe here and that his parents would come to pick him up soon.
But before she could speak, she saw that the child had pulled up a bit of his sleeve because he was reaching out so eagerly.
His small arms were exposed, covered in large abrasions.
For some reason, Jiang Mian felt a sharp pain in her heart.
She frantically rummaged through her bag, pulled out her ID card, and handed it to the old policeman.
“It’s getting late, and the child might be hungry, plus he has a scraped hand. I live in Unit 2, Building 3, Yalai Xiaoyuan, room 907. Would it be alright if I took him back to wait?”
