Grandma Xia was restless all day. She wondered how the child's interview went. If it didn't work out, she had just gotten some new information from her old colleague: she was going to sell her job for money.
If she really didn't get the job, she did consider buying it, but she was a little short on money, and besides, even if Xiang Hong got the job, she still had her second son.
Work waits for no one; she had just arranged with someone to hold onto the goods until tomorrow, so they wouldn't sell them yet. After so many years of friendship, the person agreed.
Jobs are now in high demand but short supply. Once someone announces they're selling a job, there are plenty of people willing to buy it, even if it means borrowing money.
Buying a job is a great deal!
Although Grandma Xia knew that factories would close down one by one and that the jobs she had bought with a lot of money would disappear, her family's situation was different.
Xiang Hong, who had taken leave from her rural assignment, now had to stay in the city. She only had two options: either get a job so she could legitimately transfer her grain rations, or get married.
But marriage is a huge deal. If she meets a bad man, life will be miserable. Although she asked around, she couldn't find one so quickly. They still had to inquire from many sources and see if Xiang Hong liked him.
Getting married is difficult to achieve in the short term, so I can only rely on working.
Although she told Xiang Hong that even if she didn't get the job, she would still have her job as a backup, given the situation these past few years, the more workers in the family, the better.
And then there's the second son. He got laid off from his temporary job and now he's out early and back late every day. I don't know what he's doing. His wife died, and he doesn't have a proper job. Lingling will be laughed at when she goes out in the future.
Grandma Xia was initially too lazy to care about him; if he was going to be a bachelor, so be it. But her granddaughter was a good girl, and she couldn't let him hold her back.
If she could raise the money and Xiang Hong could find a job, she planned to give him the job, but Old Lady Xia would not pay for it.
When it was time to leave work, Grandma Xia came out in her work clothes. She ran into Old Chen when she was almost home. She told him about her work, and Old Chen's eyes lit up.
"We must buy it!" Old Chen leaned closer and whispered, not wanting anyone else to know this earth-shattering news.
The two were discussing money when they started arguing again.
"You were willing to give money to Xiang Hong to buy her a job, and you were willing to give up your own job to Xiang Hong, so why are you unhappy about it when it comes to Xiang Nan?"
Old Chen was furious. "He's your son too. We can pay for the job ourselves. Why does he have to pay? If he can't afford it, why do you make him write an IOU? Are you even his own mother?"
"I think you're just biased towards girls and dislike boys."
Grandma Xia pushed the old man aside. "If I really favored girls over boys, Xiang Hong wouldn't have gone to the countryside. Didn't I have to beg and plead to get the second son's temporary job? How could he find a job on his own?"
"If I hadn't gotten this job, my second son would have been sent to the countryside long ago. Wouldn't I be his mother?"
Old Chen retorted, "Even if he didn't have a job, he wouldn't go to the countryside. He married into the Dong family right after graduating from high school."
Grandma Xia: "If he didn't have a job, would the Dong family, with their snobbishness, have married their daughter to him? Their dowry was even higher than others. Did I say anything? If I hadn't contributed money back then, do you think your son would have been able to get a wife?"
Old Chen protested, "That's my money."
Old Mrs. Xia slapped her again, "What do you mean? Your money isn't my money, it's not our money, it's just your money? You want to break up with me?"
Old Chen covered his face, his anger vanishing instantly. This old hag was hitting people at the drop of a hat; he was starting to lose his will to live.
“That’s not what I meant,” he replied curtly.
