Jiang Wenhua glanced at him sideways as he walked in. Chen Xiangbei put his hand to his mouth, signaling Jiang Wenhua to shut up and not to tell anyone.
Jiang Wenhua raised an eyebrow and suddenly shouted, "Old Xia, your third son is here to see you."
Everyone in the courtyard looked towards Jiang Wenhua. Chen Xiangbei walked out with a flushed face, but he lowered his head and dared not meet Xia Laotai's eyes. "Mom."
"Third son, why aren't you coming in?" Old Mrs. Xia asked, sitting at the doorway.
Seeing Chen Xiangbei dawdling, Jiang Wenhua grew impatient, grabbed his arm, and pulled him inside. "There's no monster here, what are you doing standing at the door?"
Chen Xiangbei stood in front of Grandma Xia with a pout. Grandma Yin was also sitting there. She looked up and saw that the boy's eyes were brimming with tears, as if he had suffered some great injustice. "Xiangbei, did your dad do something to you?"
Upon hearing this, Chen Xiangbei cried even louder.
Xia Yu'e ran out and saw Chen Xiangbei crying so loudly. She quickly wiped away his tears and asked, "What's wrong? What happened? Why are you so upset?"
Chen Xiangbei didn't know what to say. After his aunt finished speaking, he jumped onto the windowsill and sat there, gazing into the distance without making a sound.
The others exchanged glances, and Old Lady Yin whispered, "It must be that irresponsible old Chen's father who broke his own son's heart like this. He doesn't even act like a father. If you ask me, a man like him should be sent to live in the pigsty when he gets old, so he can starve and freeze to death."
Xia Yu'e was unaware of what had happened. She hadn't come out since earlier, staying in her bedroom alone, doing nothing. She only ran out when she heard the noise. "What happened? What's going on?"
Grandma Yin had no choice but to recount what she had seen in the courtyard. As soon as she finished, Jiang Wenhua picked up and briefly described the conversation between Old Chen and the others that they had just met on the road.
Upon hearing that Old Chen was a man who would abandon his own son for a woman, Xia Yu'e cursed even more harshly than Old Lady Yin, "If he dies, no one will be there to see him off. A man like that deserves to have no son. Shameless old beast, he's lived to this age and his brain hasn't grown at all. He deserves to be eaten alive, skin and bones, leaving not a single bit behind."
He can't even compare to other women. He keeps all the money to himself, not giving a single penny to his son, but instead giving it all to outsiders. How has someone like him survived this long? Why hasn't some lightning struck him dead? What widow with three sons is simple-minded enough to simply like this old man? She's only after his money and his job. How did someone with that kind of brain become a technician? Xiang Bei is such a good kid, just like my Yue'e when she was little. She's so kind, yet she's so heartbroken. Poor thing.
"What do you mean 'exactly the same'?" Old Mrs. Xia looked at her in confusion upon hearing this inexplicable remark. She herself had never stolen chickens or dogs when she was a child, and she was not that naive.
After the three old ladies finished scolding him, Chen Xiangbei felt much better.
In this situation, Chen Xiangbei didn't want to hear any nonsense or grand principles. He wanted to hear that others were on his side. He was already so wronged, and he still wanted to hear grand principles? He was determined to fight with the person who only knew how to talk big.
He jumped down from the windowsill, his voice still a little hoarse, "Mom, Auntie, Aunt Yin, Aunt Zheng, I'm leaving now."
Grandma Xia stood up from the chair and patted his dusty pants. "Where are you going? Where are you going? You can sleep here tonight, so you won't get into a fight with your dad when you get back."
Chen Xiangbei sniffed. "No, I need to find out more information, otherwise it will be too late."
He walked out dejectedly, thinking of his father chasing after the widow's back, and said fiercely yet pitifully, "I don't know if my dad will go home tonight. If he gets carried away and stays at the widow's house instead, I'll report them for having an affair and send them all to a labor camp."
Grandma Xia could detect a hint of expectation in his tone; it seemed this little brat really hated his father.
Old Chen, he's a real scoundrel!
Qiao Shan listened to the whole thing and was also very angry. Seeing that Chen Xiangbei, who was usually talkative and outspoken, was in such a low mood, he felt bad for him. "Brother Xiangbei, why don't I go with you?"
Chen Xiangbei shook his head. "No need."
Qiao Shan thought about it and decided to follow. If anything happened, he could carry the person and run away; he was very fast.
In the middle of the night, Jiang Wenhua's door was banged on loudly, almost scaring Jiang's mother to death.
"Wenhua, what's going on outside? Who has an emergency in the middle of the night? Why aren't they making a sound?"
Jiang Wenhua walked out and opened the door, cursing. "Which bastard dares to play tricks on people like this in the middle of the night? I'll punch him in a bit. This is too much of a disturbance."
As soon as he opened the door, someone was shoved into his arms—a pale, unconscious woman.
Jiang Wenhua was so frightened that she threw the man to the ground, determined to protect her innocence. "Chen Xiangbei, are you trying to die? Who is this? Didn't you go to find out about your dad's girlfriend? Who is this woman? You didn't kill her and try to frame me, did you?"
Jiang Wenhua started cursing, terrified in the middle of the night. Now, out of nowhere, a woman had been thrown at him, lying motionless on the ground—it was terrifying. If Chen Xiangbei really wanted to kill him, he would make sure he got what he deserved.
Qiao Shan was extremely anxious. He carried the woman all the way here, but she refused to go to the hospital and insisted on coming to find Jiang Wenhua. They were at their wits' end.
If it weren't for her pitiful state and the fact that she was related to Jiang Wenhua, Chen Xiangbei wouldn't have paid her any attention. He was busy and had no idea that he would run into this person before he had even finished his own business.
The woman on the ground had her face obscured by her disheveled hair, so Jiang Wenhua couldn't see her face. She was very thin, dressed in tattered clothes, and smelled of blood. She looked like a dead person no matter how you looked at her.
Although he had just felt that she was still warm, what if she had just died recently?
"Chen Xiangbei, you didn't kill someone and want me to clean up the mess for you, did you? Let me tell you, I'm a law-abiding citizen, I would never do such a thing for you." Jiang Wenhua was truly exasperated with him. No matter how angry he was, he couldn't have killed someone, wouldn't that have ruined his life?
Chen Xiangbei steadied his breathing, "What nonsense are you spouting, you bastard? I brought her all the way here for you, and this is how you treat me? I'm busy with my own life. I wouldn't have helped her if she wasn't desperate."
Jiang Wenhua: "Why don't you, being so kind, solve it yourself? What do you mean by dumping people on me?"
"She said she's your sister," Chen Xiangbei shouted, finally getting to the point.
