Braving the biting cold wind, people in the courtyard and nearby lit kerosene lamps, put on their clothes, and sleepily opened their doors to come out. When they saw it was them, they sighed.

"Yue'e, what are you two arguing about again? It's not even dawn yet. Can't you wait until it's light to talk about it? You've scared my little grandson so much that he's crying."

"Old Chen has started beating his wife too? He's really ruthless."

"Aunt Xia is even more ruthless; she truly hates people."

"Don't just stand there watching the show, quickly separate those two!"

People hurriedly pulled the two apart, but they were fighting fiercely and were still kicking each other even when being pulled away.

Old Mrs. Xia: "I want a divorce. I must divorce you today."

Old Chen: "Listen to what she's saying. Who gets divorced so easily? I still don't know what I did wrong. What did I do wrong that she insists on divorcing me?"

"Yes, we've been neighbors for so many years. Old Chen has some minor flaws, but no major problems. How did things escalate to the point of wanting a divorce?"

"Everyone has flaws. We're not gods, of course we all have problems. We've lived together for so many years, we've tolerated what we could, and we wouldn't have waited until now to finally get a divorce if we couldn't tolerate what we couldn't tolerate."

"Old Ma has beaten his wife his whole life, and she's never divorced him. Didn't we hear yesterday that she's going to the farm with him for reform through labor? Can Old Chen be any worse than Old Ma?"

"Don't even mention Old Chen. My husband doesn't earn as much as Old Chen. He acts like a king as soon as he gets home and I have to serve him. He won't even pick up a soy sauce bottle if it falls over. If we argue, he'll hit me. He has a terrible temper and a short temper. I haven't even thought about getting a divorce."

"You already have three children and two grandchildren, what are you making a fuss about every day? If you really couldn't make it work, how did you manage when you were young? Now that you're this old, you can't stand it anymore?"

"I don't know what you women are thinking. We have food, drink, clothes, and a place to live. What more could we ask for? It's you people who are making a fuss at home every day. Don't you know what it means for a family to prosper?"

"How can you talk like that? Maybe some people look decent on the surface but do a lot of disgusting things behind the scenes, just like you. Do you really think we've forgotten how badly you treated your wife before?"

"What do you mean 'as long as we have food and clothing, that's enough'? We're not working, are we? After work, we still have to take care of the whole family. You think you can be the masters and we're just slaves? You men are tired, but we women aren't? If you all knew how to share the housework, who would cause trouble for no reason?"

"Exactly, it's like no one is making money. My husband and I earn about the same amount, but he spends most of his money on eating and drinking with other people. I'm the one who supports the family the most, doing housework and raising the children. And yet, people say he's the one who's capable?"

"Isn't that amazing? He can trick you into working for free, having someone wait on you, having someone give birth to and raise your children, and having someone help take care of your parents. The most important thing is that you use your own money to take care of their whole family. Who can we talk to about this?"

"There's one more thing I haven't mentioned. In the end, even after you've raised the child, some ungrateful kids will still think it's all thanks to their father."

The neighbors who were originally trying to persuade Old Chen and Old Lady Xia not to fight or get a divorce suddenly split into two groups, men and women, and started arguing. Some of the couples even started fighting and shouting for a divorce!

Grandma Xia: ...She knew their compound wouldn't be so peaceful.

She pricked up her ears to listen to their insults, then was suddenly pulled over by an old neighbor who shouted, "Sister Xia, get a divorce! You have to divorce Old Chen! If someone as tolerant as you can't stand this, Old Chen must have done something heinous. Get a divorce! I support you!"

After saying that, she wiped away the tears that had streamed down her face without her noticing. "I want a divorce too! I'll get a divorce with you! Let's go to the Civil Affairs Bureau right now to get the household registration book. We have to get a divorce today! Whoever doesn't is a dog!"

The old neighbor's husband pulled her along, and she pulled on Old Lady Xia. As Old Lady Xia was being dragged along, she grabbed Old Chen. The four of them stumbled along in the courtyard, with everyone else still arguing.

Grandma Yin had just calmed Hu Yingying down when she rushed out and was stunned by what she saw.

What's going on? I just heard Sister Yue'e arguing, and then suddenly it got really noisy. Now several couples are even fighting. What happened?

Grandma Yin ran to Grandma Xia's side, "Sister Yue'e, are you going to get a divorce? And why are you all in such a sorry state?"

As dawn broke, a large crowd gathered at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau. Some had followed the couple after the main couple left, some were also angry and wanted a divorce, and some had even brought their household registration documents but the man changed his mind and pleaded with them at the entrance.

The staff at the Civil Affairs Bureau were startled when they arrived at work today. They almost thought someone in their unit had offended someone and was being blocked like this. When they heard that it was an elderly couple who wanted to get a divorce, they were even more bewildered.

Old Chen didn't want a divorce, and Old Mrs. Xia's agreement alone wasn't enough; the staff were also mediating. These days, many people get married, but very few get divorced. She'd been working there for years and had never seen a single couple divorce.

“Auntie, you see, Uncle doesn’t want a divorce, so we can’t make it happen. Although I don’t know what happened, Uncle’s attitude shows that he will change whatever mistakes he made in the future. Why don’t you give him another chance?”

Old Chen looked pitiful and said, "Yes, I will definitely change. I will change no matter what you say."

Grandma Xia slapped her again. "What have you changed? What have you changed in all these years? Besides pushing me out and playing the good guy behind my back, have you ever done anything good? Have you ever thought about me even once?"

Old Chen: "How could I not have thought about you? Are you doing badly now? Don't I give you all my salary? Didn't I help you when you had a conflict with someone?"

Grandma Xia: "I have a job and a salary. I can live better on my own. And, no matter how many times I have to say it, all those conflicts are caused by you and your children. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have any conflicts with anyone. As for people like you, if I continue to live with you, I'll kill you all sooner or later."

The two got into a huge argument in the Civil Affairs Bureau. In the end, Old Chen got so angry that he couldn't argue with her and reluctantly agreed to the divorce.

Taking advantage of this moment, Grandma Xia quickly had the staff complete the process, stamped the documents, and obtained the divorce certificate. She then breathed a sigh of relief and swaggered out.

Seeing how supportive her old friends were this time, Grandma Yin stopped herself from rushing over to help and just stood by and watched as her sister Yue'e was given a new lease on life.
