The verdict for the Hu family came down soon after. Hu's mother was released by Hu's father, and only Hu's father was imprisoned.

Father Hu believed that with his eldest son dead and his younger son resenting them, Jinju, being a woman, couldn't handle things alone, and that the Hu family would truly be without an heir.

Although he didn't have any good land to inherit, he couldn't let his family line end with him; Hu Bin was his only hope.

We can't put our hopes on the second child. He's stubborn and it seems unlikely he'll have another child. Even if he does, he probably won't let the child take his surname; instead, he'll choose the woman's surname.

So, Jinju couldn't handle the situation, but with Hu's mother and herself, they should be able to raise Hu Bin properly. At the very least, the younger son should occasionally help his nephew out of respect for his mother.

He and his eldest brother did this, so he shouldn't blame his nephew and his mother.

After this analysis, it's clear that Hu's mother has to leave.

Mr. Hu shifted the blame onto his deceased eldest son, claiming he was merely an accomplice. Mr. Hu's mother only confessed to the crime under his coercion.

So, on a sunny day, Hu's father went to the labor reform farm.

Hu's mother secretly glared at Hu Yingying with hatred. If it weren't for her, her eldest son wouldn't have died, and her husband wouldn't have been sent to a labor camp. It was all her fault.

These past few days, Hu's mother and Jinju have been relentlessly pestering Hu Jie. After repairing the door, Hu Jie changed the lock and refused to let them in.

A few days ago, Hu's mother still had the energy to curse loudly, but later she was too weak from hunger to do so, and she slept at Hu Jie's doorstep, as if she would starve to death at his door if Hu Jie didn't let her in.

But Hu Jie wouldn't even glance at her. After Hu Bin snatched her food a few times, none of the children in the compound came out anymore.

"Grandma, I'm hungry, I'm so hungry," Hu Bin said listlessly.

Hu's mother originally wanted to endure it; she was just an old woman, and if she died, so be it, and it would let everyone see what kind of person Hu Jie was. But seeing her eldest grandson in such a miserable state, she couldn't bear it.

Old Ma's wife had previously told them not to die in the yard, saying it was bad luck, and even suggested that they cause trouble at Hu Jie's factory.

These organizations all care about their reputation, and they can also get a lot of benefits from it. If they cry and plead pitifully, Hu Jie will not only be criticized, but they will also be given a good meal.

Hu's mother believed her and asked around about Hu Jie's factory, but the security guard at the gate wouldn't let her in.

Not only did everyone in the compound know about Hu Jie's family situation, but everyone in the factory also knew about it.

When the two women said they were Hu Jie's family members and recounted how ruthless Hu Jie had been to them, the security guard rolled his eyes.

After being driven away, they came back to pressure Hu Jie.

Hu Yingying hasn't left the house recently and is being well taken care of at home. It was only today that Hu Jie had to go to the factory, so he left her with Grandma Yin.

Grandma Yin has been feeling very upset lately. She was hospitalized until Hu Yingying got news of her, and she has been taking medication ever since.

Hearing Hu Jie hand the person back to her, still with such trust, she felt like crying. She swore repeatedly that she would never lose the person again.

Hu Jie told her not to be too nervous. The tragedy happened last time because of his family. Grandma Yin didn't do it on purpose. This is how everyone in the compound raises children, and nothing has ever happened before.

If it weren't for him, the people in the compound wouldn't be so tense right now. First, they're afraid their children will be stolen and sold by these vicious people again, and second, they're afraid they'll wake up one morning to find these people dead at Hu Jie's doorstep.

When Hu's mother saw Hu Jie come out, she immediately grabbed his clothes and said, "Second son, buy us train tickets. We're leaving right now and we'll never come back again."

Hu Jie broke free and ignored him completely. Now that he'd given them money, they'd go to the countryside to rest and then come back to the city to pester him endlessly. If he really wanted to die, he might as well die this summer.

"Second!"

As he walked further and further away, Hu's mother felt like that lonely widow at the end of the village, abandoned forever.

"How are we going to get back? My grandson can't starve to death," Mrs. Hu murmured.

Jinju, who was starving, said, "Mom, our letters of introduction are about to expire, the day after tomorrow. We might as well go to the train station now and let them arrest us. Then they can send us back."

These past few days she's encountered something disgusting. A man, reeking of alcohol, asked her if she needed money. Without thinking, she said yes, she really needed money. The man then put his filthy hand on her shoulder and tried to kiss her with his alcohol-smelling breath, scaring her so much she screamed "pervert!"

There weren't many people in this place to begin with, but the man was still scared away, running very fast while cursing under his breath.

When Jinju returned to Hu Jie's door, she regretted it a little. She should have threatened him to get some money; otherwise, she wouldn't be so hungry.

She feels like she's dying, and sometimes she sees stars. If that old hag wants to live a good life with her grandson, let them live it; she didn't need to come here.

Now, all three of them are starving together.

"Grandma, please go beg for food for me, I'm dying." Hu Bin lay on the ground, not wanting to move, encouraging his beloved grandma to go beg for food.

“If you go begging, people will definitely give you some food because they feel sorry for you.” Hu Bin thought his idea was really good.

Mother Hu: "My dear grandson is so smart. He'll definitely be more capable than your uncle in the future and become a high-ranking official."

"No wonder your grandfather said you are the hope of our Hu family. I never thought of such a good idea. I'll go right now and get some food for my dear grandson. It would be even better if someone could give me some money."

"Look at you, your face has become so thin lately that you're practically skin and bones. You can barely stand up straight anymore, can you? Grandma and your mom are going together, so we need to make sure you're well-fed."

Jinju was stunned. In the past few days, Hu Bin had taken all the food and ended up in his own mouth, while she and her mother-in-law hadn't eaten anything except for drinking water from other people's water tanks outside the door.

Even if Hu Bin is very hungry, he wouldn't be so thin that his face becomes shriveled; he still has some meat on him.

Furthermore, she even made her mother-in-law beg for food. How can she be called a good grandson?

She suddenly felt that she had raised this son to be a waste. If he didn't amount to anything in the future, would he push her out to beg for food when she got old? Would he blame her for not being able to find a wife?

What an incredibly filial son!

Jinju made up her mind and one night stole all the money that Hu's mother had begged for, and ran back to the countryside.

Her husband is dead, and she can't let this ungrateful son hold her back; she wants to remarry. Her deadbeat husband is dead; she could have remarried anyway.

Even marrying a poor, old bachelor would be better than staying in a house without a man.

She's still young; she can have another child.
